1[] Λογοι του Εκκλησιαστου, υιου του Δαβιδ, βασιλεως εν Ιερουσαλημ.
1The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2Ματαιοτης ματαιοτητων, ειπεν ο Εκκλησιαστης· ματαιοτης ματαιοτητων, τα παντα ματαιοτης.
2Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.
3Τις ωφελεια εις τον ανθρωπον εκ παντος του μοχθου αυτου, τον οποιον μοχθει υπο τον ηλιον;
3What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?
4[] Γενεα υπαγει, και γενεα ερχεται· η δε γη διαμενει εις τον αιωνα.
4[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.
5Και ανατελλει ο ηλιος, και δυει ο ηλιος· και σπευδει προς τον τοπον αυτου, οθεν ανετειλεν.
5The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.
6Υπαγει προς τον νοτον ο ανεμος, και επιστρεφει προς τον βορραν· ακαταπαυστως περιστρεφομενος υπαγει, και επανερχεται επι τους κυκλους αυτου, ο ανεμος.
6The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.
7Παντες οι ποταμοι υπαγουσιν εις την θαλασσαν, και η θαλασσα ποτε δεν γεμιζει· εις τον τοπον οθεν ρεουσιν οι ποταμοι, εκει παλιν επιστρεφουσι, δια να υπαγωσι.
7All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.
8Παντα τα πραγματα ειναι εν κοπω· δεν δυναται ανθρωπος να εκφραση τουτο· ο οφθαλμος δεν χορταινει βλεπων, και το ωτιον δεν γεμιζει ακουον.
8All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9[] Ο, τι εγεινε, τουτο παλιν θελει γεινει· και ο, τι συνεβη, τουτο παλιν θελει συμβη· και δεν ειναι ουδεν νεον υπο τον ηλιον.
9That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.
10Υπαρχει πραγμα, περι του οποιου δυναται τις να ειπη, Ιδε, τουτο ειναι νεον; τουτο εγεινεν ηδη εις τους αιωνας οιτινες υπηρξαν προ ημων.
10Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.
11Δεν ειναι μνημη των προγεγονοτων, ουδε θελει εισθαι μνημη των επιγενησομενων μετα ταυτα, εις τους μελλοντας να υπαρξωσιν επειτα.
11There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.
12[] Εγω ο Εκκλησιαστης εσταθην βασιλευς επι τον Ισραηλ εν Ιερουσαλημ·
12I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13και εδωκα την καρδιαν μου εις το να εκζητησω και να ερευνησω δια της σοφιας περι παντων των γινομενων υπο τον ουρανον· τον οχληρον τουτον περισπασμον ο Θεος εδωκεν εις τους υιους των ανθρωπων, δια να μοχθωσιν εν αυτω.
13And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.
14Ειδον παντα τα εργα τα γινομενα υπο τον ηλιον, και ιδου, τα παντα ματαιοτης και θλιψις πνευματος.
14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.
15Το στρεβλον δεν δυναται να γεινη ευθες, και αι ελλειψεις δεν δυνανται να αριθμηθωσιν.
15That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16Εγω ελαλησα εν τη καρδια μου λεγων, Ιδου, εγω εμεγαλυνθην και ηυξηνθην εις σοφιαν υπερ παντας τους υπαρξαντας προ εμου εν Ιερουσαλημ, και η καρδια μου απηλαυσε πολλην σοφιαν και γνωσιν.
16I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.
17Και εδωκα την καρδιαν μου εις το να γνωριση σοφιαν και εις το να γνωριση ανοησιαν και αφροσυνην· πλην εγνωρισα οτι και τουτο ειναι θλιψις πνευματος.
17And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.
18Διοτι εν πολλη σοφια ειναι πολλη λυπη· και οστις προσθετει γνωσιν, προσθετει πονον.
18For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
