¹Setelah beberapa waktu lamanya, pada tahun ketiga musim kering itu, TUHAN berkata kepada Elia, "Pergilah menghadap Raja Ahab, tak lama lagi Aku akan menurunkan hujan."

¹And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

²Maka berangkatlah Elia. Pada waktu itu bencana kelaparan sudah sangat parah di Samaria.

²And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.

³Karena itu Ahab memanggil Obaja untuk datang menghadap. (Obaja adalah kepala rumah tangga istana. Ia seorang yang sungguh-sungguh beribadat kepada TUHAN.

³And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:

⁴Pada waktu Izebel membunuh nabi-nabi TUHAN, Obaja ini menolong 100 orang nabi dengan menyembunyikan mereka di dalam gua--50 orang dalam satu gua--serta memberi mereka makan dan minum.)

⁴for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁵Ahab berkata kepada Obaja, "Mari kita menjelajahi seluruh negeri ini dan mencari mata air atau sungai. Mungkin kita akan menemukan rumput untuk menyelamatkan kuda dan bagal kita, supaya tidak perlu kita membunuh seekor pun dari ternak kita."

⁵And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

⁶Setelah membagi daerah yang akan dijelajahi itu, mereka pun berangkat. Ahab ke satu jurusan dan Obaja ke jurusan yang lain.

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁷Di tengah jalan Obaja bertemu dengan Elia. Setelah mengenali Elia, Obaja sujud menghormatinya lalu bertanya, "Betulkah ini Pak Elia?"

⁷And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?

⁸"Betul, saya Elia," jawab Elia. "Sekarang pergilah beritahukan rajamu bahwa saya ada di sini."

⁸And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].

⁹Obaja menjawab, "Apa salah saya sehingga Bapak mau menyerahkan saya kepada Ahab untuk dibunuh?

⁹And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

¹⁰Demi TUHAN yang hidup, Allah yang disembah oleh Bapak, saya menyatakan bahwa raja telah menyuruh saya mencari Bapak di mana-mana. Apabila di suatu negeri penguasanya berkata bahwa Bapak tidak ada di sana, Ahab menuntut agar penguasa negeri itu bersumpah bahwa Bapak memang tidak ditemukan di situ.

¹⁰As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹¹Dan sekarang Bapak mau supaya saya pergi kepadanya dan berkata bahwa Bapak ada di sini?

¹¹And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].

¹²Apabila saya pergi dari sini, Roh TUHAN mungkin akan membawa Bapak ke tempat yang tidak saya ketahui! Dan kalau saya memberitahukan kepada Ahab bahwa Bapak ada di sini, kemudian ia tidak menemukan Bapak, tentu ia akan membunuh saya. Ketahuilah, Pak, saya ini sungguh-sungguh beribadat kepada TUHAN sejak kecil!

¹²And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.

¹³Apakah Bapak belum mendengar bahwa ketika Izebel membunuh nabi-nabi TUHAN, saya menyembunyikan 100 dari mereka di dalam gua--50 orang dalam satu gua--dan memberi mereka makan dan minum?

¹³Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹⁴Sekarang, mengapa Bapak menyuruh saya pergi memberitahukan kepada raja bahwa Bapak ada di sini? Ia pasti akan membunuh saya!"

¹⁴And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here]; and he will slay me.

¹⁵Elia menjawab, "Demi TUHAN Yang Mahakuasa yang saya layani, saya berjanji akan datang sendiri menghadap raja hari ini juga."

¹⁵And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

¹⁶Maka pergilah Obaja melaporkan kepada raja, dan Ahab pun berangkat untuk menemui Elia.

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁷Pada waktu Ahab melihat Elia, Ahab berseru, "Ini dia si pengacau di Israel!"

¹⁷And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?

¹⁸"Saya bukan pengacau," sahut Elia, "tetapi Baginda sendiri. Baginda dan keluarga Bagindalah yang pengacau. Dengan menyembah berhala-berhala Baal, Baginda melanggar perintah-perintah TUHAN.

¹⁸And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.

¹⁹Sekarang, perintahkanlah seluruh rakyat Israel untuk bertemu dengan saya di Gunung Karmel. Bawa juga keempat ratus lima puluh nabi Baal dan keempat ratus nabi Dewi Asyera itu yang dibiayai oleh permaisuri Izebel!"

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.

²⁰Maka Ahab mengerahkan seluruh rakyat dan nabi-nabi Baal itu ke Gunung Karmel.

²⁰So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

²¹Lalu Elia mendekati rakyat itu dan berkata, "Sampai kapan kalian mau tetap mendua hati? Kalau TUHAN itu Allah, sembahlah TUHAN! Kalau Baal itu Allah, sembahlah Baal!" Rakyat yang berkumpul di situ diam saja.

