¹આ સમય દરમ્યાન કૈસર ઓગસ્તસે હુકમનામું બહાર પાડ્યું કે જે દેશો રોમન શાસન હેઠળ છે તે સમગ્ર રાજ્યની વસતી ગણતરી કરવામાં આવે. એ હુકમનામા અનુસાર બધાજ લોકોએ પોતપોતાના નામ રજિસ્ટરમાં નોધાવવાનાં હતા.

¹Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.

²આ વસ્તી ગણતરી પ્રથમ વાર જ થતી હતી. તે વખતે સિરિયા પ્રાંતનો હાકેમ કુરીનિયસ હતો.

²This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

³તેથી બધાજ લોકો પોતપોતાના શહેરમાં નામની નોંધણી કરાવવા માટે ગયા.

³All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.

⁴અને યૂસફ પણ ગાલીલના નાસરેથ શહેરમાંથી યહૂદિયા મધ્યે દાઉદનું શહેર જે બેથલેહેમ કહેવાય છે તેમાં,

⁴Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;

⁵પોતાનું તથા પોતાની ગર્ભવતી વેવિશાળી પત્નિ મરિયમનું નામ નોંધાવવા ગયો કેમ કે દાઉદના વંશ તથા કુળમાંનો તે હતો.

⁵to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.

⁶તેઓ ત્યાં હતાં એટલામાં તેના દહાડા પૂરા થયા.

⁶It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.

⁷ત્યાં મરિયમે તેના પ્રથમ દિકરાને જન્મ આપવાનો સમય હતો તેણે પ્રથમ દીકરાને જન્મ આપ્યો. તે વખતે ધર્મશાળામાં કોઈ ઓરડો ખાલી ન હોવાથી તેણે ગભાણમાં જ બાળકને કપડાંમાં લપેટીને સુવાડ્યો.

⁷She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁸તે વખતે રાત્રે કેટલાક ભરવાડો ખેતરમાં તેમનાં ઘેટાંઓની રખેવાળી કરતા હતા.

⁸There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

⁹પ્રભુનો દૂત ભરવાડોની સમક્ષ આવીને ઊભો રહ્યો તેમની આજુબાજુ પ્રકાશ ચમકવા લાગ્યો. તેથી ભરવાડો ગભરાઇ ગયા.

⁹Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

¹⁰પ્રભુના દૂતે તેઓને કહ્યું, “ગભરાશો નહિ, કેમ કે હું તમને મોટા આનંદથી સુવાર્તા આપવા આવ્યો છું. જેથી આખા દેશના તમામ લોકોમાં આનંદ ઉભરાશે.

¹⁰The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

¹¹આજે દાઉદના શહેરમાં તમારો તારનાર જન્મ્યો છે તે જ ખ્રિસ્ત પ્રભુ છે.

¹¹For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

¹²તમે તેને ઓળખી શકો તે માટેની આ નિશાની છે. તમે એક બાળકને કપડાંમાં લપેટેલો અને ગભાણમાં સૂતેલો જોશો.”

¹²This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.”

¹³પછી તો આકાશમાંથી દૂતોનો મોટો સમૂહ પેલા પ્રભુના દૂત સાથે જોડાયો. અને બધાજ દૂતો દેવની સ્તુતિ કરવા લાગ્યા.

¹³Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,

¹⁴“પરમ ઊંચામાં દેવને મહિમા થાઓ, અને પૃથ્વી પર દેવને પ્રસન્ન કરે છે તેવા લોકોને શાંતિ પ્રાપ્ત થાઓ.”

¹⁴“Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.”

¹⁵પ્રભુના દૂતો ભરવાડોને છોડીને આકાશમાં પાછા ચાલ્યા ગયા. ભરવાડો એકબીજા સાથે વાતો કરવા લાગ્યા, “આપણે બેથલેહેમ જઇને અહીં જે કંઈ ઘટના બની છે તથા પ્રભુએ આપણને દર્શાવી છે તે જોવી જોઈએ.”

¹⁵It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

¹⁶ભરવાડો તો ઝડપથી ત્યાં પહોંચી ગયા અને મરિયમ તથા યૂસફને પણ શોધી કાઢ્યા. બાળક પણ ગભાણમાં સૂતેલુ હતું.

¹⁶They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.

¹⁷ભરવાડોએ બાળકને જોયું અને પછી પ્રભુના દૂતે બાળક વિષે તેઓને શું કહ્યું હતું તે તેઓએ જણાવ્યું.

¹⁷When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.

¹⁸ભરવાડોએ તેઓને જે કહ્યું તે સાંભળીને દરેક જણ નવાઇ પામ્યા.

¹⁸All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.

¹⁹પરંતુ મરિયમે આ બધી વાતો મનમાં રાખી અને વારંવાર તેના વિષે વિચાર કરતી.

¹⁹But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.

