¹And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

²Kiam tion auxdis Jerobeam, filo de Nebat (cxar li estis en Egiptujo, kien li forkuris de la regxo Salomono), Jerobeam revenis el Egiptujo.

²And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (now he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon) that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

³Kaj oni sendis, kaj vokis lin. Tiam venis Jerobeam kaj la tuta Izrael, kaj ili ekparolis al Rehxabeam, dirante:

³And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam saying,

⁴Via patro tro pezigis nian jugon; nun deprenu iom de la malfacilaj laboroj de via patro, kaj de lia peza jugo, kiun li metis sur nin, kaj tiam ni servados al vi.

⁴Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

⁵Kaj li diris al ili:Post tri tagoj revenu al mi. Kaj la popolo disiris.

⁵And he said to them, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.

⁶Kaj la regxo Rehxabeam konsiligxis kun la maljunuloj, kiuj staradis antaux lia patro Salomono dum lia vivo, kaj li diris:Kiel vi konsilas respondi al cxi tiu popolo?

⁶And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?

⁷Kaj ili diris al li jene:Se vi estos bona al cxi tiu popolo kaj montros al ili favoron kaj parolos al ili bonajn vortojn, ili estos al vi servantoj por cxiam.

⁷And they spoke to him saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.

⁸Sed li ne atentis la konsilon de la maljunuloj, kiun ili donis al li; kaj li konsiligxis kun la junuloj, kiuj elkreskis kune kun li kaj staris antaux li.

⁸But he forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men, who had grown up with him, that stood before him.

⁹Kaj li diris al ili:Kion vi konsilas, ke ni respondu al cxi tiu popolo, kiu diris al mi jene:Faru malpli peza la jugon, kiun via patro metis sur nin?

⁹And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me saying, Lighten the yoke which thy father put upon us?

¹⁰Kaj la junuloj, kiuj elkreskis kune kun li, parolis al li, dirante:Tiele diru al la popolo, kiu diris al vi:Via patro faris nian jugon tro peza, kaj vi faru gxin malpli peza-tiele diru al ili:Mia malgranda fingro estas pli dika, ol la lumboj de mia patro;

¹⁰And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him saying, Thus shalt thou say to the people who have spoken to thee saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and lighten thou it for us, -- thus shalt thou say to them: My little [finger] is thicker than my father's loins;

¹¹tial se mia patro sxargxis vin per peza jugo, mi ankoraux pli pezigos vian jugon; mia patro vin punadis per vipoj, sed mi vin punados per skorpioj.

¹¹and whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, *I* will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but *I* [will chastise you] with scorpions.

¹²Kaj Jerobeam kaj la tuta popolo venis al Rehxabeam en la tria tago, kiel la regxo ordonis, dirante:Revenu al mi en la tria tago.

¹²And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed saying, Come again to me on the third day.

¹³Kaj la regxo respondis al ili malafable; kaj la regxo Rehxabeam ne atentis la konsilon de la maljunuloj;

¹³And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the advice of the old men,

¹⁴kaj li parolis al ili laux la konsilo de la junuloj, dirante:Mia patro pezigis vian jugon, sed mi gxin ankoraux pli pezigos; mia patro vin punadis per vipoj, sed mi vin punados per skorpioj.

¹⁴and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but *I* will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but *I* [will chastise you] with scorpions.

¹⁵Kaj la regxo ne auxskultis la popolon; cxar estis tiel destinite de Dio, por ke la Eternulo plenumu Sian vorton, kiun Li diris per Ahxija, la SXiloano, al Jerobeam, filo de Nebat.

¹⁵So the king hearkened not to the people; for it was brought about by God, that Jehovah might give effect to his word, which he spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹⁶Kiam cxiuj Izraelidoj vidis, ke la regxo ilin ne obeas, tiam la popolo respondis al la regxo, dirante:Kian parton ni havas en David? ni ne havas heredajxon en la filo de Jisxaj; iru, ho Izraelidoj, cxiu al sia tendo! nun zorgu mem pri via domo, ho David! Kaj cxiuj Izraelidoj disiris al siaj tendoj.

¹⁶And all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them; and the people answered the king saying, What portion have we in David? and [we have] no inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel. Now see to thine own house, David! And all Israel went to their tents.

¹⁷Sed super la Izraelidoj, kiuj logxis en la urboj de Judujo, regis Rehxabeam.

¹⁷But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

¹⁸Kaj la regxo Rehxabeam sendis Hadoramon, la estron super la impostoj; sed la Izraelidoj jxetis sur lin sxtonojn, kaj li mortis. Kaj la regxo Rehxabeam rapide sidigxis en cxaro, por forkuri en Jerusalemon.

¹⁸And king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. And king Rehoboam hastened to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

¹⁹Tiamaniere Izrael defalis de la domo de David gxis la nuna tago.

¹⁹And Israel rebelled against the house of David, unto this day.
