¹But the children of Israel committed unfaithfulness in that which had been brought under the curse: Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

¹しかし、イスラエルの人々は奉納物について罪を犯した。すなわちユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子ザブデの子であるカルミの子アカンが奉納物を取ったのである。それで主はイスラエルの人々にむかって怒りを発せられた。

²And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the country. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

²ヨシュアはエリコから人々をつかわし、ベテルの東、ベテアベンの近くにあるアイに行かせようとして、その人々に言った、「上って行って、かの地を探ってきなさい」。人々は上って行って、アイを探ったが、

³And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, Let not all the people go up; let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither, for they are few.

³ヨシュアのもとに帰ってきて言った、「民をことごとく行かせるには及びません。ただ二、三千人を上らせて、アイを撃たせなさい。彼らは少ないのですから、民をことごとくあそこへやってほねおりをさせるには及びません」。

⁴And there went up thither of the people about three thousand men, but they fled before the men of Ai.

⁴そこで民のうち、おおよそ三千人がそこに上ったが、ついにアイの人々の前から逃げ出した。

⁵And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty-six men; and they pursued them from before the gate to Shebarim, and smote them on the descent. Then the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

⁵アイの人々は彼らのうち、おおよそ三十六人を殺し、更に彼らを門の前からシバリムまで追って、下り坂で彼らを殺したので、民の心は消えて水のようになった。

⁶And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and threw dust upon their heads.

⁶そのためヨシュアは衣服を裂き、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、主の箱の前で、夕方まで地にひれ伏し、ちりをかぶった。

⁷And Joshua said, Alas, Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh that we had been content and had remained beyond the Jordan!

⁷ヨシュアは言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、あなたはなにゆえ、この民にヨルダンを渡らせ、われわれをアモリびとの手に渡して滅ぼさせられるのですか。われわれはヨルダンの向こうに、安んじてとどまればよかったのです。

⁸Ah Lord! what shall I say after Israel have turned their backs before their enemies?

⁸ああ、主よ。イスラエルがすでに敵に背をむけた今となって、わたしはまた何を言い得ましょう。

⁹When the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear [of it], they will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. And what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

⁹カナンびと、およびこの地に住むすべてのものは、これを聞いて、われわれを攻めかこみ、われわれの名を地から断ち去ってしまうでしょう。それであなたは、あなたの大いなる名のために、何をしようとされるのですか」。

¹⁰And Jehovah said to Joshua, Rise up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

¹⁰主はヨシュアに言われた、「立ちなさい。あなたはどうして、そのようにひれ伏しているのか。

¹¹Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them, and they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it among their stuff.

¹¹イスラエルは罪を犯し、わたしが彼らに命じておいた契約を破った。彼らは奉納物を取り、盗み、かつ偽って、それを自分の所有物のうちに入れた。

¹²And the children of Israel shall not be able to stand before their enemies: they shall turn their backs before their enemies, for they have made themselves accursed. I will no more be with you, except ye destroy the accursed thing from your midst.

¹²それでイスラエルの人々は敵に当ることができず、敵に背をむけた。彼らも滅ぼされるべきものとなったからである。あなたがたが、その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから滅ぼし去るのでなければ、わたしはもはやあなたがたとは共にいないであろう。

¹³Rise up, hallow the people, and say, Hallow yourselves for to-morrow; for thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, Israel: thou shalt not be able to stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from your midst.

¹³立って、民を清めて言いなさい、『あなたがたは身を清めて、あすのために備えなさい。イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、「イスラエルよ、あなたがたのうちに、滅ぼされるべきものがある。その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから除き去るまでは、敵に当ることはできないであろう」。

¹⁴And ye shall be brought near in the morning according to your tribes; and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come forward by families, and the family which Jehovah taketh shall come forward by households; and the household which Jehovah taketh shall come forward man by man.

¹⁴それゆえ、あすの朝、あなたがたは部族ごとに進み出なければならない。そして主がくじを当てられる部族は、氏族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる氏族は、家族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる家族は、男ひとりびとり進み出なければならない。

¹⁵And it shall be, that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he hath, because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought wickedness in Israel.

¹⁵そしてその滅ぼされるべきものを持っていて、くじを当てられた者は、その持ち物全部と共に、火で焼かれなければならない。主の契約を破りイスラエルのうちに愚かなことを行ったからである』」。

¹⁶And Joshua rose early in the morning, and caused Israel to come forward by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.

¹⁶こうしてヨシュアは朝早く起き、イスラエルを部族ごとに進み出させたところ、ユダの部族がくじに当り、

¹⁷And he caused the families of Judah to come forward, and he took the family of the Zarhites. And he caused the family of the Zarhites to come forward man by man, and Zabdi was taken.

¹⁷ユダのもろもろの氏族を進み出させたところ、ゼラびとの氏族が、くじに当った。ゼラびとの氏族を家族ごとに進み出させたところ、ザブデの家族が、くじに当った。

¹⁸And he caused his household to come forward man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

¹⁸ザブデの家族を男ひとりびとり進み出させたところ、アカンがくじに当った。アカンはユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子、ザブデの子なるカルミの子である。

¹⁹And Joshua said to Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah the God of Israel, and make confession to him: tell me now what thou hast done, keep it not back from me.

¹⁹その時ヨシュアはアカンに言った、「わが子よ、イスラエルの神、主に栄光を帰し、また主をさんびし、あなたのしたことを今わたしに告げなさい。わたしに隠してはならない」。

²⁰And Achan answered Joshua and said, Indeed I have sinned against Jehovah the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.

²⁰アカンはヨシュアに答えた、「ほんとうにわたしはイスラエルの神、主に対して罪を犯しました。わたしがしたのはこうです。

²¹I saw among the spoils a beautiful mantle of Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a golden bar of fifty shekels weight, and I coveted them and took them; and behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

²¹わたしはぶんどり物のうちに、シナルの美しい外套一枚と銀二百シケルと、目方五十シケルの金の延べ棒一本のあるのを見て、ほしくなり、それを取りました。わたしの天幕の中に、地に隠してあります。銀はその下にあります」。

²²And Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

²²そこでヨシュアは使者たちをつかわした。使者たちが天幕に走っていって見ると、それは彼の天幕に隠してあって、銀もその下にあった。

²³And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before Jehovah.

²³彼らはそれを天幕の中から取り出して、ヨシュアとイスラエルのすべての人々の所に携えてきたので、それを主の前に置いた。

²⁴Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the bar of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up into the valley of Achor.

²⁴ヨシュアはすべてのイスラエルびとと共に、ゼラの子アカンを捕え、かの銀と外套と金の延べ棒、および彼のむすこ、娘、牛、ろば、羊、天幕など、彼の持ち物をことごとく取って、アコルの谷へ引いていった。

²⁵And Joshua said, How hast thou troubled us! Jehovah will trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

²⁵そしてヨシュアは言った、「なぜあなたはわれわれを悩ましたのか。主は、きょう、あなたを悩まされるであろう」。やがてすべてのイスラエルびとは石で彼を撃ち殺し、また彼の家族をも石で撃ち殺し、火をもって焼いた。そしてアカンの上に石塚を大きく積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。そして主は激しい怒りをやめられたが、このことによって、その所の名は今日までアコルの谷と呼ばれている。

²⁶And they raised over him a great heap of stones, [which is there] to this day. And Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called, The Valley of Achor, to this day.

²⁶そしてアカンの上に石塚を大きく積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。そして主は激しい怒りをやめられたが、このことによって、その所の名は今日までアコルの谷と呼ばれている。