²⁰ભરવાડો પણ જે કંઈ જોયું અને સાંભળ્યું હતું, તે બધુ તેઓને દૂતે કહી હતી તે જ થઈ હતી. તે બધા પ્રભુનો મહિમા તથા સ્તુતિ કરતાં કરતાં ઘેર પાછા ફર્યા.

²⁰The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.

²¹જ્યારે બાળક આઠ દિવસનું થયું ત્યારે તેની સુન્નત કરાવવામાં આવી અને તેનું નામ ઈસુ રાખવામાં આવ્યું. પ્રભુના દૂતે માતાના ગર્ભમાં બાળક આવતા પહેલાં જ આ નામ આપ્યું હતું

²¹When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²²મૂસાના નિયમશાસ્ત્ર પ્રમાણે શુદ્ધિકરણનો સમય આવતા યૂસફ અને મરિયમ બાળકને પ્રભુ સમક્ષ રજૂ કરવા માટે યરૂશાલેમ લઈ ગયા.

²²When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord

²³પ્રભુના નિયમશાસ્ત્રમાં જે લખ્યું છે તે પ્રમાણે, “પરિવારમાં જ્યારે પ્રથમ દીકરો જન્મ લે છે તેને પ્રભુને સારું પવિત્ર ગણવો જોઈએ.”

²³(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), Exodus 13:2,12

²⁴વળી પ્રભુના નિયમશાસ્ત્ર પ્રમાણે લોકોએ બલિદાન પણ આપવાનું હોય છે. તે મુજબ હોલાંની એક જોડ અથવા કબૂતરનાં બે બચ્ચાનું બલિદાન આપવાનું હોય છે. તેથી યૂસફ અને મરિયમ આ વિધિ કરવા યરૂશાલેમ ગયા.

²⁴and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Leviticus 12:8

²⁵યરૂશાલેમમાં શિમયોન નામનો માણસ રહેતો હતો. તે ઘણો ઉત્તમ ધાર્મિક નિષ્ઠાવાળો માણસ હતો. તે ઈસ્ત્રાએલના લોકોના સુખ માટે પ્રભુના આગમનની વાટ જોતો હતો. પવિત્ર આત્મા તેની સાથે હતો.

²⁵Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.

²⁶પવિત્ર આત્માએ શિમયોનને કહ્યું હતું કે જ્યાં સુધી તે પ્રભુ ખ્રિસ્તનાં દર્શન નહિ કરે ત્યાં સુધી તેનું મૃત્યુ થશે નહિ.

²⁶It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew) both mean “Anointed One”

²⁷પવિત્ર આત્માના માર્ગદર્શનથી તે મંદિરમાં ગયો. યહૂદિઓના નિયમશાસ્ત્રની વિધિ કરવા માટે મરિયમે અને યૂસફ બાળ ઈસુને લઈને મંદિરમાં આવ્યા.

²⁷He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,

²⁸શિમયોને બાળકને હાથમાં લીધું અને દેવનો આભાર માન્યો.

²⁸then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

²⁹“પ્રભુ, હવે તેં આપેલા વચન પ્રમાણે આ તારા સેવકને શાંતિથી મૃત્યુનું શરણ લેવા દે.

²⁹“Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;

³⁰કારણ કે મેં મારી પોતાની આંખો વડે તારા તારણનાં દર્શન કર્યા છે.

³¹તમે બધાજ લોકો માટે તેને તૈયાર કર્યો છે.

³²તે જગતના લોકો માટે જ્યોતિ છે જે બીન યહૂદિઓને તમારો માર્ગ બતાવશે. તે ઈસ્ત્રાએલના લોકોનો મહિમા વધારશે.”

³²a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.”

³³શિમયોને ઈસુ વિષે જે કંઈ કહ્યું તે સાંભળીને તેના માતાપિતા નવાઇ પામ્યા.

³³Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,

³⁴પછી શિમયોને તેઓને આશીર્વાદ આપ્યો. અને ઈસુની મા મરિયમને કહ્યું, “ઈસ્ત્રાએલના ઘણા લોકોની ચડતી પડતી આ બાળકને કારણે થશે. તે દેવની તરફથી એંધાણીરુંપ બનશે. જેને કેટલાક લોકો સ્વીકારવા ના પાડશે.

³⁴and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.

³⁵લોકોના હ્રદયમાં રહેલા ગુપ્ત વિચારો જાહેર થશે. જે કંઈ ઘટનાઓ બનશે તેમાથી તારું હ્રદય દુ:ખી થશે.”

³⁵Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

³⁶મંદિરમાં હાન્ના નામની એક પ્રબોધિકા રહેતી હતી. જે આશેરના કુળની ફનુએલની પુત્રી હતી. હાન્ના ઘણી વૃદ્ધ હતી. લગ્નજીવનના સાત વર્ષ પછી તેના પતિનું અવસાન થતાં તે એકલી રહેતી હતી.

