¹Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

¹ܒܫܢܬ ܚܡܫܥܤܪܐ ܕܝܢ ܕܡܠܟܘܬܗ ܕܛܝܒܪܝܘܤ ܩܤܪ ܒܗܓܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܦܢܛܝܘܤ ܦܝܠܛܘܤ ܒܝܗܘܕ ܟܕ ܪܫܐ ܪܒܝܥܝܐ ܗܪܘܕܤ ܒܓܠܝܠܐ ܘܦܝܠܝܦܘܤ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܪܫܐ ܪܒܝܥܝܐ ܒܐܝܛܘܪܝܐ ܘܒܐܬܪܐ ܕܛܪܟܘܢܐ ܘܠܘܤܢܝܐ ܪܫܐ ܪܒܝܥܝܐ ܕܐܒܝܠܝܢܐ ܀

²in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, [the] word of God came upon John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

²ܒܪܒܘܬ ܟܗܢܘܬܐ ܕܚܢܢ ܘܕܩܝܦܐ ܗܘܬ ܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܥܠ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܒܪ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܒܚܘܪܒܐ ܀

³And he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching [the] baptism of repentance for [the] remission of sins,

³ܘܐܬܐ ܒܟܠܗ ܐܬܪܐ ܕܚܕܪܝ ܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܟܕ ܡܟܪܙ ܡܥܡܘܕܝܬܐ ܕܬܝܒܘܬܐ ܠܫܘܒܩܢܐ ܕܚܛܗܐ ܀

⁴as it is written in [the] book of [the] words of Esaias the prophet: Voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.

⁴ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܟܬܝܒ ܒܟܬܒܐ ܕܡܠܐ ܕܐܫܥܝܐ ܢܒܝܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܩܠܐ ܕܩܪܐ ܒܚܘܪܒܐ ܛܝܒܘ ܐܘܪܚܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܘܬܪܘܨܘ ܒܦܩܥܬܐ ܫܒܝܠܐ ܠܐܠܗܢ ܀

⁵Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked [places] shall become a straight [path], and the rough places smooth ways,

⁵ܟܠܗܘܢ ܢܚܠܐ ܢܬܡܠܘܢ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܛܘܪܐ ܘܪܡܬܐ ܢܬܡܟܟܘܢ ܘܢܗܘܐ ܥܪܡܐ ܠܫܦܝܐ ܘܐܬܪܐ ܥܤܩܐ ܠܦܩܥܬܐ ܀

⁶and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁶ܘܢܚܙܐ ܟܠ ܒܤܪ ܚܝܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܀

⁷He said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?

⁷ܘܐܡܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܟܢܫܐ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܐܬܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܘܬܗ ܠܡܥܡܕ ܝܠܕܐ ܕܐܟܕܢܐ ܡܢܘ ܚܘܝܟܘܢ ܠܡܥܪܩ ܡܢ ܪܘܓܙܐ ܕܥܬܝܕ ܀

⁸Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father, for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

⁸ܥܒܕܘ ܗܟܝܠ ܦܐܪܐ ܕܫܘܝܢ ܠܬܝܒܘܬܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܫܪܘܢ ܠܡܐܡܪ ܒܢܦܫܟܘܢ ܕܐܒܐ ܐܝܬ ܠܢ ܐܒܪܗܡ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܕܡܢ ܗܠܝܢ ܟܐܦܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܐܠܗܐ ܠܡܩܡܘ ܒܢܝܐ ܠܐܒܪܗܡ ܀

⁹And already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into [the] fire.

⁹ܗܐ ܕܝܢ ܢܪܓܐ ܤܝܡ ܥܠ ܥܩܪܐ ܕܐܝܠܢܐ ܟܠ ܐܝܠܢܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܦܐܪܐ ܛܒܐ ܠܐ ܥܒܕ ܡܬܦܤܩ ܘܒܢܘܪܐ ܢܦܠ ܀

¹⁰And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then?

¹⁰ܘܡܫܐܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ ܟܢܫܐ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܡܢܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܢܥܒܕ ܀

¹¹And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

¹¹ܥܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܬܪܬܝܢ ܟܘܬܝܢܝܢ ܢܬܠ ܠܡܢ ܕܠܝܬ ܠܗ ܘܡܢ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܤܝܒܪܬܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܀

¹²And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do?

