1The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
1¶ Ko nga whakatauki a Horomona. He tama whakaaro nui, ka koa te papa: tena he tama kuware, he utanga nui mo tona whaea.
2Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death.
2¶ Kahore he rawa o nga taonga o te kino: ma te tika ia te oranga ake i te mate.
3Jehovah suffereth not the soul of the righteous [man] to famish; but he repelleth the craving of the wicked.
3E kore a Ihowa e tuku i te wairua o te tangata tika kia hemokai: ka pana atu ia e ia te hiahia o te hunga kino.
4He cometh to want that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
4¶ He rawakore te tukunga iho o te ringa ngehe: ma te ringa kakama ia ka hua te taonga.
5He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
5¶ He kohi raumati ta tama ngakau mahara: he whakama ia te rawa a tama moe ngahuru.
6Blessings are upon the head of a righteous [man]; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
6¶ He manaaki kei te tumuaki o te tangata tika: he arita ia kei te waha o te tangata kino, taupoki ai.
7The memory of the righteous [man] shall be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
8The wise in heart receiveth commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.
8¶ He ngakau whakaaro, ka tahuritia te whakahau: he ngutu wairangi, ka hinga.
9He that walketh in integrity walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
10He that winketh with the eye causeth grief, and a prating fool shall fall.
11The mouth of a righteous [man] is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
11¶ He puna ora te mangai o te tangata tika; tena ko te mangai o te hunga kino, ka taupokina tera e te mahi nanakia.
12Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions.
12¶ Ko to te mauahara he whakaoho i nga totohe; ko te aroha he hipoki i nga he katoa.
13In the lips of an intelligent [man] wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
14The wise lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the fool is near destruction.
14¶ Rongoa ai te hunga whakaaro nui i te matauranga: he whakangaromanga ia kei te hori tonu, te mangai o te wairangi.
15The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
16The labour of a righteous [man] [tendeth] to life; the revenue of a wicked [man], to sin.
16¶ Ko te mahi a te tangata tika e ahu ana ki te ora: ko nga hua o te kino ki te hara.
17Keeping instruction is the path to life; but he that forsaketh reproof goeth astray.
18He that covereth hatred hath lying lips, and he that sendeth forth a slander is a fool.
18¶ Ko te tangata e huna ana i te mauahara he ngutu teka: a he kuware te tangata e whakapuaki ana i te ngautuara.
19In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that restraineth his lips doeth wisely.
19¶ E kore nga kupu maha e hapa i te kino; he mahara nui ia te tangata he ngutu kokopi nei ona.
20The tongue of the righteous [man] is [as] choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth.
20¶ He hiriwa pai rawa te arero o te tangata tika; ko te ngakau o te hunga kino, he hauwarea rawa.
21The lips of a righteous [man] feed many; but fools die for want of understanding.
21He tokomaha e whangaia ana e nga ngutu o te tangata tika; ka mate ia te hunga kuware, he kore no te ngakau mahara.
22The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow to it.
23It is as sport to a foolish [man] to do wickedness; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
23¶ Hei takaro ma te wairangi te mahi he; ma te tangata matau ia ko te whakaaro nui.
24The fear of a wicked [man], it shall come upon him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
24¶ Ko ta te tangata kino i wehi ai ka tae ano ki a ia; a, ko ta te hunga tika i hiahia ai, ka homai.
25As a whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no [more]; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
25Pahure rawa ake te tukauati kua kore te hunga kino: tena ko te tangata tika he turanga pumau tera.
26As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
26¶ He winika ki nga niho, he paowa ki nga kanohi: koia ano te mangere ki ona kaiunga.
27The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
28The hope of the righteous is joy; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
28Tumanako atu te hunga tika, koa iho; tumanako atu te hunga kino, ngaro iho.
29The way of Jehovah is strength to the perfect [man], but destruction to the workers of iniquity.
29¶ He kaha mo te tangata tika ta Ihowa ara; he whakangaromanga ia mo nga kaimahi i te kino.
30The righteous [man] shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land.
30E kore te tangata tika e whakangaueuetia a ake ake; e kore ia e nohoia e te hunga kino te whenua.
31The mouth of a righteous [man] putteth forth wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
31¶ Ko te mangai o te tangata tika hua ana te whakaaro nui; ka tapahia ia te arero whanoke.
32The lips of a righteous [man] know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is frowardness.