³⁶There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,

³⁷હવે તો તે 84 વર્ષની થઈ હતી અને તે વિધવા હતી. છતાં તેણે ક્યારેય મંદિર છોડ્યું ન હતું. તે મંદિરમા જ રહેતી અને રાતદિવસ ઉપવાસ અને પ્રાર્થના દ્ધારા પ્રભુની સ્તુતિ કરતી હતી.

³⁷and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day.

³⁸તેણે ત્યાં જ તે ક્ષણે આવીને પ્રભુનો આભાર માન્યો અને જે લોકો યરૂશાલેમના ઉદ્ધારની વાટ જોતા હતા તે બધાએ આ બાળક વિષે કહ્યું.

³⁸Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.

³⁹પ્રભુની આજ્ઞાનુસાર બધી જ વિધિઓ પૂર્ણ કરીને યૂસફ અને મરિયમ ગાલીલના નાસરેથમાં પોતાને ગામ પાછા ફર્યા.

³⁹When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

⁴⁰દેવની કૃપા તે નાના બાળક સાથે હતી. તેથી તે જેમ જેમ મોટો થતો ગયો તેમ તેમ વધારે પરાક્રમી અને બુદ્ધિશાળી થતો ગયો.

⁴⁰The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴¹પ્રતિવર્ષ પાસ્ખાપર્વ વખતે ઈસુના માતાપિતા યરૂશાલેમ જતાં હતા.

⁴¹His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

⁴²જ્યારે ઈસુ બાર વર્ષનો થયો ત્યારે તેઓ પર્વમાં હંમેશા જે પ્રમાણે જતા હતા તે જ પ્રમાણે ગયા.

⁴²When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast,

⁴³જ્યારે પર્વની ઉજવણી પૂરી થઈ ત્યારે તેઓ ધેર પાછા ફર્યા. પરંતુ બાળ ઈસુ તો યરૂશાલેમમાં જ રહી ગયો. તેના માતાપિતા તેના વિષે કંઈ જ જાણતા નહોતા.

⁴³and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it,

⁴⁴તેમણે વિચાર્યુ કે ઈસુ તે સમુહમાં હશે. એક દિવસની મુસાફરી કર્યા પછી તેની શોધમાં તેઓ નીકળ્યા. તેઓએ તેમના પરિવારમાં તથા નજીકના મિત્રમંડળમાં શોધ કરી. તે માટે યૂસફ અને મરિયમ આખો દિવસ ફર્યા.

⁴⁴but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

⁴⁵પરંતુ યૂસફ અને મરિયમને ક્યાંય ઈસુ જડ્યો નહિ. તેથી ફરી પાછા તેની શોધમાં યરૂશાલેમ ગયા.

⁴⁵When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

⁴⁶ત્રણ દિવસ પછી ઈસુ તેઓને જડ્યો. ઈસુ મંદિરમાં ધર્મગુરુંઓ સાથે બેસીને પ્રશ્રોની ચર્ચા કરી રહ્યો હતો.

⁴⁶It happened after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions.

⁴⁷જે દરેક વ્યક્તિએ તેને સાંભળ્યો. તેના ચતુરાઇભર્યા ઉત્તરો અને સમજશક્તિ જોઈને આશ્ચર્ય પામ્યા હતા.

⁴⁷All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

⁴⁸ઈસુના માતાપિતાએ જ્યારે તેને જોયો ત્યારે તેઓ પણ નવાઇ પામ્યા. તેની માએ તેને પૂછયું, “દીકરા, અમારી સાથે આવું તેં કેમ કર્યુ? તારા પિતા અને હું તારા માટે બહુ ચિંતા કરતા હતા. અને તારી શોધ પણ કરી રહ્યા હતા.”

⁴⁸When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”

⁴⁹ઈસુએ તેઓને કહ્યું, “તમે મારી શોધ શાં માટે કરતા હતા? તમને ખબર હોવી જોઈએ કે, હું મારા પિતાનું કામ જ્યાં છે ત્યાં જ હોઇશ!”

⁴⁹He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

⁵⁰પરંતુ ઈસુએ જે કહ્યું તેનો અર્થ તેઓ સમજી શક્યા નહિ.

⁵⁰They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.

⁵¹ત્યારબાદ ઈસુ તેઓની સાથે નાસરેથ પાછો ફર્યો અને હંમેશા માતાપિતા જે કંઈ કહે તે બધાનું પાલન કરતો. તેની માતા હજુ પણ તે બધી બાબતો અંગે મનમાં વિચારતી હતી.

⁵¹And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

⁵²ઈસુએ વધુને વધુ અભ્યાસ કરવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું. તે કદમાં ઊંચો થયો અને લોકો ઈસુને ચાહતા અને ઈસુ દેવને પ્રસન્ન કરતો.

⁵²And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