¹²ܘܐܬܘ ܐܦ ܡܟܤܐ ܠܡܥܡܕ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܡܠܦܢܐ ܡܢܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܀

¹³And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you.

¹³ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܠܐ ܬܬܒܥܘܢ ܡܕܡ ܝܬܝܪ ܥܠ ܡܐ ܕܦܩܝܕ ܠܟܘܢ ܠܡܬܒܥ ܀

¹⁴And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.

¹⁴ܘܡܫܐܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ ܦܠܚܝ ܐܤܛܪܛܝܐ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܡܢܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܐܦ ܚܢܢ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܠܐ ܒܐܢܫ ܬܬܛܓܪܘܢ ܘܠܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܬܥܫܩܘܢ ܘܢܤܦܩܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܐܦܤܘܢܝܬܟܘܢ ܀

¹⁵But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether *he* might be the Christ,

¹⁵ܟܕ ܕܝܢ ܡܤܒܪ ܗܘܐ ܥܡܐ ܥܠ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܡܬܚܫܒܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܒܠܒܗܘܢ ܕܕܠܡܐ ܗܘܝܘ ܡܫܝܚܐ ܀

¹⁶John answered all, saying, *I* indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;

¹⁶ܥܢܐ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܐܢܐ ܗܐ ܡܥܡܕ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܒܡܝܐ ܐܬܐ ܕܝܢ ܗܘ ܕܚܝܠܬܢ ܡܢܝ ܗܘ ܕܠܐ ܫܘܐ ܐܢܐ ܕܐܫܪܐ ܥܪܩܐ ܕܡܤܢܘܗܝ ܗܘ ܢܥܡܕܟܘܢ ܒܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܘܒܢܘܪܐ ܀

¹⁷whose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

¹⁷ܗܘ ܕܐܚܝܕ ܪܦܫܐ ܒܐܝܕܗ ܘܡܕܟܐ ܐܕܪܘܗܝ ܘܚܛܐ ܟܢܫ ܠܐܘܨܪܘܗܝ ܘܬܒܢܐ ܢܘܩܕ ܒܢܘܪܐ ܕܠܐ ܕܥܟܐ ܀

¹⁸Exhorting then many other things also he announced [his] glad tidings to the people.

¹⁸ܐܦ ܐܚܪܢܝܬܐ ܕܝܢ ܤܓܝܐܬܐ ܡܠܦ ܗܘܐ ܘܡܤܒܪ ܠܥܡܐ ܀

¹⁹But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done,

¹⁹ܗܪܘܕܤ ܕܝܢ ܛܛܪܪܟܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܬܟܤܤ ܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܥܠ ܗܪܘܕܝܐ ܐܢܬܬ ܦܝܠܝܦܘܤ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܘܥܠ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܗܘܐ ܀

²⁰added this also to all [the rest], that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰ܐܘܤܦ ܐܦ ܗܕܐ ܥܠ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܘܚܒܫܗ ܠܝܘܚܢܢ ܒܝܬ ܐܤܝܪܐ ܀

²¹And it came to pass, all the people having been baptised, and Jesus having been baptised and praying, that the heaven was opened,

²¹ܗܘܐ ܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܥܡܕ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܘܐܦ ܝܫܘܥ ܥܡܕ ܘܟܕ ܡܨܠܐ ܐܬܦܬܚܘ ܫܡܝܐ ܀

²²and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove upon him; and a voice came out of heaven, *Thou* art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight.

