¹And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had much cattle, a very great multitude; and they saw the land of Jaazer, and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for cattle.

²And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the assembly, saying,

⁴the country that Jehovah smote before the assembly of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle;

⁵and they said, If we have found favour in thine eyes, let this land be given to thy servants for a possession: bring us not over the Jordan.

⁶And Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall *ye* abide here?

⁷And why do ye discourage the children of Israel from going over into the land that Jehovah has given them?

⁸Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land:

⁸Izany no nataon'ny rainareo, fony nirahiko avy tao Kadesi-barnea hisafo ny tany izy;

⁹they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, and discouraged the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land that Jehovah had given them.

⁹fa raha niakatra hatrany an-dohasaha Eskola izy ka nahita ny tany, dia nampiketraka ny fon'ny Zanak'Isiraely izy, mba tsy handehanany ho any amin'ny tany izay efa nomen'i Jehovah azy.

¹⁰And Jehovah's anger was kindled the same time, and he swore, saying,

¹⁰Ary nirehitra ny fahatezeran'i Jehovah tamin'izay andro izay, dia nianiana Izy ka nanao hoe:

¹¹If the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob! for they have not wholly followed me;

¹²save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have wholly followed Jehovah.

¹³And Jehovah's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation was consumed that had done evil in the eyes of Jehovah.

¹⁴And behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, a progeny of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Jehovah toward Israel.

¹⁴Ary, indreto, ianareo mitsangana hisolo ny rainareo, ho taranaka mbola mpanota, hampitombo ny firehetan'ny fahatezeran'i Jehovah amin'ny Isiraely.

¹⁵If ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

¹⁶And they drew near to him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones;

¹⁷but we ourselves will go with diligence armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones shall dwell in the strong cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

¹⁸We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited each one his inheritance.

¹⁸Tsy hody any an-tranonay izahay, mandra-pahazon'ny Zanak'Isiraely ny zara-taniny avy.

¹⁹For we will not inherit with them on yonder side the Jordan, and further, because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side the Jordan eastward.

²⁰And Moses said to them, If ye do this thing, if ye arm yourselves before Jehovah for war,

²⁰Dia hoy Mosesy taminy: Raha hanao izany zavatra izany ianareo ka hiomana eo anatrehan'i Jehovah ho any an-tafika,

²¹and all of you that are armed go over the Jordan before Jehovah, until he have dispossessed his enemies from before him,

²¹ary rehefa samy efa voaomana hiady, dia hita ho any an-dafin'i Jordana eo anatrehan'i Jehovah, mandra-pandroakany ny fahavalony hiala eo anoloany,

²²and the land is subdued before Jehovah, and afterwards ye return, ye shall be guiltless toward Jehovah and toward Israel, and this land shall be your possession before Jehovah.

²³But if ye do not do so, behold, ye have sinned against Jehovah, and be sure your sin will find you out.

²⁴Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and folds for your flocks, and do that which has gone out of your mouth.

²⁵And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commands.

²⁵Dia niteny tamin'i Mosesy ny taranak'i Gada sy ny taranak'i Robena ka nanao hoe: Ny mpanomponao dia hanao araka izay andidianao, tompoko:

²⁶Our little ones, our wives, our cattle, and all our beasts shall be there in the cities of Gilead;

²⁶ny zanakay madinika sy ny vadinay sy ny ondry aman'osinay ary ny biby fiompinay rehetra dia hitoetra ato amin'ny tanànan'i Gileada;

²⁷but thy servants will pass over, every one armed for war, before Jehovah to battle, as my lord says.

²⁸So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel.

²⁹And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben pass with you over the Jordan, every one armed for battle, before Jehovah, and the land be subdued before you, then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;

³⁰but if they do not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

³¹And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As Jehovah has said to thy servants, so will we do.

³¹Dia namaly ny taranak'i Gada sy ny taranak'i Robena ka nanao hoe: Araka izay nolazain'i Jehovah tamin'ny mpanomponao no hataonay:

³²We will pass over armed before Jehovah into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance on this side the Jordan shall be ours.

³²Izabay handeha hita eo anatrehan'i Jehovah ho any amin'ny tany Kanana samy efa voaomana hiady, kanefa etỳ an-dafin'i Jordana etỳ ihany no hahazoanay zara-tany.

³³And Moses gave to them, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og the king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and territories, the cities of the land round about.

³⁴And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

³⁴Ary ny taranak'i Gada nanao an'i Dibona sy Atarota sy Aroera

³⁵and Atroth-Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbebah,

³⁵sy Atrota-sofana sy Jazera ary Jogbeha

³⁶and Beth-Nimrah, and Beth-haran, strong cities, and sheepfolds.

³⁷-- And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elaleh, and Kirjathaim,

³⁸and Nebo, and Baal-meon (of which the names were changed), and Sibmah; and they gave other names to the cities that they built.

³⁹-- And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and they dispossessed the Amorites that were therein.

⁴⁰And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

⁴¹And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took their hamlets, and called them Havoth-Jair.

⁴²And Nobah went and took Kenath, and its dependent villages, and called it Nobah, after his name.
