1When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;
1நீ ஒரு அதிபதியோடே போஜனம்பண்ண உட்கார்ந்தால், உனக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கிறதை நன்றாய்க் கவனித்துப்பார்.
2and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
2நீ போஜனப்பிரியனாயிருந்தால், உன் தொண்டையிலே கத்தியை வை.
3Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.
3அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே; அவைகள் கள்ளப்போஜனமாமே.
4Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:
4ஐசுவரியவானாகவேண்டுமென்று பிரயாசப்படாதே; சுயபுத்தியைச் சாராதே.
5wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.
5இல்லாமற்போகும் பொருள்மேல் உன் கண்களைப் பறக்கவிடுவானேன்? அது கழுகைப்போல சிறகுகளைத் தனக்கு உண்டுபண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஆகாயமார்க்கமாய்ப் பறந்துபோகும்.
6Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.
6வன்கண்ணனுடைய ஆகாரத்தைப் புசியாதே; அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே.
7For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.
7அவன் இருதயத்தின் நினைவு எப்படியோ, அப்படியே அவன் இருக்கிறான்; புசியும், பானம்பண்ணும் என்று அவன் உன்னோடே சொன்னாலும், அவன் இருதயம் உன்னோடே இராது.
8Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.
8நீ புசித்த துணிக்கையை வாந்திபண்ணி, உன் இனிய சொற்களை இழந்துபோவாய்.
9Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
9மூடனுடைய செவிகள் கேட்கப்பேசாதே; அவன் உன் வார்த்தைகளின் ஞானத்தை அசட்டை பண்ணுவான்.
10Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
10பூர்வ எல்லைக்குறியை மாற்றாதே; திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளுடைய நிலங்களை அபகரித்துக்கொள்ளாதே.
11for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.
11அவர்களுடைய மீட்பர் வல்லவர்; அவர் உன்னுடனே அவர்களுக்காக வழக்காடுவார்.
12Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
12உன் இருதயத்தைப் புத்திமதிக்கும், உன் செவிகளை அறிவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் சாய்ப்பாயாக.
13Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:
13பிள்ளையை தண்டியாமல் விடாதே; அவனைப் பிரம்பினால் அடித்தால் அவன் சாகான்.
14thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.
14நீ பிரம்பினால் அவனை அடிக்கிறதினால் பாதாளத்துக்கு அவன் ஆத்துமாவைத் தப்புவிப்பாயே.
15My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;
15என் மகனே, உன் இருதயம் ஞானமுள்ளதாயிருந்தால், என்னிலே என் இருதயம் மகிழும்.
16and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.
16உன் உதடுகள் செம்மையானவைகளைப் பேசினால், என் உள்ளிந்திரியங்கள் மகிழும்.
17Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day;
17உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ள விடாதே; நீ நாடோறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு.
18for surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
18நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு; உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.
19Thou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.
19என் மகனே, நீ செவிகொடுத்து ஞானமடைந்து, உன் இருதயத்தை நல்வழியிலே நடத்து.
20Be not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.
20மதுபானப்பிரியரையும் மாம்சப்பெருந்தீனிக்காரரையும் சேராதே.
21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.
21குடியனும் போஜனப்பிரியனும் தரித்திரராவார்கள்; தூக்கம் கந்தைகளை உடுத்துவிக்கும்.
22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
22உன்னைப் பெற்ற தகப்பனுக்குச் செவிகொடு; உன் தாய் வயதுசென்றவளாகும்போது அவளை அசட்டைபண்ணாதே.
23Buy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.
23சத்தியத்தை வாங்கு, அதை விற்காதே; அப்படியே ஞானத்தையும் உபதேசத்தையும் புத்தியையும் வாங்கு.
24The father of a righteous [man] shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise [son] shall have joy of him:
24நீதிமானுடைய தகப்பன் மிகவும் களிகூருவான்; ஞானமுள்ள பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றவன் அவனால் மகிழுவான்.
25let thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
25உன் தகப்பனும் உன் தாயும் சந்தோஷப்படுவார்கள்; உன்னைப் பெற்றவள் மகிழுவாள்.
26My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
26என் மகனே, உன் இருதயத்தை எனக்குத் தா; உன் கண்கள் என் வழிகளை நோக்குவதாக.
27For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
27வேசி ஆழமான படுகுழி; பரஸ்திரீ இடுக்கமான கிணறு.
28She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.
28அவள் கொள்ளைக்காரனைப்போல் பதிவிருந்து, மனுஷருக்குள்ளே பாதகரைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுகிறாள்.
29Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?
29ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை? யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?
30-- They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
30மதுபானம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே தங்கித் தரிப்பவர்களுக்கும், கலப்புள்ள சாராயத்தை நாடுகிறவர்களுக்குந்தானே.
31Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:
31மதுபானம் இரத்தவருணமாயிருந்து, பாத்திரத்தில் பளபளப்பாய்த் தோன்றும்போது, நீ அதைப் பாராதே; அது மெதுவாய் இறங்கும்.
32at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
32முடிவிலே அது பாம்பைப்போல் கடிக்கும், விரியனைப்போல் தீண்டும்.
33Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;
33உன் கண்கள் பரஸ்திரீகளை நோக்கும்; உன் உள்ளம் தாறுமாறானவைகளைப் பேசும்.
34and thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:
34நீ நடுக்கடலிலே சயனித்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும், பாய்மரத்தட்டிலே படுத்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும் இருப்பாய்.
35-- ''They have smitten me, [and] I am not sore; they have beaten me, [and] I knew it not. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.''
35என்னை அடித்தார்கள், எனக்கு நோகவில்லை; என்னை அறைந்தார்கள், எனக்குச் சுரணையில்லை; நான் அதைப் பின்னும் தொடர்ந்து தேட எப்பொழுது விழிப்பேன் என்பாய்.
