1A soft answer turneth away fury; but a grievous word stirreth up anger.
1柔かい答は憤りをとどめ、激しい言葉は怒りをひきおこす。
2The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of the foolish poureth out folly.
2知恵ある者の舌は知識をわかち与え、愚かな者の口は愚かを吐き出す。
3The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
3主の目はどこにでもあって、悪人と善人とを見張っている。
4Gentleness of tongue is a tree of life; but crookedness therein is a breaking of the spirit.
4優しい舌は命の木である、乱暴な言葉は魂を傷つける。
5A fool despiseth his father's instruction; but he that regardeth reproof becometh prudent.
5愚かな者は父の教訓を軽んじる、戒めを守る者は賢い者である。
6In the house of a righteous [man] is much treasure; but in the revenue of a wicked [man] is disturbance.
6正しい者の家には多くの宝がある、悪しき者の所得には煩いがある。
7The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, but not so the heart of the foolish.
7知恵ある者のくちびるは知識をひろめる、愚かな者の心はそうでない。
8The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
8悪しき者の供え物は主に憎まれ、正しい者の祈は彼に喜ばれる。
9The way of a wicked [man] is an abomination to Jehovah; but him that pursueth righteousness he loveth.
9悪しき者の道は主に憎まれ、正義を求める者は彼に愛せられる。
10Grievous correction is for him that forsaketh the path; he that hateth reproof shall die.
10道を捨てる者には、きびしい懲しめがあり、戒めを憎む者は死に至る。
11Sheol and destruction are before Jehovah; how much more then the hearts of the children of men!
11陰府と滅びとは主の目の前にあり、人の心はなおさらである。
12A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him; he will not go unto the wise.
12あざける者は戒められることを好まない、また知恵ある者に近づかない。
13A joyful heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.
13心に楽しみがあれば顔色も喜ばしい、心に憂いがあれば気はふさぐ。
14The heart of an intelligent [man] seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish feedeth on folly.
14さとき者の心は知識をたずね、愚かな者の口は愚かさを食物とする。
15All the days of the afflicted are evil; but a cheerful heart is a continual feast.
15悩んでいる者の日々はことごとくつらく、心の楽しい人は常に宴会をもつ。
16Better is little with the fear of Jehovah than great store and disquietude therewith.
16少しの物を所有して主を恐れるのは、多くの宝をもって苦労するのにまさる。
17Better is a meal of herbs where love is, than a fatted ox and hatred therewith.
17野菜を食べて互に愛するのは、肥えた牛を食べて互に憎むのにまさる。
18A furious man stirreth up contention; but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
18憤りやすい者は争いをおこし、怒りをおそくする者は争いをとどめる。
19The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns; but the path of the upright is made plain.
19なまけ者の道には、いばらがはえしげり、正しい者の道は平らかである。
20A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
20知恵ある子は父を喜ばせる、愚かな人はその母を軽んじる。
21Folly is joy to him that is void of sense; but a man of understanding regulateth his walk.
21無知な者は愚かなことを喜び、さとき者はまっすぐに歩む。
22Without counsel purposes are disappointed; but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
22相はかることがなければ、計画は破れる、はかる者が多ければ、それは必ず成る。
23A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth; and a word in its season, how good is it!
23人は口から出る好ましい答によって喜びを得る、時にかなった言葉は、いかにも良いものだ。
24The path of life is upwards for the wise, that he may depart from Sheol beneath.
24知恵ある人の道は上って命に至る、こうしてその人は下にある陰府を離れる。
25Jehovah plucketh up the house of the proud; but he establisheth the boundary of the widow.
25主は高ぶる者の家を滅ぼし、やもめの地境を定められる。
26The thoughts of the evil [man] are an abomination to Jehovah; but pure words are pleasant.
26悪人の計りごとは主に憎まれ、潔白な人の言葉は彼に喜ばれる。
27He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.
27不正な利をむさぼる者はその家を煩らわせる、まいないを憎む者は生きながらえる。
28The heart of a righteous [man] studieth to answer; but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
28正しい者の心は答えるべきことを考える、悪しき者の口は悪を吐き出す。
29Jehovah is far from the wicked; but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
29主は悪しき者に遠ざかり、正しい者の祈を聞かれる。
30That which enlighteneth the eyes rejoiceth the heart; good tidings make the bones fat.
30目の光は心を喜ばせ、よい知らせは骨を潤す。
31The ear that heareth the reproof of life shall abide among the wise.
31ためになる戒めを聞く耳をもつ者は、知恵ある者の中にとどまる。
32He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth reproof getteth sense.
32教訓を捨てる者はおのれの命を軽んじ、戒めを重んじる者は悟りを得る。主を恐れることは知恵の教訓である、謙遜は、栄誉に先だつ。
33The fear of Jehovah is the discipline of wisdom, and before honour [goeth] humility.
