¹And I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter.

²Then I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive;

²Ary ny maty izay efa maty ela dia nataoko ho sambatra noho ny velona izay mbola velona,

³and more fortunate than both is he who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

³nefa tsara indray noho izy roa tonta aza ny tsy ary, izay tsy nahita ny ratsy atao atỳ ambanin'ny masoandro akory.

⁴And I saw all labour, and all success of work, that it is man's jealousy of his neighbour. This also is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

⁴Ary hitako ny fisasarana rehetra sy ny fahaizan-javatra rehetra, fa avy amin'ny fifampialonan'ny olona izany. Zava-poana sy misambo-drivotra foana koa izany.[Na: Homan-drivotra]

⁵The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

⁵Ny adala manohon-tanana ka homana ny tenany.

⁶Better is a handful with quietness, than both hands full with labour and pursuit of the wind.

⁷And I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

⁷Ary izao koa no zava-poana hitako atỳ ambanin'ny masoandro:

⁸There is one [alone] and without a second; also he hath neither son nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour, neither is his eye satisfied with riches, and [he saith not], For whom then am I labouring, and depriving my soul of good? This also is vanity and a grievous occupation.

⁸Misy mitoetra irery ka tsy mana-namana, eny, tsy manan-janaka na rahalahy aza, nefa tsy misy farany ny fisasarany rehetra, ary ny masony tsy afa-po amin'ny harena, hanaovany hoe: Ho an'iza no isasarako sy tsy ampananako soa ny fanahiko? Zava-poana sy asa mahareraka koa izany.

⁹Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

⁹Tsara ny roa noho ny iray; fa misy valiny tsara ny fisasarany.

¹⁰For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and who hath not another to lift him up!

¹⁰Raha misy lavo izy, dia arenin'ny namany; fa mahantra ny lavo izay tsy manana namana hanarina azy.

¹¹Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one alone be warm?

¹¹Ary koa, raha miara-mandry ny roa, dia mafana izy; fa hatao ahoana no hampahafana ny irery?

¹²And if a [man] overpower the one, the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

¹²Raha misy maharesy ny irery aza, ny roa tsy ho leony tsy akory; ary ny mahazaka telo olana tsy mora tapahina.

¹³Better is a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth no more how to be admonished.

¹³Aleo zatovo malahelo hendry toy izay mpanjaka antitra adala ka tsy laitra anarina intsony;

¹⁴For out of the prison-house he came forth to reign, although he was born poor in his kingdom.

¹⁴fa avy ao an-tranomaizina no nivoahany hanjaka, na dia nateraka tamin'alahelo tamin'ny fanjakany aza izy. [na: fa na dia nateraka tamin'ny fanjakany aza izy, dia tamin'alahelo ihany]

¹⁵I saw all the living that walk under the sun, with the child, the second, that should stand up in his stead.

¹⁵Hitako ny miaina rehetra izay miriaria atỳ ambanin'ny masoandro manotrona ilay zazalahy dia ilay faharoa izay mitsangana handimby ny teo.

¹⁶[There is] no end of all the people, of all that stood before them; those however that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after the wind.

¹⁶Tsy hita isa ny olona rehetra, dia izay rehetra anjakany; nefa izay any aoriana tsy mba hifaly aminy; fa zava-poana sy misambo-drivotra foana koa izany.[Na: Homan-drivotra][Ny mety hatao amin'Andriamanitra na amin'ny fivavahana na amin'ny voady] Tandremo ny tongotrao, raha mankao an-tranon'Andriamanitra ianao; fa ny manatona hihaino no tsara noho ny fanateran'ny adala fanatitra; fa tsy fantatr'ireny ho manao ratsy izy.
