¹And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.

²And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

³And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

⁴Kaj la Eternulo diris al Moseo:Prenu cxiujn estrojn de la popolo kaj pendigu ilin al la Eternulo kontraux la suno, kaj deturnigxos de Izrael la furiozo de la kolero de la Eternulo.

⁴And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

⁵Kaj Moseo diris al la jugxistoj de Izrael:Mortigu cxiu siajn homojn, kiuj aligxis al Baal-Peor.

⁵And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

⁶Kaj jen iu el la Izraelidoj venis kaj alkondukis al siaj fratoj Midjanidinon antaux la okuloj de Moseo kaj antaux la okuloj de la tuta komunumo de Izrael, dum ili ploris cxe la pordo de la tabernaklo de kunveno.

⁶And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.

⁷Kiam tion vidis Pinehxas, filo de Eleazar, la filo de la pastro Aaron, li levigxis el inter la komunumo kaj prenis ponardegon en sian manon.

⁷And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,

⁸Kaj li iris post la Izraelido en la dormejon, kaj trapikis ilin ambaux, la Izraelidon kaj la virinon tra sxia ventro; kaj tiam cxesigxis la punfrapado de la Izraelidoj.

⁸and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

⁹Kaj la nombro de la mortintoj per la punfrapado estis dudek kvar mil.

⁹And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹⁰Kaj la Eternulo ekparolis al Moseo, dirante:

¹⁰And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

¹¹Pinehxas, filo de Eleazar, la filo de la pastro Aaron, deturnis Mian koleregon de la Izraelidoj, cxar li fervoris pri Mi inter ili, kaj Mi ne ekstermis la Izraelidojn en Mia severeco.

¹¹Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

¹²Tial diru:Jen Mi donas al li Mian interligon pri paco;

¹²Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!

¹³kaj gxi estu por li kaj por lia idaro post li interligo de eterna pastreco, pro tio, ke li fervoris pri sia Dio kaj pekliberigis la Izraelidojn.

¹³And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

¹⁴La nomo de la mortigita Izraelido, kiu estis mortigita kune kun la Midjanidino, estis Zimri, filo de Salu, cxefo de patrodomo el la Simeonidoj;

¹⁴And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.

¹⁵kaj la nomo de la mortigita Midjanidino estis Kozbi, filino de Cur, estro de la anoj de patrodomo en Midjan.

¹⁵And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

¹⁶Kaj la Eternulo ekparolis al Moseo, dirante:

¹⁶And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

¹⁷Estu malamikoj al la Midjanidoj kaj batu ilin;

¹⁷Harass the Midianites, and smite them,

¹⁸cxar ili estas malamikoj al vi per sia insido, kiun ili faris al vi per Peor, kaj per Kozbi, la filino de la Midjana estro, ilia fratino mortigita en la tago de la punfrapado pro Peor.

¹⁸for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
