¹And Samuel said to Saul, Jehovah sent *me* to anoint thee king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah.

²Tiel diris la Eternulo Cebaot:Mi rememoris, kion faris Amalek al Izrael, kiel li baris la vojon al li, kiam cxi tiu iris el Egiptujo.

²Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I have considered what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

³Nun iru kaj frapu Amalekon, kaj ekstermu cxion, kion li havas; ne indulgu lin, sed mortigu la virojn kaj virinojn, infanojn kaj sucxinfanojn, bovojn kaj sxafojn, kamelojn kaj azenojn.

³Now go and smite Amalek, and destroy utterly all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

⁴Tiam Saul faris alvokon al la popolo, kaj li kalkulis ilin en Telaim, tie estis ducent mil piedirantoj kaj dek mil viroj el Jehuda.

⁴And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

⁵Kaj Saul venis al la urbo de Amalek kaj faris batalon cxe la torento.

⁵And Saul came to the city of the Amalekites, and set an ambush in the valley.

⁶Kaj Saul diris al la Kenidoj:Iru, deturnu vin kaj forigxu el inter la Amalekidoj, por ke mi ne ekstermu vin kune kun ili; vi faris ja favorkorajxon al cxiuj Izraelidoj, kiam ili iris el Egiptujo. Kaj la Kenidoj foriris el inter la Amalekidoj.

⁶And Saul said to the Kenites, Go, depart, and go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt. And the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

⁷Kaj Saul venkobatis Amalekon de HXavila gxis SXur, kiu estas antaux Egiptujo.

⁷And Saul smote Amalek from Havilah as thou comest to Shur, which is opposite to Egypt.

⁸Kaj li kaptis Agagon, regxon de Amalek, vivantan, sed la tutan popolon li ekstermis per glavo.

⁸And he took Agag the king of Amalek alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

⁹Kaj Saul kaj la popolo indulgis Agagon kaj la plej bonajn sxafojn kaj bovojn kaj bovidojn kaj sxafidojn, kaj cxion, kio estis bona, kaj ili ne volis ekstermi ilin, sed cxion senvaloran kaj neakceptindan ili ekstermis.

⁹And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and oxen, and beasts of the second bearing, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not devote them to destruction; but everything that was mean and weak, that they destroyed utterly.

¹⁰Tiam la Eternulo ekparolis al Samuel, dirante:

¹⁰And the word of Jehovah came to Samuel, saying,

¹¹Mi bedauxras, ke Mi faris Saulon regxo; cxar li deturnis sin de Mi, kaj Miajn vortojn li ne plenumis. Tio malgxojigis Samuelon, kaj li vokis al la Eternulo dum la tuta nokto.

¹¹It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned away from following me, and hath not fulfilled my words. And Samuel was much grieved; and he cried to Jehovah all night.

¹²Kaj Samuel levigxis frue matene, por iri renkonte al Saul. Oni raportis al Samuel, ke Saul venis al Karmel, ke li tie starigis al si monumenton kaj poste turnis sin kaj foriris kaj venis en Gilgalon.

¹²And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set him up a monument, and has turned about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

¹³Kiam Samuel venis al Saul, Saul diris al li:Estu benita de la Eternulo; mi plenumis la diron de la Eternulo.

¹³And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, Blessed art thou of Jehovah: I have fulfilled the word of Jehovah.

¹⁴Sed Samuel diris:Kion do signifas tiu vocxo de sxafoj en miaj oreloj, kaj la vocxo de bovoj, kiun mi auxdas?

¹⁴And Samuel said, What [means] then this bleating of sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of oxen which I hear?

¹⁵Kaj Saul respondis:De la Amalekidoj oni venigis ilin, cxar la popolo indulgis la plej bonajn sxafojn kaj bovojn, por bucxoferi ilin al la Eternulo, via Dio; la ceterajn ni ekstermis.

¹⁵And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites, because the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

¹⁶Sed Samuel diris al Saul:Permesu, mi diros al vi, kion parolis al mi la Eternulo en cxi tiu nokto. Kaj tiu respondis al li:Diru.

¹⁶And Samuel said to Saul, Stay, that I may tell thee what Jehovah has said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on.

¹⁷Kaj Samuel diris:CXu vi ne estis malgranda en viaj okuloj, kaj tamen vi farigxis estro de la triboj de Izrael, kaj la Eternulo sanktoleis vin regxo super Izrael?

¹⁷And Samuel said, Was it not when thou wast little in thine eyes that thou [becamest] the head of the tribes of Israel, and Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel?

¹⁸Kaj la Eternulo vojirigis vin, kaj diris:Iru kaj ekstermu la pekulojn la Amalekidojn, kaj militu kontraux ili, gxis vi tute ekstermos ilin.

