¹સમયે યોહાન બાપ્તિસ્ત આવ્યો અને તેણે યહૂદિયાના ઉજજડ પ્રદેશમાં ઉપદેશ આપવાનું શરૂ કર્યુ.

¹In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

²યોહાને કહ્યું કે, “પસ્તાવો કરો, કારણ આકાશનું રાજ્ય ટૂંક સમયમાં આવી રહ્યું છે.”

²“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

³યશાયા પ્રબોધકે જેના વિષે વાત કરી છે તે આ યોહાન બાપ્તિસ્મા કરનાર છે. યશાયા પ્રબોધકે કહ્યું છે: “એક વ્યક્તિ ઉજજડ પ્રદેશમાં પોકાર કરે છે: ‘પ્રભુ માટે માર્ગ તૈયાર કરો; અને તેના માટેનો માર્ગ સીધો કરો.”‘ યશાયા 40:3

³For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.” Isaiah 40:3

⁴યોહાનનાં વસ્રો ઊંટના વાળમાંથી બનાવેલાં હ6તાં. તેની કમરે ચામડાનો પટ્ટો. યોહાન તીડ અને જંગલી મઘ ખાતો હતો.

⁴Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

⁵યોહાનનો ઉપદેશ સાંભળવા લોકો યરૂશાલેમમથી, યર્દન નદીની આસપાસના સમગ્ર વિસ્તારમાંથી તથા યહૂદિયાના તમામ પ્રદેશોમાંથી આવતા હતાં.

⁵Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.

⁶લોકોએ પોતાના પાપની કબૂલાત કરી અને યોહાને તેઓને યર્દન નદીમાં બાપ્તિસ્મા આપ્યું.

⁶They were baptized or, immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ફરોશીઓ અને સદૂકીઓ તે સ્થળે તેના દ્વારા બાપ્તિસ્મા પામવા માટે આવતા હતાં. યોહાને તેમને જોયા ત્યારે તેમને કહ્યું કે: “તમે બધા સર્પો છો! પ્રભુનો કોપ આવી રહ્યો છે તેમાંથી બચવા તમને કોણે ચેતવણી આપી છે?

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, or, immersion he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁸તમે તમારા આચરણથી બતાવી આપો કે તમે ખરેખર પસ્તાવો કર્યો છે.

⁸Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!

⁹તમે એમ ન માનતા કે ‘ઈબ્રાહિમ અમારો પિતા છે’ તેથી અમે ઉગરી જઈશું. દેવ આ પથ્થરોમાંથી પણ ઈબ્રાહિમ માટે સંતાનો પેદા કરી શકે છે.

⁹Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

¹⁰અત્યારે પણ કુહાડી વૃક્ષોના મૂળ પાસે તૈયાર જ પડી છે. દરેક વૃક્ષ જે સારા ફળ આપતું નથી તેને કાપી નાંખશે, અને અગ્નિમાં ફેંકી દેશે.

¹⁰“Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

¹¹“તમે તમારા હૃદય અને જીવન બદલ્યાં છે એમ દર્શાવવા માટે હું તમને પાણીથી બાપ્તિસ્મા આપું છું. પણ હવે મારા પછી જે માણસ આવી રહ્યો છે, તે મારા કરતાં પણ મહાન છે જેનાં પગરખાં ઉપાડવા જેટલી પણ હું યોગ્યતા ધરાવતો નથી. તે તમને પવિત્ર આત્માથી અને અજ્ઞિથી બાપ્તિસ્મા આપશે.

¹¹I indeed baptize or, immerse you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. TR and NU add “and with fire”

¹²તેના હાથમાં સૂપડું છે જેના વડે અનાજને છોતરામાંથી જુદૂં પાડશે અને સાફ કરેલ સારા અનાજના દાણાને પોતાના કોઠારમાં ભરશે અને છોતરાંને એવા અગ્નિમાં બાળી નાખશે જે કદીયે હોલવાશે નહિ.”

¹²His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”

¹³તે સમયે ઈસુ ગાલીલથી યર્દન નદીએ આવ્યો. ઈસુ યોહાન પાસે આવ્યો અને યોહાન દ્વારા બાપ્તિસ્મા લેવાની પોતાની ઈચ્છા પ્રગટ કરી.

¹³Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

¹⁴પરંતુ યોહાન તેને રોકવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરતો હતો. યોહાને કહ્યું કે, “તારા થકી બાપ્તિસ્મા પામવાની જરૂરીયાત વાળો તો હું છું! તું મારી પાસે મારા થકી બાપ્તિસ્મા પામવા શા માટે આવ્યો છે?”

¹⁴But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”

¹⁵ઈસુએ ઉત્તર આપ્યો, “અત્યારે આમ જ થવા દે. દેવને જેની જરૂર છે તે બધું જ કરવું એ આપણા માટે સારું છે.” જેથી યોહાન ઈસુને બાપ્તિસ્મા આપવા કબૂલ થયો.

¹⁵But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

¹⁶બાપ્તિસ્મા પામ્યા પછી ઈસુ સીધે સીધો જ પાણીમાંથી બહાર આવ્યો. પછી તે વખતે આકાશ ઊઘડાયું અને તેણે દેવના આત્માને કબૂતરની જેમ નીચે આવતો અને પોતાની ઉપર ઊતરતો જોયો.

¹⁶Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.

¹⁷અને આકાશવાણી થઈ, “આ મારો પુત્ર છે અને હું તેને ચાહું છું. અને તેનાથી હું ખૂબજ પ્રસન્ન છું.”

¹⁷Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
