¹Kiam Jakob sciigxis, ke oni vendas grenon en Egiptujo, li diris al siaj filoj: Kion vi rigardas?

¹And Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

²Kaj li diris: Mi auxdis, ke oni vendas grenon en Egiptujo; veturu do tien kaj acxetu por ni tie grenon, por ke ni vivu kaj ne mortu.

²And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down thither and buy [grain] for us from thence, in order that we may live, and not die.

³Kaj forveturis dek fratoj de Jozef, por acxeti grenon en Egiptujo.

³And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy [grain] out of Egypt.

⁴Sed Benjamenon, la fraton de Jozef, Jakob ne sendis kun liaj fratoj; cxar li timis, ke eble lin trafos malfelicxo.

⁴But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest mischief may befall him.

⁵Kaj la filoj de Izrael venis, por acxeti grenon, kune kun aliaj venintoj; cxar estis malsato en la lando Kanaana.

⁵So the sons of Israel came to buy [grain] among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

⁶Kaj Jozef estis la estro super la lando, kaj li estis la vendanto de la greno por la tuta popolo de la lando. Kaj la fratoj de Jozef venis kaj klinigxis al li vizagxaltere.

⁶And Joseph, he was the governor over the land -- he it was that sold [the corn] to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came and bowed down to him, the face to the earth.

⁷And Joseph saw his brethren, and knew them; but he made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them, and said to them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.

⁸And Joseph knew his brethren, but they did not know him.

⁹Kaj Jozef rememoris la songxojn, kiujn li songxis pri ili. Kaj li diris al ili: Vi estas spionoj: vi venis, por vidi la malfortajn lokojn de la lando.

⁹And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamt of them; and he said to them, Ye are spies: to see the exposed places of the land ye are come.

¹⁰Kaj ili diris al li: Ne, mia sinjoro! viaj sklavoj venis, por acxeti mangxajxon.

¹⁰And they said to him, No, my lord; but to buy food are thy servants come.

¹¹Ni cxiuj estas filoj de unu homo; ni estas honestaj; viaj sklavoj neniam estis spionoj.

¹¹We are all one man's sons; we are honest: thy servants are not spies.

¹²Sed li diris al ili: Ne, vi venis, por vidi la malfortajn lokojn de la lando.

¹²And he said to them, No; but to see the exposed places of the land are ye come.

¹³Ili diris: Ni, viaj sklavoj, estas dek du fratoj, filoj de unu homo en la lando Kanaana; la plej juna estas nun kun nia patro, kaj unu malaperis.

¹³And they said, Thy servants were twelve brethren, sons of one man, in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

¹⁴Kaj Jozef diris al ili: Estas tio, kion mi diris al vi, vi estas spionoj.

¹⁴And Joseph said to them, That is it that I have spoken to you, saying, Ye are spies.

¹⁵Per tio mi vin elprovos: mi jxuras per la vivo de Faraono, ke vi foriros el cxi tie nur tiam, kiam venos cxi tien via plej juna frato.

¹⁵By this ye shall be put to the proof: as Pharaoh lives, ye shall not go forth hence, unless your youngest brother come hither!

¹⁶Sendu unu el vi, ke li alkonduku vian fraton; sed vi estos malliberigitaj, kaj oni esploros viajn vortojn, cxu vi diris la veron; se ne, tiam mi jxuras per la vivo de Faraono, ke vi estas spionoj.

¹⁶Send one of you, that he may fetch your brother, but ye shall be imprisoned, and your words shall be put to the proof, whether the truth is in you; and if not, as Pharaoh lives, ye are spies.

¹⁷Kaj li metis ilin sub gardon por la dauxro de tri tagoj.

¹⁷And he put them in custody three days.

¹⁸Kaj Jozef diris al ili en la tria tago: Tion faru, kaj vi restos vivaj, cxar mi havas timon antaux Dio.

¹⁸And Joseph said to them the third day, This do, that ye may live: I fear God.

¹⁹Se vi estas homoj honestaj, tiam unu el viaj fratoj restu malliberigita en la domo, en kiu oni vin gardas, kaj vi iru kaj forportu hejmen la grenon, kiun vi acxetis kontraux la malsato.

¹⁹If ye are honest, let one of your brethren remain bound in the house of your prison, but go ye, carry grain for the hunger of your households;

²⁰Sed vian plej junan fraton venigu al mi, por ke pruvigxu la vereco de viaj vortoj kaj por ke vi ne mortu. Kaj ili faris tiel.

²⁰and bring your youngest brother to me, in order that your words be verified, and that ye may not die. And they did so.

