1ויהי כשמע אדני צדק מלך ירושלם כי לכד יהושע את העי ויחרימה כאשר עשה ליריחו ולמלכה כן עשה לעי ולמלכה וכי השלימו ישבי גבעון את ישראל ויהיו בקרבם׃
1And it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, that he had done to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,
2וייראו מאד כי עיר גדולה גבעון כאחת ערי הממלכה וכי היא גדולה מן העי וכל אנשיה גברים׃
2that they feared greatly; for Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
3וישלח אדני צדק מלך ירושלם אל הוהם מלך חברון ואל פראם מלך ירמות ואל יפיע מלך לכיש ואל דביר מלך עגלון לאמר׃
3And Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piream king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4עלו אלי ועזרני ונכה את גבעון כי השלימה את יהושע ואת בני ישראל׃
4Come up to me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
5ויאספו ויעלו חמשת מלכי האמרי מלך ירושלם מלך חברון מלך ירמות מלך לכיש מלך עגלון הם וכל מחניהם ויחנו על גבעון וילחמו עליה׃
5And the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, [and] the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and they encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
6וישלחו אנשי גבעון אל יהושע אל המחנה הגלגלה לאמר אל תרף ידיך מעבדיך עלה אלינו מהרה והושיעה לנו ועזרנו כי נקבצו אלינו כל מלכי האמרי ישבי ההר׃
6And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying, Withdraw not thy hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered against us.
7ויעל יהושע מן הגלגל הוא וכל עם המלחמה עמו וכל גבורי החיל׃
7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the valiant men.
8ויאמר יהוה אל יהושע אל תירא מהם כי בידך נתתים לא יעמד איש מהם בפניך׃
8And Jehovah said to Joshua, Fear them not; for into thy hand have I given them: not a man of them shall stand before thee.
9ויבא אליהם יהושע פתאם כל הלילה עלה מן הגלגל׃
9And Joshua came upon them suddenly; he went up from Gilgal all night.
10ויהמם יהוה לפני ישראל ויכם מכה גדולה בגבעון וירדפם דרך מעלה בית חורן ויכם עד עזקה ועד מקדה׃
10And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and smote them [with] a great slaughter at Gibeon; and he chased them on the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them up to Azekah and Makkedah.
11ויהי בנסם מפני ישראל הם במורד בית חורן ויהוה השליך עליהם אבנים גדלות מן השמים עד עזקה וימתו רבים אשר מתו באבני הברד מאשר הרגו בני ישראל בחרב׃
11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, -- they were at the descent of Beth-horon, -- that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them up to Azekah, and they died. They were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel had slain with the sword.
12אז ידבר יהושע ליהוה ביום תת יהוה את האמרי לפני בני ישראל ויאמר לעיני ישראל שמש בגבעון דום וירח בעמק אילון׃
12Then spoke Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah gave up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; And thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon!
13וידם השמש וירח עמד עד יקם גוי איביו הלא היא כתובה על ספר הישר ויעמד השמש בחצי השמים ולא אץ לבוא כיום תמים׃
13And the sun stood still, and the moon remained where it was, until the nation had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? And the sun remained standing in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a full day.
14ולא היה כיום ההוא לפניו ואחריו לשמע יהוה בקול איש כי יהוה נלחם לישראל׃
14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened to the voice of a man; for Jehovah fought for Israel.
15וישב יהושע וכל ישראל עמו אל המחנה הגלגלה׃
15And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.
16וינסו חמשת המלכים האלה ויחבאו במערה במקדה׃
16And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
17ויגד ליהושע לאמר נמצאו חמשת המלכים נחבאים במערה במקדה׃
17And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found, hid in the cave at Makkedah.
18ויאמר יהושע גלו אבנים גדלות אל פי המערה והפקידו עליה אנשים לשמרם׃
18And Joshua said, Roll great stones before the mouth of the cave, and set men before it to keep them.
19ואתם אל תעמדו רדפו אחרי איביכם וזנבתם אותם אל תתנום לבוא אל עריהם כי נתנם יהוה אלהיכם בידכם׃
19And ye, stay not, pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities; for Jehovah your God has given them into your hand.
20ויהי ככלות יהושע ובני ישראל להכותם מכה גדולה מאד עד תמם והשרידים שרדו מהם ויבאו אל ערי המבצר׃
20And it came to pass when Joshua and the children of Israel had ended smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, that the remnant which remained of them entered into fortified cities;
21וישבו כל העם אל המחנה אל יהושע מקדה בשלום לא חרץ לבני ישראל לאיש את לשנו׃
21and all the people returned to the camp to Joshua, at Makkedah, in peace; none moved his tongue against the children of Israel.
