1ויקם כל קהלם ויוליכהו אל פילטוס׃
1And the whole multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate.
2ויחלו לדבר עליו שטנה לאמר את זה מצאנו מסית את העם ומנע אתו מתת מס אל הקיסר באמרו כי הוא מלך המשיח׃
2And they began to accuse him, saying, We have found this [man] perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.
3וישאלהו פילטוס לאמר האתה הוא מלך היהודים ויען אתו ויאמר אתה אמרת׃
3And Pilate demanded of him saying, Art *thou* the king of the Jews? And he answering him said, Thou sayest.
4ויאמר פילטוס אל ראשי הכהנים ואל המון העם לא מצאתי דבר אשם באיש הזה׃
4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no guilt in this man.
5והם התאמצו לדבר מדיח הוא את העם בלמדו בכל יהודה החל מן הגליל ועד הנה׃
5But they insisted, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee even on to here.
6ויהי כשמע פילטוס את שם הגליל וישאל אם הוא איש גלילי׃
6But Pilate, having heard Galilee [named], demanded if the man were a Galilaean;
7וכאשר ידע כי מממשלת הורדוס הוא שלחו אל הורדוס אשר היה גם הוא בירושלים בימים האלה׃
7and having learned that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, remitted him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem in those days.
8וישמח הורדוס עד מאד כראותו את ישוע כי מימים רבים אוה לראת אתו על כי שמע את שמעו ויקו לראת אות אשר יעשה׃
8And when Herod saw Jesus he greatly rejoiced, for he had been a long while desirous of seeing him, because of hearing many things concerning him, and he hoped to see some sign done by him;
9וירב לשאל אותו והוא לא השיב אתו דבר׃
9and he questioned him in many words, but *he* answered him nothing.
10ויעמדו הכהנים הגדולים והסופרים ויתחזקו לדבר עליו שטנה׃
10And the chief priests and the scribes stood and accused him violently.
11ויבז אתו הורדוס עם צבאותיו ויהתל בו וילבש אותו בגד זהורית וישלחהו אל פילטוס׃
11And Herod with his troops having set him at nought and mocked him, having put a splendid robe upon him, sent him back to Pilate.
12ביום ההוא נהיו פילטוס והורדוס לאהבים יחדו כי מלפנים איבה היתה בינתם׃
12And Pilate and Herod became friends with one another the same day, for they had been at enmity before between themselves.
13ויקרא פילטוס את ראשי הכהנים ואת השרים ואת העם׃
13And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14ויאמר אליהם הבאתם לפני את האיש הזה כמסית את העם והנה אני חקרתיו לעיניכם ולא מצאתי באיש הזה אשמת מאומה מן הדברים אשר אתם טוענים עליו׃
14said to them, Ye have brought to me this man as turning away the people [to rebellion], and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found nothing criminal in this man as to the things of which ye accuse him;
15וגם הורדוס לא מצא כי שלחתי אתכם אליו והנה אין בו חטא משפט מות׃
15nor Herod either, for I remitted you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done by him.
16על כן איסרנו ואפטרנו׃
16Having chastised him therefore, I will release him.
17ועליו היה לפטר להם איש אחד בימי החג׃
17( Now he was obliged to release one for them at the feast.)
18ויצעקו כל המונם ויאמרו הסר את זה ופטר לנו את בר אבא׃
18But they cried out in a mass saying, Away with this [man] and release Barabbas to us;
19והוא היה משלך בית האסורים על דבר מרד אשר נהיה בעיר ועל דבר רצח׃
19who was one who, for a certain tumult which had taken place in the city, and [for] murder, had been cast into prison.
20ויסף פילטוס לשאת קולו כי חפץ לפטר את ישוע׃
20Pilate therefore, desirous to release Jesus, again addressed [them].
21והמה צעקו אליו לאמר הצלב אותו הצלב׃
21But they cried out in reply saying, Crucify, crucify him.
22ויאמר אליהם פעם שלישית מה אפוא עשה זה רעה כל אשמת מות לא מצאתי בו על כן איסרנו ואפטרנו׃
22And he said the third time to them, What evil then has this [man] done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will chastise him therefore and release him.
23ויפצרו בו בקול גדול ויבקשו כי יצלב ויחזק קולם וקול הכהנים הגדולים׃
23But they were urgent with loud voices, begging that he might be crucified. And their voices [and those of the chief priests] prevailed.
24ויגזר פילטוס כי תעשה בקשתם׃
24And Pilate adjudged that what they begged should take place.
25ויפטר להם את המשלך בית האסורים על דבר מרד ורצח את אשר שאלו ואת ישוע מסר לרצונם׃
25And he released him who, for tumult and murder, had been cast into prison, whom they begged for, and Jesus he delivered up to their will.
26וכאשר הוליכהו משם ויחזיקו באיש אחד הבא מן השדה ושמו שמעון איש קוריני וישימו עליו את הצלב לשאת אחרי ישוע׃
26And as they led him away, they laid hold on a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, and put the cross upon him to bear it behind Jesus.
27וילכו אחריו המון עם רב והמון נשים והנה ספדות ומקוננות עליו׃
27And a great multitude of the people, and of women who wailed and lamented him, followed him.