²¹Kaj ili diris unu al alia: Vere ni estas kulpaj pro nia frato; cxar ni vidis la suferadon de lia animo, kiam li petegis nin, sed ni ne auxskultis; por tio venis sur nin cxi tiu sufero.

²¹Then they said one to another, We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, whose anguish of soul we saw when he besought us, and we did not hearken; therefore this distress is come upon us.

²²Kaj Ruben respondis al ili, dirante: Mi diris ja al vi: Ne peku rilate la infanon; sed vi ne obeis; nun lia sango estas repostulata.

²²And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not sin against the lad? But ye did not hearken; and now behold, his blood also is required.

²³Kaj ili ne sciis, ke Jozef komprenas; cxar inter ili estis tradukanto.

²³And they did not know that Joseph understood, for the interpreter was between them.

²⁴Kaj li deturnis sin de ili kaj ekploris; poste li denove returnis sin al ili kaj parolis kun ili, kaj li prenis el inter ili Simeonon kaj ligis lin antaux iliaj okuloj.

²⁴And he turned away from them, and wept. And he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

²⁵Kaj Jozef ordonis plenigi iliajn sakojn per greno kaj redoni ilian monon al cxiu en lian sakon kaj doni al ili mangxajxon por la vojo. Tiel oni faris al ili.

²⁵And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And thus did they to them.

²⁶And they loaded their asses with their grain, and departed thence.

²⁷And one of them opened his sack to give his ass food in the inn, and saw his money, and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

²⁸Kaj li diris al siaj fratoj: Mia mono estas redonita; jen gxi estas en mia sako. Tiam konsternigxis iliaj koroj, kaj kun tremo ili diris unuj al la aliaj: Kial Dio faris tion al ni?

²⁸And he said to his brethren, My money is returned [to me], and behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed [them], and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this [that] God has done to us?

²⁹Kiam ili venis al sia patro Jakob en la landon Kanaanan, ili rakontis al li cxion, kio okazis al ili, dirante:

²⁹And they came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

³⁰La homo, kiu estas sinjoro super tiu lando, parolis kun ni malafable, kaj diris, ke ni estas spionoj en la lando.

³⁰The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and treated us as spies of the land.

³¹Kaj ni diris al li: Ni estas homoj honestaj, ni neniam estis spionoj;

³¹And we said to him, We are honest; we are not spies:

³²ni estas dek du fratoj, filoj de nia patro; unu malaperis, kaj la plej juna estas nun kun nia patro en la lando Kanaana.

³²we are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

³³Tiam diris al ni la homo, kiu estas sinjoro super la lando: Per tio mi konvinkigxos, ke vi estas homoj honestaj: unu el viaj fratoj lasu cxe mi, kaj la necesan grenon por via hejmo prenu kaj iru;

³³And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Hereby shall I know that ye are honest: leave one of your brethren with me, and take [for] the hunger of your households, and go,

³⁴kaj venigu al mi vian plej junan fraton; tiam mi scios, ke vi ne estas spionoj, ke vi estas honestaj homoj; vian fraton mi redonos al vi, kaj vi povos negoci en la lando.

³⁴and bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that ye are not spies, but are honest. Your brother will I give up to you; and ye may trade in the land.

³⁵Kiam ili malplenigis siajn sakojn, montrigxis, ke cxiu el ili havas sian ligajxon da mono en sia sako. Kaj ili vidis siajn ligajxojn da mono, ili kaj ilia patro, kaj ili timigxis.

³⁵And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man had his bundle of money in his sack; and they saw their bundles of money, they and their father, and were afraid.

³⁶Kaj ilia patro Jakob diris al ili: Vi min seninfanigis; Jozef forestas, kaj Simeon forestas, kaj Benjamenon vi volas forpreni! sur min cxio falis!

³⁶And Jacob their father said to them, Ye have bereaved me of children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin! All these things are against me.

³⁷Tiam Ruben diris al sia patro jene: Miajn du filojn mortigu, se mi ne revenigos lin al vi; donu lin en mian manon, kaj mi revenigos lin al vi.

³⁷And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons if I bring him not back to thee: give him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

³⁸Sed li diris: Mia filo ne iros kun vi; cxar lia frato mortis, kaj li sola restis. Se lin trafos malfelicxo sur la vojo, kiun vi iros, tiam vi enirigos miajn grizajn harojn kun malgxojo en SXeolon.

³⁸But he said, My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; and if mischief should befall him by the way in which ye go, then would ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to Sheol.