¹⁸And Jehovah sent thee on a way and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

¹⁹Kial do vi ne obeis la vocxon de la Eternulo, sed direktigxis al militakirajxo kaj faris la malbonon antaux la okuloj de la Eternulo?

¹⁹Why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of Jehovah, but didst fall upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of Jehovah?

²⁰Kaj Saul diris al Samuel:Mi obeis la vocxon de la Eternulo, kaj mi iris la vojon, sur kiun sendis min la Eternulo, kaj mi venigis Agagon, regxon de Amalek, kaj la Amalekidojn mi ekstermis.

²⁰And Saul said to Samuel, I have indeed hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

²¹Kaj la popolo prenis el la militakirajxo sxafojn kaj bovojn, la plej bonan el la kondamnitajxo, por bucxoferi al la Eternulo, via Dio, en Gilgal.

²¹But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.

²²Sed Samuel diris:CXu bruloferoj kaj bucxoferoj estas tiel agrablaj al la Eternulo, kiel la obeado al la vocxo de la Eternulo? vidu, obeado estas pli bona ol bucxofero, atentado estas pli bona ol la sebo de sxafoj.

²²And Samuel said, Has Jehovah delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, As in hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, Attention than the fat of rams.

²³CXar malobeo estas kiel peko de sorcxado, kaj neplenumo estas kiel peko de idolservado. Pro tio, ke vi malsxatis la diron de la Eternulo, Li malsxatis vin, ke vi ne estu plu regxo.

²³For rebellion is [as] the sin of divination, And selfwill is [as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He hath also rejected thee from being king.

²⁴Tiam Saul diris al Samuel:Mi pekis, cxar mi malobeis la diron de la Eternulo kaj viajn vortojn; mi timis la popolon, kaj mi obeis gxian vocxon.

²⁴And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy words; for I feared the people, and hearkened to their voice.

²⁵Kaj nun pardonu, mi petas, mian pekon, kaj iru kun mi returne, por ke mi adorklinigxu antaux la Eternulo.

²⁵And now, I pray thee, forgive my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.

²⁶Sed Samuel diris al Saul:Mi ne iros kun vi returne; cxar vi malsxatis la diron de la Eternulo, tial la Eternulo malsxatis vin, ke vi ne estu plu regxo super Izrael.

²⁶And Samuel said to Saul, I will not turn again with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah has rejected thee from being king over Israel.

²⁷Kaj kiam Samuel deturnis sin por iri, li kaptis lin je la rando de lia vesto, kaj gxi dissxirigxis.

²⁷And as Samuel turned to go away, [Saul] laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

²⁸Tiam Samuel diris al li:La Eternulo forsxiris de vi hodiaux la regnon de Izrael, kaj transdonis gxin al via proksimulo, kiu estas pli bona ol vi.

²⁸Then Samuel said to him, Jehovah has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and has given it to thy neighbour, who is better than thou.

²⁹Kaj la Potenculo de Izrael ne sxangxos Sian decidon kaj ne pentos; cxar Li ne estas homo, ke Li pentu.

²⁹And also the Hope of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.

³⁰Kaj tiu diris:Mi pekis; sed nun, mi vin petas, faru al mi honoron antaux la plejagxuloj de mia popolo kaj antaux Izrael, reiru kun mi, por ke mi adorklinigxu antaux la Eternulo, via Dio.

³⁰And he said, I have sinned; honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy God.

³¹Tiam Samuel reiris post Saul, kaj Saul adorklinigxis antaux la Eternulo.

³¹So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.

³²Kaj Samuel diris:Alkonduku al mi Agagon, regxon de Amalek; kaj venis al li Agag en katenoj, kaj Agag diris:Ho, alproksimigxas la maldolcxeco de la morto.

³²And Samuel said, Bring ye near to me Agag the king of Amalek. And Agag came to him gaily. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

³³Kaj Samuel diris:Kiel via glavo seninfanigis virinojn, via patrino farigxos seninfana inter la virinoj. Kaj Samuel dishakis Agagon antaux la Eternulo en Gilgal.

³³And Samuel said, As thy sword has made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless above women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

³⁴Kaj Samuel foriris en la direkto al Rama, kaj Saul iris al sia domo en Gibea de Saul.

³⁴And Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

³⁵Kaj Samuel ne plu vidis Saulon gxis la tago de sia morto; tamen Samuel funebris pri Saul; kaj la Eternulo bedauxris, ke Li faris Saulon regxo super Izrael.

³⁵And Samuel saw Saul no more until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned over Saul; and Jehovah repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