28ויפן ישוע ויאמר אליהן בנות ירושלים אל תבכינה עלי כי אם על נפשכן בכינה ועל בניכן׃
28And Jesus turning round to them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me, but weep over yourselves and over your children;
29כי הנה ימים באים ואמרו אשרי העקרות ואשרי המעים אשר לא ילדו והשדים אשר לא היניקו׃
29for behold, days are coming in which they will say, Blessed [are] the barren, and wombs that have not borne, and breasts that have not given suck.
30אז יחלו לאמר אל ההרים נפלו עלינו ואל הגבעות כסונו׃
30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall upon us; and to the hills, Cover us:
31כי אם יעשו כזאת בעץ הלח מה יעשה ביבש׃
31for if these things are done in the green tree, what shall take place in the dry?
32וגם שנים אחרים אנשי בליעל מוצאים אתו למות׃
32Now two others also, malefactors, were led with him to be put to death.
33ויהי כאשר באו אל המקום הנקרא גלגלתא ויצלבו אתו שם ואת אנשי הבליעל זה לימינו וזה לשמאלו׃
33And when they came to the place which is called Skull, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, the other on the left.
34ויאמר ישוע אבי סלח להם כי לא ידעו מה הם עשים ויחלקו בגדיו להם ויפילו גורל׃
34And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And, parting out his garments, they cast lots.
35והעם עמד שם וראה וילעגו לו השרים לאמר את אחרים הושיע יושע נא את נפשו אם הוא המשיח בחיר האלהים׃
35And the people stood beholding, and the rulers also [with them] sneered, saying, He has saved others; let him save himself if this is the Christ, the chosen one of God.
36ויהתלו בו אנשי הצבא ויגשו ויביאו לו חמץ׃
36And the soldiers also made game of him, coming up offering him vinegar,
37ויאמרו אם אתה הוא מלך היהודים הושע את נפשך׃
37and saying, If *thou* be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38וגם מכתב היה ממעל לו בכתב יוני ורומי ועברי זה הוא מלך היהודים׃
38And there was also an inscription [written] over him in Greek, and Roman, and Hebrew letters: This is the King of the Jews.
39ואחד מאנשי הבליעל התלוים גדפו לאמר הלא אתה המשיח הושע את עצמך ואתנו׃
39Now one of the malefactors who had been hanged spoke insultingly to him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us.
40ויען האחר ויגער בו לאמר האינך ירא את האלהים בהיותך בעצם הענש הזה׃
40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost *thou* too not fear God, thou that art under the same judgment?
41והן אנחנו בו כמשפט כי לקחנו כפי מעשינו אבל זה לא עשה מאומה רע׃
41and *we* indeed justly, for we receive the just recompense of what we have done; but this [man] has done nothing amiss.
42ויאמר אל ישוע זכרני נא אדני בבאך במלכותך׃
42And he said to Jesus, Remember me, [Lord,] when thou comest in thy kingdom.
43ויאמר ישוע אליו אמן אמר אני לך כי היום תהיה עמדי בגן עדן׃
43And Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
44ויהי כשעה הששית והנה חשך על כל הארץ עד השעה התשיעית׃
44And it was about [the] sixth hour, and there came darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour.
45ויחשך השמש ותקרע פרכת ההיכל לשנים קרעים׃
45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple rent in the midst.
46ויקרא ישוע בקול גדול ויאמר אבי בידך אפקיד רוחי ובאמרו זאת נפח נפשו׃
46And Jesus, having cried with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. And having said this, he expired.
47וירא שר המאה את אשר נהיתה ויתן כבוד לאלהים לאמר אכן האיש הזה צדיק היה׃
47Now the centurion, seeing what took place, glorified God, saying, In very deed this man was just.
48וכל המון העם אשר התאספו יחד למראה הזה בהביטם אל כל אשר נעשה תופפו על לבביהם וישובו׃
48And all the crowds who had come together to that sight, having seen the things that took place, returned, beating [their] breasts.
49וכל מידעיו עמדו מרחוק וגם הנשים אשר הלכו אתו מן הגליל ועיניהן ראות את אלה׃
49And all those who knew him stood afar off, the women also who had followed him from Galilee, beholding these things.
50והנה איש ושמו יוסף והוא מן היעצים איש טוב וצדיק מן הרמתים עיר היהודים׃
50And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a councillor, a good man and a just
51אשר לא הסכים לעצתם ולפעלם ומחכה גם הוא למלכות האלהים׃
51(this [man] had not assented to their counsel and deed), of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who also waited, [himself also,] for the kingdom of God
52ויגש אל פילטוס וישאל ממנו את גוית ישוע׃
52-- he having gone to Pilate begged the body of Jesus;
53ויורד אתה ויכרכה בסדינים וישימה בקבר חצוב בסלע אשר עדן לא הושם בו אדם׃
53and having taken it down, wrapped it in fine linen and placed him in a tomb hewn in the rock, where no one had ever been laid.
54ויום ערב שבת היה והשבת הגיעה׃
54And it was preparation day, and [the] sabbath twilight was coming on.
55ותלכנה אחריו מן הנשים אשר באו אתו מן הגליל ותחזינה את הקבר ואת אשר הושם בו גויתו׃
55And women, who had come along with him out of Galilee, having followed, saw the sepulchre and how his body was placed.
56ואחרי שובן הכינו סמים ומרקחות ובשבת שבתו כפי המצוה׃
56And having returned they prepared aromatic spices and ointments, and remained quiet on the sabbath, according to the commandment.