²²ܘܢܚܬܬ ܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܒܕܡܘܬ ܓܘܫܡܐ ܕܝܘܢܐ ܘܩܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܫܡܝܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܐܢܬ ܗܘ ܒܪܝ ܚܒܝܒܐ ܕܒܟ ܐܨܛܒܝܬ ܀

²³And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old; being as was supposed son of Joseph; of Eli,

²³ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܗܘܐ ܐܝܟ ܒܪ ܫܢܝܢ ܬܠܬܝܢ ܘܡܤܬܒܪ ܗܘܐ ܒܪ ܝܘܤܦ ܒܪ ܗܠܝ ܀

²⁴of Matthat, of Levi, of Melchi, of Janna, of Joseph,

²⁴ܒܪ ܡܛܬܬ ܒܪ ܠܘܝ ܒܪ ܡܠܟܝ ܒܪ ܝܐܢܝ ܒܪ ܝܘܤܦ ܀

²⁵of Mattathias, of Amos, of Naoum, of Esli, of Naggai,

²⁵ܒܪ ܡܬܬܐ ܒܪ ܥܡܘܨ ܒܪ ܢܚܘܡ ܒܪ ܚܤܠܝ ܒܪ ܢܓܝ ܀

²⁶of Maath, of Mattathias, of Semei, of Joseph, of Juda,

²⁶ܒܪ ܡܐܬ ܒܪ ܡܛܬ ܒܪ ܫܡܥܝ ܒܪ ܝܘܤܦ ܒܪ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܀

²⁷of Joannes, of Resa, of Zorobabel, of Salathiel, of Neri,

²⁷ܒܪ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܒܪ ܪܤܐ ܒܪ ܙܘܪܒܒܠ ܒܪ ܫܠܬܐܝܠ ܒܪ ܢܪܝ ܀

²⁸of Melchi, of Addi, of Cosam, of Elmodam, of Er,

²⁸ܒܪ ܡܠܟܝ ܒܪ ܐܕܝ ܒܪ ܩܘܤܡ ܒܪ ܐܠܡܘܕܕ ܒܪ ܥܝܪ ܀

²⁹of Joses, of Eliezer, of Joreim, of Matthat, of Levi,

²⁹ܒܪ ܝܘܤܐ ܒܪ ܐܠܝܥܙܪ ܒܪ ܝܘܪܡ ܒܪ ܡܬܝܬܐ ܒܪ ܠܘܝ ܀

³⁰of Simeon, of Juda, of Joseph, of Jonan, of Eliakim,

³⁰ܒܪ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܒܪ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܒܪ ܝܘܤܦ ܒܪ ܝܘܢܡ ܒܪ ܐܠܝܩܝܡ ܀

³¹of Meleas, of Menan, of Mattatha, of Nathan, of David,

³¹ܒܪ ܡܠܝܐ ܒܪ ܡܐܢܝ ܒܪ ܡܛܬܐ ܒܪ ܢܬܢ ܒܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܀

³²of Jesse, of Obed, of Booz, of Salmon, of Naasson,

³²ܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ ܒܪ ܥܘܒܝܕ ܒܪ ܒܥܙ ܒܪ ܤܠܡܘܢ ܒܪ ܢܚܫܘܢ ܀

³³of Aminadab, of Aram, of Esrom, of Phares, of Juda,

³³ܒܪ ܥܡܝܢܕܒ ܒܪ ܐܪܡ ܒܪ ܚܨܪܘܢ ܒܪ ܦܪܨ ܒܪ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܀

³⁴of Jacob, of Isaac, of Abraham, of Terah, of Nachor,

³⁵of Seruch, of Ragau, of Phalek, of Eber, of Sala,

³⁵ܒܪ ܤܪܘܓ ܒܪ ܐܪܥܘ ܒܪ ܦܠܓ ܒܪ ܥܒܪ ܒܪ ܫܠܚ ܀

³⁶ܒܪ ܩܝܢܢ ܒܪ ܐܪܦܟܫܪ ܒܪ ܫܝܡ ܒܪ ܢܘܚ ܒܪ ܠܡܟ ܀

³⁷of Methusala, of Enoch, of Jared, of Maleleel, of Cainan,

³⁷ܒܪ ܡܬܘܫܠܚ ܒܪ ܚܢܘܟ ܒܪ ܝܪܕ ܒܪ ܡܗܠܠܐܝܠ ܒܪ ܩܝܢܢ ܀

³⁸of Enos, of Seth, of Adam, of God.

³⁸ܒܪ ܐܢܘܫ ܒܪ ܫܝܬ ܒܪ ܐܕܡ ܕܡܢ ܐܠܗܐ ܀
