¹Kaj kiam auxdis cxiuj regxoj, kiuj logxis trans Jordan, sur la monto kaj en la valo, kaj sur la tuta bordo de la Granda Maro kontraux Lebanon, la HXetidoj, kaj la Amoridoj, la Kanaanidoj, la Perizidoj, la HXividoj, kaj la Jebusidoj,

¹And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the great sea as far as opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard [of it],

²ili kolektigxis kune, por militi unuanime kontraux Josuo kaj kontraux Izrael.

²that they assembled together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

³Kaj la logxantoj de Gibeon auxdis, kion faris Josuo al Jerihxo kaj al Aj,

³And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴kaj ili ankaux faris ruzajxon:ili iris kaj provizis sin per mangxajxoj, kaj metis malnovajn sakojn sur siajn azenojn kaj malnovajn dissxiritajn kaj flikitajn vinsakojn;

⁴then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up;

⁵kaj sxuoj malnovaj kaj flikitaj estis sur iliaj piedoj, kaj vestoj malnovaj estis sur ili, kaj ilia tuta pano estis malfresxa kaj sximigxinta.

⁵and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] mouldy.

⁶Kaj ili iris al Josuo en la tendaron cxe Gilgal, kaj diris al li kaj al la tuta Izrael:El lando malproksima ni venis; faru do kun ni interligon.

⁶And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us.

⁷Kaj la Izraelidoj diris al la HXividoj:Eble vi logxas apude de ni; kiel do ni povas fari kun vi interligon?

⁷And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee?

⁸Kaj ili diris al Josuo:Ni estas viaj sklavoj. Kaj Josuo diris al ili:Kiuj vi estas? kaj el kie vi venas?

⁸And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

⁹Kaj ili diris al li:El lando tre malproksima venis viaj sklavoj pro la nomo de la Eternulo, via Dio; cxar ni auxdis Lian gloron, kaj cxion, kion Li faris en Egiptujo,

⁹And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

¹⁰kaj cxion, kion Li faris al la du regxoj de la Amoridoj transe de Jordan, al Sihxon, regxo de HXesxbon, kaj al Og, regxo de Basxan, kiu logxis en Asxtarot.

¹⁰and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

¹¹Kaj diris al ni niaj plejagxuloj kaj cxiuj logxantoj de nia lando jene:Prenu en viajn manojn mangxajxon por la vojo, kaj iru renkonte al ili, kaj diru al ili:Ni estas viaj sklavoj; faru do kun ni interligon.

¹¹And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals in your hand for the way, and go to meet them, and say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us.

¹²CXi tiu nia pano estis varma, kiam ni prenis gxin provize el niaj domoj en la tago, en kiu ni eliris, por iri al vi; kaj nun jen gxi malfresxigxis kaj sximigxis.

¹²This our bread we took warm for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy.

¹³Kaj cxi tiuj niaj felsakoj kun vino, kiujn ni plenigis novajn, jen ili disfendigxis; kaj cxi tiuj niaj vestoj kaj sxuoj malnovigxis pro la tre longa vojo.

¹³And these flasks of wine which we filled new, behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our sandals are become old by reason of the very long journey.

¹⁴Tiam la homoj prenis iom el ilia pano, kaj la Eternulon ili ne demandis.

¹⁴And the men took of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouth of Jehovah.

¹⁵Kaj Josuo faris pacon kun ili, kaj starigis interligon kun ili, por lasi ilin vivaj; kaj la cxefoj de la komunumo jxuris al ili.

¹⁵And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the assembly swore unto them.

¹⁶Sed post paso de tri tagoj, post kiam ili faris kun ili interligon, ili ekauxdis, ke ili estas iliaj najbaroj kaj logxas apude de ili.

¹⁶And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt in their midst.

¹⁷Kaj la Izraelidoj elmovigxis, kaj venis al iliaj urboj en la tria tago; iliaj urboj estis Gibeon kaj Kefira kaj Beerot kaj Kirjat-Jearim.

¹⁷And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

¹⁸Kaj la Izraelidoj ne batis ilin, cxar la estroj de la komunumo jxuris al ili per la Eternulo, Dio de Izrael. Kaj la tuta komunumo ekmurmuris kontraux la estroj.

¹⁸And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel. Then all the assembly murmured against the princes.

¹⁹Kaj cxiuj estroj diris al la tuta komunumo:Ni jxuris al ili per la Eternulo, Dio de Izrael, kaj nun ni ne povas tusxi ilin;

¹⁹And all the princes said to all the assembly, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.

²⁰tion ni faros al ili:ni lasu ilin vivaj, por ke ne trafu nin kolero pro la jxuro, kiun ni jxuris al ili.

²⁰This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath come upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.

²¹Kaj la estroj diris al ili:Ili vivu. Kaj ili farigxis lignohakistoj kaj akvoportistoj por la tuta komunumo, kiel diris al ili la estroj.

²¹And the princes said to them, Let them live. And they were hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly; as the princes had said to them.

²²Kaj Josuo alvokis ilin, kaj diris al ili jene:Kial vi nin trompis, dirante, ke vi estas tre malproksimaj de ni, dum vi logxas apude de ni?

²²And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; whereas ye dwell in our midst?

²³estu do nun malbenitaj:ne cxesigxu inter vi sklavoj kaj lignohakistoj kaj akvoportistoj por la domo de mia Dio.

²³And now ye are cursed, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.

²⁴Kaj ili respondis al Josuo kaj diris:Estis dirite al viaj sklavoj, ke la Eternulo, via Dio, promesis al Sia servanto Moseo, ke Li donos al vi la tutan landon kaj ekstermos antaux vi cxiujn logxantojn de la lando; tial ni tre ektimis antaux vi pri nia vivo, kaj ni faris tiun aferon.

²⁴And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.

²⁵Kaj nun jen ni estas en via mano:kiel vi trovas bona kaj justa agi kun ni, tiel agu.

²⁵And now behold, we are in thy hand: as it is good and right in thine eyes to do to us, do.

²⁶Kaj li agis kun ili tiel:li savis ilin kontraux la manoj de la Izraelidoj, kaj cxi tiuj ne mortigis ilin.

²⁶And he did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.

²⁷Sed Josuo destinis al ili en tiu tago, ke ili estu lignohakistoj kaj akvoportistoj por la komunumo kaj por la altaro de la Eternulo, gxis la nuna tago, sur la loko, kiun Li elektos.

²⁷And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Jehovah, to this day, in the place which he should choose.
