¹Estis iu homo en la lando Uc, lia nomo estis Ijob. Tiu homo estis honesta, justa, diotima, kaj li evitadis malbonon.

¹There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and this man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and abstained from evil.

²Al li naskigxis sep filoj kaj tri filinoj.

²And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³Lia brutaro konsistis el sep mil sxafoj, tri mil kameloj, kvincent paroj da bovoj, kvincent azeninoj, kaj li havis tre multe da servistoj; kaj tiu homo estis pli eminenta, ol cxiuj filoj de la oriento.

³And his substance was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; and this man was greater than all the children of the east.

⁴Liaj filoj havis la kutimon faradi festenon en la domo de cxiu el ili, cxiu en sia tago; kaj ili invitadis siajn tri fratinojn, por mangxi kaj trinki kun ili.

⁴And his sons went and made a feast in the house of each one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵Kaj cxiufoje, kiam la rondo de la festenaj tagoj estis finita, Ijob sendis, por sanktigi ilin, kaj li levigxis frue matene kaj alportis bruloferojn laux la nombro de ili cxiuj; cxar, diris Ijob:Eble miaj filoj pekis kaj blasfemis Dion en sia koro. Tiel agadis Ijob cxiam.

⁵And it was so, when the days of the feasting were gone about, that Job sent and hallowed them; and he rose up early in the morning, and offered up burnt-offerings [according to] the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁶Unu tagon, kiam la filoj de Dio venis, por starigxi antaux la Eternulo, venis inter ili ankaux Satano.

⁶And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah; and Satan came also among them.

⁷Kaj la Eternulo diris al Satano:De kie vi venas? Kaj Satano respondis al la Eternulo, kaj diris:Mi vagadis sur la tero kaj rondiradis sur gxi.

⁷And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁸Kaj la Eternulo diris al Satano:CXu vi atentis Mian servanton Ijob? ne ekzistas ja sur la tero homo simila al li, tiel honesta, justa, diotima, kaj evitanta malbonon.

⁸And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil?

⁹Kaj Satano respondis al la Eternulo, kaj diris:CXu vane Ijob timas Dion?

⁹And Satan answered Jehovah and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

¹⁰Vi sxirmis ja cxiuflanke lin kaj lian domon, kaj cxion, kio apartenas al li; la farojn de liaj manoj Vi benis, kaj liaj brutaroj disvastigxis sur la tero.

¹⁰Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is spread abroad in the land.

¹¹Sed etendu nur Vian manon, kaj ektusxu cxion, kion li havas; Vi vidos, cxu li ne blasfemos Vin antaux Via vizagxo.

¹¹But put forth thy hand now and touch all that he hath, [and see] if he will not curse thee to thy face!

¹²Tiam la Eternulo diris al Satano:Jen cxio, kion li havas, estas transdonata en vian manon; nur sur lin mem ne etendu vian manon. Kaj Satano foriris de antaux la Eternulo.

¹²And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

¹³Unu tagon, kiam liaj filoj kaj liaj filinoj estis mangxantaj kaj trinkantaj vinon en la domo de ilia unuenaskita frato,

¹³And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn.

¹⁴venis sendito al Ijob, kaj diris:Dum la bovoj estis plugantaj kaj la azeninoj estis pasxtigxantaj apud ili,

¹⁴And there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them;

¹⁵superfalis ilin la SXebaanoj, kaj forprenis ilin; kaj la servistojn ili mortigis per glavo; savigxis nur mi sola, por raporti al vi.

¹⁵and [they of] Sheba fell [upon them] and took them, and the servants have they smitten with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.

¹⁶Kiam ankoraux tiu parolis, venis alia, kaj diris:Fajro de Dio falis el la cxielo, bruligis la sxafojn kaj la servistojn, kaj ekstermis ilin; savigxis nur mi sola, por raporti al vi.

¹⁶While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.

¹⁷Kiam tiu ankoraux parolis, venis alia, kaj diris:La HXaldeoj arangxis tri tacxmentojn, atakis la kamelojn kaj forprenis ilin, kaj la servistojn ili mortigis per glavo; savigxis nur mi sola, por raporti al vi.

¹⁷While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels and took them, and the servants have they smitten with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.

¹⁸Dum tiu ankoraux parolis, venis alia, kaj diris:Viaj filoj kaj viaj filinoj estis mangxantaj kaj trinkantaj vinon en la domo de ilia unuenaskita frato;

¹⁸While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn;

¹⁹kaj jen granda vento levigxis de la flanko de la dezerto, pusxis la kvar angulojn de la domo, kaj cxi tiu falis sur la junulojn, kaj ili mortis; savigxis nur mi sola, por raporti al vi.

¹⁹and behold, there came a great wind from over the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.

²⁰Tiam Ijob levigxis, dissxiris sian veston, pritondis sian kapon, jxetis sin sur la teron, kaj adorklinigxis;

²⁰And Job rose up, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshipped;

²¹kaj li diris:Nuda mi eliris el la ventro de mia patrino, kaj nuda mi revenos tien; la Eternulo donis, kaj la Eternulo prenis; la nomo de la Eternulo estu benata.

²¹and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah!

²²Malgraux cxio cxi tio Ijob ne pekis, kaj ne eldiris blasfemon kontraux Dio.

²²In all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed anything unseemly to God.
