¹And Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there. And behold, he that had the right of redemption, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. And he said, Thou, such a one, turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside and sat down.

¹ボアズは町の門のところへ上っていって、そこにすわった。すると、さきにボアズが言った親戚の人が通り過ぎようとしたので、ボアズはその人に言った、「友よ、こちらへきて、ここにおすわりください」。彼はきてすわった。

²And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit down here. And they sat down.

²ボアズはまた町の長老十人を招いて言った、「ここにおすわりください」。彼らがすわった時、

³And he said to him that had the right of redemption: Naomi, who is come back out of the country of Moab, sells the allotment that was our brother Elimelech's.

³ボアズは親戚の人に言った、「モアブの地から帰ってきたナオミは、われわれの親族エリメレクの地所を売ろうとしています。

⁴And I thought I would apprise thee of it and say, Buy [it] in the presence of the inhabitants, and in the presence of the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem [it], redeem; but if thou wilt not redeem, tell me, that I may know; for there is none to redeem besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem [it].

⁴それでわたしはそのことをあなたに知らせて、ここにすわっている人々と、民の長老たちの前で、それを買いなさいと、あなたに言おうと思いました。もし、あなたが、それをあがなおうと思われるならば、あがなってください。しかし、あなたがそれをあがなわないならば、わたしにそう言って知らせてください。それをあがなう人は、あなたのほかにはなく、わたしはあなたの次ですから」。彼は言った、「わたしがあがないましょう」。

⁵And Boaz said, On the day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy [it] also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

⁵そこでボアズは言った、「あなたがナオミの手からその地所を買う時には、死んだ者の妻であったモアブの女ルツをも買って、死んだ者の名を起してその嗣業を伝えなければなりません」。

⁶And he that had the right of redemption said, I cannot redeem [it] for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance. Redeem thou for thyself what I should redeem, for I cannot redeem [it].

⁶その親戚の人は言った、「それでは、わたしにはあがなうことができません。そんなことをすれば自分の嗣業をそこないます。あなたがわたしに代って、自分であがなってください。わたしはあがなうことができませんから」。

⁷Now this [was the custom] in former time in Israel concerning redemption and concerning exchange, to confirm the whole matter: a man drew off his sandal, and gave it to his neighbour, and this was the [mode of] attestation in Israel.

⁷むかしイスラエルでは、物をあがなう事と、権利の譲渡について、万事を決定する時のならわしはこうであった。すなわち、その人は、自分のくつを脱いで、相手の人に渡した。これがイスラエルでの証明の方法であった。

⁸And he that had the right of redemption said to Boaz, Buy for thyself; and he drew off his sandal.

⁸そこで親戚の人がボアズにむかい「あなたが自分であがないなさい」と言って、そのくつを脱いだので、

⁹And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi;

⁹ボアズは長老たちとすべての民に言った、「あなたがたは、きょう、わたしがエリメレクのすべての物およびキリオンとマロンのすべての物をナオミの手から買いとった事の証人です。

¹⁰moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

¹⁰またわたしはマロンの妻であったモアブの女ルツをも買って、わたしの妻としました。これはあの死んだ者の名を起してその嗣業を伝え、死んだ者の名がその一族から、またその郷里の門から断絶しないようにするためです。きょうあなたがたは、その証人です」。

¹¹And all the people that were in the gate and the elders said, [We are] witnesses. Jehovah make the woman that cometh into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel; and acquire power in Ephratah, and make thyself a name in Bethlehem;

¹¹すると門にいたすべての民と長老たちは言った、「わたしたちは証人です。どうぞ、主があなたの家にはいる女を、イスラエルの家をたてたラケルとレアのふたりのようにされますよう。どうぞ、あなたがエフラタで富を得、ベツレヘムで名を揚げられますように。

¹²and let thy house become like the house of Pherez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which Jehovah shall give thee of this young woman.

¹²どうぞ、主がこの若い女によってあなたに賜わる子供により、あなたの家が、かのタマルがユダに産んだペレヅの家のようになりますように」。

¹³And Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in unto her, and Jehovah gave her conception, and she bore a son.

¹³こうしてボアズはルツをめとって妻とし、彼女のところにはいった。主は彼女をみごもらせられたので、彼女はひとりの男の子を産んだ。

¹⁴And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be Jehovah who hath not left thee this day without one that has the right of redemption, and may his name be famous in Israel!

¹⁴そのとき、女たちはナオミに言った、「主はほむべきかな、主はあなたを見捨てずに、きょう、あなたにひとりの近親をお授けになりました。どうぞ、その子の名がイスラエルのうちに高く揚げられますように。

¹⁵And he shall be to thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age; for thy daughter-in-law who loves thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, has borne him.

¹⁵彼はあなたのいのちを新たにし、あなたの老年を養う者となるでしょう。あなたを愛するあなたの嫁、七人のむすこにもまさる彼女が彼を産んだのですから」。

¹⁶And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse to it.

¹⁶そこでナオミはその子をとり、ふところに置いて、養い育てた。

¹⁷And the women [her] neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi. And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

¹⁷近所の女たちは「ナオミに男の子が生れた」と言って、彼に名をつけ、その名をオベデと呼んだ。彼はダビデの父であるエッサイの父となった。

¹⁸Now these are the generations of Pherez. Pherez begot Hezron,

¹⁹and Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab,

¹⁹ヘヅロンからラムが生れ、ラムからアミナダブが生れ、

²⁰and Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon,

²⁰アミナダブからナションが生れ、ナションからサルモンが生れ、

²¹and Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed,

²¹サルモンからボアズが生れ、ボアズからオベデが生れ、オベデからエッサイが生れ、エッサイからダビデが生れた。

²²and Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.