22ויאמר יהושע פתחו את פי המערה והוציאו אלי את חמשת המלכים האלה מן המערה׃
22And Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth to me those five kings out of the cave.
23ויעשו כן ויציאו אליו את חמשת המלכים האלה מן המערה את מלך ירושלם את מלך חברון את מלך ירמות את מלך לכיש את מלך עגלון׃
23And they did so, and brought forth to him those five kings out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
24ויהי כהוציאם את המלכים האלה אל יהושע ויקרא יהושע אל כל איש ישראל ויאמר אל קציני אנשי המלחמה ההלכוא אתו קרבו שימו את רגליכם על צוארי המלכים האלה ויקרבו וישימו את רגליהם על צואריהם׃
24And it came to pass when they had brought forth those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, Come forward, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came forward and put their feet on their necks.
25ויאמר אליהם יהושע אל תיראו ואל תחתו חזקו ואמצו כי ככה יעשה יהוה לכל איביכם אשר אתם נלחמים אותם׃
25And Joshua said to them, Fear not, neither be dismayed; be strong and courageous, for thus will Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
26ויכם יהושע אחרי כן וימיתם ויתלם על חמשה עצים ויהיו תלוים על העצים עד הערב׃
26And afterwards Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
27ויהי לעת בוא השמש צוה יהושע וירידום מעל העצים וישלכם אל המערה אשר נחבאו שם וישמו אבנים גדלות על פי המערה עד עצם היום הזה׃
27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave where they had been hid, and laid great stones before the cave's mouth, [which remain] to this very day.
28ואת מקדה לכד יהושע ביום ההוא ויכה לפי חרב ואת מלכה החרם אותם ואת כל הנפש אשר בה לא השאיר שריד ויעש למלך מקדה כאשר עשה למלך יריחו׃
28And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, him and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed; he let none remain; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29ויעבר יהושע וכל ישראל עמו ממקדה לבנה וילחם עם לבנה׃
29And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
30ויתן יהוה גם אותה ביד ישראל ואת מלכה ויכה לפי חרב ואת כל הנפש אשר בה לא השאיר בה שריד ויעש למלכה כאשר עשה למלך יריחו׃
30And Jehovah gave it also and the king thereof into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it: and he did to the king thereof as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31ויעבר יהושע וכל ישראל עמו מלבנה לכישה ויחן עליה וילחם בה׃
31And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it.
32ויתן יהוה את לכיש ביד ישראל וילכדה ביום השני ויכה לפי חרב ואת כל הנפש אשר בה ככל אשר עשה ללבנה׃
32And Jehovah gave Lachish into the hand of Israel; and they took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33אז עלה הרם מלך גזר לעזר את לכיש ויכהו יהושע ואת עמו עד בלתי השאיר לו שריד׃
33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34ויעבר יהושע וכל ישראל עמו מלכיש עגלנה ויחנו עליה וילחמו עליה׃
34And Joshua, and all Israel with him, passed from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it.
35וילכדוה ביום ההוא ויכוה לפי חרב ואת כל הנפש אשר בה ביום ההוא החרים ככל אשר עשה ללכיש׃
35And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed on that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36ויעל יהושע וכל ישראל עמו מעגלונה חברונה וילחמו עליה׃
36And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it.
37וילכדוה ויכוה לפי חרב ואת מלכה ואת כל עריה ואת כל הנפש אשר בה לא השאיר שריד ככל אשר עשה לעגלון ויחרם אותה ואת כל הנפש אשר בה׃
37And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he let none remain, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.
38וישב יהושע וכל ישראל עמו דברה וילחם עליה׃
38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it.
39וילכדה ואת מלכה ואת כל עריה ויכום לפי חרב ויחרימו את כל נפש אשר בה לא השאיר שריד כאשר עשה לחברון כן עשה לדברה ולמלכה וכאשר עשה ללבנה ולמלכה׃
39And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: as he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libnah, and to the king thereof, so he did to Debir and to the king thereof.
40ויכה יהושע את כל הארץ ההר והנגב והשפלה והאשדות ואת כל מלכיהם לא השאיר שריד ואת כל הנשמה החרים כאשר צוה יהוה אלהי ישראל׃
40And Joshua smote the whole country, the mountain, and the south, and the lowland, and the hill-slopes, and all their kings: he let none remain, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah the God of Israel had commanded.
41ויכם יהושע מקדש ברנע ועד עזה ואת כל ארץ גשן ועד גבעון׃
41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gazah, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon;
42ואת כל המלכים האלה ואת ארצם לכד יהושע פעם אחת כי יהוה אלהי ישראל נלחם לישראל׃
42and all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time; for Jehovah the God of Israel fought for Israel.
43וישב יהושע וכל ישראל עמו אל המחנה הגלגלה׃
43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.
