¹And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father; for Hiram always loved David.

¹Kongen i Tyrus Hiram sendte sine tjenere til Salomo, da han hadde fått høre at han var blitt salvet til konge i sin fars sted; for Hiram hadde alltid vært en venn av David.

²And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

²Og Salomo sendte bud til Hiram og lot si:

³Thou knowest that David my father could not build a house unto the name of Jehovah his God, because of the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.

³Du vet at min far David ikke kunde bygge et hus for Herrens, sin Guds navn for de krigers skyld hvormed de hadde omringet ham, inntil Herren la dem under hans føtter.

⁴But now Jehovah my God has given me rest on every side: there is neither adversary nor evil event.

⁴Men nu har Herren min Gud gitt mig ro rundt omkring; det finnes ingen motstandere, og ingen ulykker truer.

⁵And behold, I purpose to build a house unto the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spoke to David my father saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy stead, he shall build a house unto my name.

⁵Derfor tenker jeg nu på å bygge et hus for Herrens, min Guds navn, således som Herren sa da han talte således til min far David: Din sønn, som jeg vil sette på din trone i ditt sted, han skal bygge huset for mitt navn.

⁶And now command that they hew me cedar-trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants; and I will give thee hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt say; for thou knowest that there is not among us any that are experienced in cutting timber like to the Zidonians.

⁶Så byd nu at de skal hugge sedrer for mig på Libanon, så skal mine tjenere være med dine tjenere, og lønnen til dine tjenere vil jeg gi dig efter som du selv bestemmer; for du vet at det ikke finnes nogen blandt oss som skjønner sig så godt på å hugge trær som sidonierne.

⁷And it came to pass when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Jehovah this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.

⁷Da Hiram mottok dette budskap fra Salomo, blev han meget glad, og han sa: Lovet være Herren idag, som har gitt David en vis sønn og satt ham over dette store folk!

⁸And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have heard the things which thou sentest to me for: I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of cypress.

⁸Og Hiram sendte bud til Salomo og lot si: Jeg har mottatt det budskap du har sendt mig; jeg skal i alle måter gjøre som du ønsker med sedertrærne og cypresstrærne.

⁹My servants shall bring [them] down from Lebanon to the sea; and I will convey them by sea [in] rafts to the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shalt receive them. And thou shalt accomplish my desire in giving food for my household.

⁹Mine tjenere skal føre dem fra Libanon ned til havet, og jeg vil la dem legge i flåter på havet og føre til det sted du vil sende mig bud om, og la dem ta fra hverandre der, og så lar du dem hente. Men så må du gjøre det jeg ønsker, og la mig få fødevarer til mitt hus.

¹⁰So Hiram gave Solomon cedar-trees and cypress-trees [according to] all his desire.

¹⁰Og Hiram lot Salomo få sedertrær og cypresstrær, så meget som han ønsket.

¹¹And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat as food for his household, and twenty measures of beaten oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.

¹¹Og Salomo gav Hiram tyve tusen kor hvete til føde for hans hus og tyve kor olje av støtte oliven; så meget gav Salomo Hiram år efter år.

¹²And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom as he promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league.

¹²Herren gav Salomo visdom, således som han hadde lovt ham; og det var fred mellem Hiram og Salomo, og de gjorde en pakt med hverandre.

¹³And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.

¹³Og kong Salomo uttok pliktarbeidere av hele Israel, og pliktarbeiderne var tretti tusen mann.

¹⁴And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, two months at home; and Adoniram was over the levy.

¹⁴Dem sendte han skiftevis til Libanon, ti tusen om måneden; en måned var de på Libanon og to måneder hjemme. Adoniram hadde opsyn med pliktarbeiderne.

¹⁵And Solomon had seventy thousand that bore burdens, and eighty thousand stone-masons in the mountains;

¹⁵Salomo hadde sytti tusen bærere og åtti tusen stenhuggere på fjellene,

¹⁶besides the overseers whom Solomon had set over the work, three thousand three hundred, who ruled over the people that wrought in the work.

¹⁶foruten arbeidsformennene, som var tre tusen og tre hundre i tallet; de rådet over de folk som utførte arbeidet.

¹⁷And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, hewn stones, to lay the foundation of the house.

¹⁷Og kongen bød at de skulde bryte store og kostbare stener, så grunnvollen til huset kunde legges ned med huggen sten.

¹⁸And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Giblites hewed them, and prepared timber and stones to build the house.

¹⁸Og Salomos bygningsmenn og Hirams bygningsmenn og giblittene* hugg dem til og gjorde i stand både stokkene og stenene som huset skulde bygges av. / {* ESK 27, 9.}
