¹And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell before thee is too strait for us.

¹Profetenes disipler sa til Elisa: Huset som vi sitter i her hos dig, er for trangt for oss.

²Let us go, we pray thee, to the Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he said, Go.

²La oss få gå til Jordan og der hente hver sin bjelke og så bygge oss et hus der som vi kan holde til i! Han svarte: Ja, gjør det!

³And one said, Consent, I pray thee, to go with thy servants. And he said, I will go.

³Da sa en av dem: Vær så snild og gå med dine tjenere! Han svarte: Ja, jeg skal gå med.

⁴And he went with them. And they came to the Jordan and cut down the trees.

⁴Så gikk han med dem, og da de kom til Jordan, tok de til å felle trær.

⁵And it came to pass as one was felling a beam, that the iron fell into the water; and he cried and said, Alas, master, and it was borrowed!

⁵Men da en av dem felte sin bjelke, falt øksen i vannet; da ropte han: Å, min herre, den var enda lånt.

⁶And the man of God said, Where did it fall? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither, and made the iron to swim.

⁶Da sa den Guds mann: Hvor falt den? Han viste ham stedet; da hugg han av et stykke tre og kastet det dit ned og fikk øksen til å flyte op.

⁷And he said, Take [it] up to thee. And he put out his hand and took it.

⁷Og han sa: Ta den op! Så rakte mannen ut hånden og tok den.

⁸And the king of Syria warred against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place [shall be] my camp.

⁸Kongen i Syria lå i krig med Israel; og han rådførte sig med sine menn og sa: På det og det sted vil jeg slå leir.

⁹And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place, for thither the Syrians are come down.

⁹Men den Guds mann sendte bud til Israels konge og lot si: Ta dig i vare for å dra forbi dette sted! For der vil syrerne dra ned.

¹⁰And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and he was on his guard there. [That took place] not once, nor twice.

¹⁰Så sendte Israels konge folk til det sted som den Guds mann hadde nevnt for ham og advart ham for, og han tok sig i vare der. Dette hendte ikke bare en gang, men flere ganger.

¹¹And the heart of the king of Syria was troubled because of this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?

¹¹Kongen i Syria blev meget urolig over dette; han kalte sine menn til sig og sa til dem: Kan I ikke si mig hvem det er av våre folk som holder med Israels konge?

¹²And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

¹²Da sa en av hans menn: Det har sig ikke så, herre konge; det er Elisa, profeten i Israel, som åpenbarer for Israels konge hvert ord du taler i ditt sovekammer.

¹³And he said, Go and see where he is, and I will send and fetch him. And it was told him saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

¹³Han sa: Gå og se å få rede på hvor han er, så jeg kan sende folk dit og la ham hente! Da det så blev meldt ham at han var i Dotan,

¹⁴And he sent thither horses and chariots, and a great host, and they came by night and surrounded the city.

¹⁴sendte han hester og vogner og en stor hær dit; de kom der om natten og omringet byen.

¹⁵And when the attendant of the man of God rose early and went forth, behold, an army surrounded the city, with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

¹⁵Og da den Guds manns tjener tidlig om morgenen gikk ut, fikk han se at en hær med hester og vogner omringet byen. Da sa hans dreng til ham: Å, min herre, hvad skal vi gjøre?

¹⁶And he said, Fear not, for they that are with us are more than they that are with them.

¹⁶Han svarte: Vær ikke redd! De som er med oss, er flere enn de som er med dem.

¹⁷And Elisha prayed and said, Jehovah, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

¹⁷Og Elisa bad og sa: Herre! Oplat hans øine, så han kan se! Og Herren oplot drengens øine, og han fikk se at fjellet var fullt av gloende hester og vogner rundt omkring Elisa.

¹⁸And they came down to him; and Elisha prayed to Jehovah and said, Smite this nation, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

¹⁸Da så syrerne kom ned til ham, bad Elisa til Herren og sa: Slå dette folk med blindhet! Og han slo dem med blindhet, som Elisa hadde bedt om.

¹⁹And Elisha said to them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

¹⁹Da sa Elisa til dem: Dette er ikke den rette vei og ikke den rette by; følg mig, så skal jeg føre eder til den mann I leter efter. Så førte han dem til Samaria.

