1Vaadake, kui suure armastuse Isa on meile andnud: meid hüütakse Jumala lasteks ja need me olemegi. Maailm ei tunne meid, sest ta ei tunne teda.
1See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called [the] children of God. For this reason the world knows us not, because it knew him not.
2Armsad, me oleme nüüd Jumala lapsed, ja veel ei ole saanud avalikuks, kes me ükskord oleme. Me teame, et kui tema saab avalikuks, siis me oleme tema sarnased, sest siis me näeme teda, nii nagu ta on.
2Beloved, now are we children of God, and what we shall be has not yet been manifested; we know that if it is manifested we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
3Igaüks, kellel on selline lootus tema peale, puhastab ennast, just nagu tema on puhas.
3And every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as *he* is pure.
4Igaüks, kes teeb pattu, rikub ka seadust, ning patt on seaduserikkumine.
4Every one that practises sin practises also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
5Te teate, et tema on ilmunud patte ära kandma ning temas endas ei ole pattu.
5And ye know that *he* has been manifested that he might take away our sins; and in him sin is not.
6Ükski, kes püsib temas, ei tee pattu; ükski, kes teeb pattu, ei ole näinud ega mõistnud teda.
6Whoever abides in him, does not sin: whoever sins, has not seen him or known him.
7Lapsed, ärgu keegi eksitagu teid! Kes teeb õigust, on õige, nii nagu tema on õige.
7Children, let no man lead you astray; he that practises righteousness is righteous, even as *he* is righteous.
8Kes teeb pattu, on kuradist, sest kurat teeb pattu algusest peale. Selleks ongi Jumala Poeg saanud avalikuks, et ta tühistaks kuradi teod.
8He that practises sin is of the devil; for from [the] beginning the devil sins. To this end the Son of God has been manifested, that he might undo the works of the devil.
9Ükski, kes on sündinud Jumalast, ei tee pattu, sest Jumala seeme püsib temas ja ta ei saa teha pattu, sest ta on sündinud Jumalast.
9Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.
10Sellest on näha, kes on Jumala lapsed ja kes kuradi lapsed: ükski, kes ei tee õigust, ei ole Jumalast, nagu ka mitte see, kes ei armasta oma venda.
10In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the devil. Whoever does not practise righteousness is not of God, and he who does not love his brother.
11Jah, see ongi sõnum, mida te olete kuulnud algusest peale, et me peame üksteist armastama.
11For this is the message which ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another:
12Mitte nii nagu Kain, kes oli kurjast ja lõi maha oma venna. Ja mispärast ta lõi tema maha? Sellepärast, et tema teod olid kurjad, aga ta venna omad õiged.
12not as Cain was of the wicked one, and slew his brother; and on account of what slew he him? because his works were wicked, and those of his brother righteous.
13Ärge imestage, vennad, kui maailm teid vihkab.
13Do not wonder, brethren, if the world hate you.
14Me teame, et oleme tulnud surmast ellu, sest me armastame vendi. Kes ei armasta, see jääb surma.
14*We* know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [his] brother abides in death.
15Igaüks, kes vihkab oma venda, on mõrvar, ja te teate, et ühelgi mõrvaril ei ole igavest elu, mis temasse jääks.
15Every one that hates his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16Armastuse me oleme ära tundnud sellest, et Kristus on jätnud oma elu meie eest; ning meie oleme kohustatud jätma oma elu vendade eest.
16Hereby we have known love, because *he* has laid down his life for us; and *we* ought for the brethren to lay down [our] lives.
17Kui nüüd kellelgi on selle maailma vara ja ta näeb oma venna olevat puuduses, ent lukustab oma südame tema eest - kuidas saab Jumala armastus jääda temasse?
17But whoso may have the world's substance, and see his brother having need, and shut up his bowels from him, how abides the love of God in him?
18Lapsed, ärgem armastagem sõnaga ja keelega, vaid teoga ja tõega!
18Children, let us not love with word, nor with tongue, but in deed and in truth.
19Sellest me tunneme, et oleme pärit tõest. Ja me võime kinnitada tema ees oma südant,
19And hereby we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before him --
20et olgu mis tahes, milles meie süda meid süüdistab, Jumal on siiski meie südamest suurem ja tema teab kõik.
20that if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
21Armsad, kui meie süda ei süüdista, siis on meil julgus Jumala ees
21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness towards God,
22ja mida me iganes palume, seda me saame temalt, sest me peame tema käske ja teeme, mis on tema silmis meelepärane.
22and whatsoever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and practise the things which are pleasing in his sight.
23Ja see on tema käsk, et me usuksime tema Poja Jeesuse Kristuse nimesse ja armastaksime üksteist, nii nagu tema meile on käsu andnud.
23And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, even as he has given us commandment.
24Ja kes peab tema käske, püsib Jumalas ja Jumal temas. Ja sellest me tunneme ära, et tema püsib meis - Vaimust, kelle ta meile on andnud.
24And he that keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given to us.