²⁰And it came to pass when they entered into Samaria, that Elisha said, Jehovah, open the eyes of these [men] that they may see. And Jehovah opened their eyes, and they saw, and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

²⁰Og da de kom inn i Samaria, sa Elisa: Herre, oplat deres øine, så de kan se! Og Herren oplot deres øine, og de fikk se at de var midt i Samaria.

²¹And the king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite? shall I smite [them]?

²¹Da Israels konge så dem, sa han til Elisa: Skal jeg hugge dem ned, min far, skal jeg hugge dem ned?

²²And he said, Thou shalt not smite [them]: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

²²Han svarte: Du skal ikke hugge dem ned; hugger du vel ned dem som du gjør til fanger med ditt sverd og din bue*? Sett brød og vann for dem, så de kan ete og drikke og så vende tilbake til sin herre! / {* du dreper ikke engang krigsfanger, langt mindre bør du da drepe disse.}

²³And he prepared a great repast for them, and they ate and drank; and he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

²³Da lot han stelle til et måltid for dem, og de åt og derefter lot han dem fare, vendte tilbake til sin herre. Siden kom det ikke mere syriske herjeflokker inn i Israels land.

²⁴And it came to pass after this that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.

²⁴Nogen tid efter samlet kongen i Syria Benhadad hele sin hær og drog op og kringsatte Samaria.

²⁵And there was a great famine in Samaria; and behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was worth eighty silver-pieces, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung five silver-pieces.

²⁵Og mens de holdt Samaria kringsatt, blev det så stor hungersnød i byen at til sist hodet av et asen kostet åtti sekel sølv, og fjerdedelen av en kab duemøkk fem sekel sølv.

²⁶And it came to pass as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman to him saying, Help, my lord O king!

²⁶Og da Israels konge engang gikk omkring på muren, ropte en kvinne til ham: Hjelp, herre konge!

²⁷And he said, If Jehovah do not help thee, whence should I help thee? Out of the threshing-floor, or out of the winepress?

²⁷Han svarte: Når Herren ikke vil hjelpe dig, hvorfra skulde da jeg hente hjelp til dig? Fra treskeplassen eller fra vinpersen?

²⁸And the king said to her, What aileth thee? And she said, This woman said to me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to-day, and we will eat my son to-morrow.

²⁸Og kongen spurte henne: Hvad fattes dig? Hun svarte: Denne kvinne sa til mig: Kom hit med din sønn, så vil vi ete ham idag, og imorgen vil vi ete min sønn.

²⁹And we boiled my son, and ate him: and I said to her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; and she has hidden her son.

²⁹Så kokte vi min sønn og åt ham. Dagen efter sa jeg til henne: Kom nu hit med din sønn, så vil vi ete ham. Men hun gjemte bort sin sønn.

³⁰And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his garments; and he was passing by upon the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

³⁰Da kongen hørte det som kvinnen fortalte, sønderrev han sine klær, som han gikk der omkring på muren; da fikk folket se at han hadde sekk innenfor på sitt legeme.

³¹And he said, God do so, and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall remain on him this day!

³¹Og han sa: Gud la det gå mig ille både nu og siden, om Elisas, Safats sønns hode skal bli sittende på ham idag!

³²And Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him. And [the king] sent a man before him. Before the messenger came to him, he himself said to the elders, Do ye see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? See, when the messenger comes; shut the door, and keep him off with the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?

³²Mens Elisa satt i sitt hus, og de eldste satt der hos ham, sendte kongen en mann dit foran sig; men før budet kom til ham*, sa han til de eldste: Ser I at denne mordersønn** har sendt bud hit for å ta mitt hode? Se nu til å stenge døren når budet kommer, og trykke ham tilbake med den! Høres ikke allerede lyden av hans herres trin efter ham? / {* Elisa.} / {** Akabs sønn, 1KG 19, 10. 14; 21, 19.}

³³And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. And [the king] said, Behold, this evil is of Jehovah: why should I wait for Jehovah any longer?

³³Mens han ennu talte med dem, kom budet ned til ham. Da sa han*: Se for en ulykke** det er kommet fra Herren! Hvorfor skulde jeg lenger bie på Herren? / {* kongen som var kommet efter budet.} / {** 2KG 6, 29.}