²¹And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

²²Kemudian Elia berkata, "Di antara nabi-nabi TUHAN hanya sayalah yang tertinggal, padahal di sini ada 450 nabi Baal.

²²Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

²³Sekarang bawalah ke mari dua ekor sapi jantan. Suruh nabi-nabi Baal itu mengambil seekor dan menyembelihnya, kemudian memotong-motongnya lalu meletakkannya di atas kayu api. Tetapi mereka tidak boleh menyalakan api di situ. Sapi yang seekor lagi akan saya persiapkan begitu juga. Saya akan menyembelihnya dan memotong-motongnya serta meletakkannya di atas kayu api. Tapi saya pun tak akan menyalakan api di situ.

²³Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.

²⁴Biarlah nabi-nabi Baal itu berdoa kepada dewa mereka, dan saya pun akan berdoa kepada TUHAN. Yang menjawab dengan mengirim api, Dialah Allah." Seluruh rakyat menyahut dengan suara yang keras, "Setuju!"

²⁴And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

²⁵Lalu kata Elia kepada nabi-nabi Baal itu, "Karena kalian banyak, silakan kalian memilih dulu sapinya dan menyiapkannya, tetapi jangan menyalakan api pada kayunya. Setelah itu berdoalah kepada ilahmu."

²⁵And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.

²⁶Maka mereka memilih seekor sapi dan menyiapkannya. Setelah itu mereka berdoa kepada Baal dari pagi sampai tengah hari sambil berteriak-teriak, "Jawablah kami, Baal!" Mereka melakukan itu sambil terus menari-nari sekeliling mezbah mereka. Tetapi tidak ada jawaban sama sekali.

²⁶And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.

²⁷Pada tengah hari mulailah Elia memperolok-olok mereka. "Berdoalah lebih keras! Ia ilah, bukan? Mungkin ia sedang melamun, atau ke kamar kecil. Boleh jadi juga ia sedang bepergian! Atau barangkali ia sedang tidur, dan kalian harus membangunkan dia!"

²⁷And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.

²⁸Nabi-nabi itu berdoa lebih keras lagi. Dan seperti yang biasanya mereka lakukan, mereka menggores-goresi badan mereka dengan pedang dan tombak sampai darah bercucuran.

²⁸And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.

²⁹Begitulah mereka terus-menerus sampai petang hari seperti orang kesurupan. Tetapi tidak ada yang menjawab, tidak ada yang memperhatikan.

²⁹And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

³⁰Lalu kata Elia kepada seluruh rakyat itu, "Mari mendekat!" Mereka semua berkumpul di sekelilingnya, kemudian ia mulai memperbaiki mezbah TUHAN yang telah runtuh.

³⁰And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.

³¹Ia mengambil dua belas batu, setiap batu mewakili salah satu dari kedua belas suku keturunan Yakub, yakni orang yang telah diberi nama Israel oleh TUHAN.

³¹And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.

³²Dengan batu-batu itu Elia membangun kembali mezbah tempat ibadat kepada TUHAN. Di sekeliling mezbah itu ia menggali parit yang cukup besar sehingga dapat menampung kurang lebih lima belas liter air.

³²And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

³³Ia menyusun kayu api di atas mezbah, lalu sapi yang seekor itu dipotong-potongnya dan ditaruhnya di atas kayu itu. Kemudian ia berkata, "Isilah empat tempayan dengan air sampai penuh, lalu tuangkan air itu ke atas persembahan kurban dan kayunya." Setelah mereka melakukan hal itu,

³³And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.

³⁴ia berkata, "Sekali lagi," lalu mereka melakukannya. "Satu kali lagi," kata Elia, dan mereka melakukannya pula.

³⁴And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.

³⁵Maka mengalirlah air di sekeliling mezbah itu sehingga paritnya pun penuh air.

³⁵And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

³⁶Ketika tiba saat mempersembahkan kurban petang, Nabi Elia mendekati mezbah itu lalu berdoa, "Ya TUHAN, Allah yang disembah oleh Abraham, Ishak dan Yakub, nyatakanlah sekarang ini bahwa Engkaulah Allah di Israel, dan saya hamba-Mu. Nyatakanlah juga bahwa segala yang saya lakukan ini adalah atas perintah-Mu.

³⁶And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

³⁷Jawablah, TUHAN! Jawablah saya supaya rakyat ini tahu bahwa Engkau, ya TUHAN, adalah Allah, dan bahwa Engkaulah yang membuat mereka kembali kepada-Mu."

³⁷Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again.

³⁸Lalu TUHAN mengirim api dari langit dan membakar hangus kurban itu bersama kayu apinya, batu-batunya dan tanahnya serta menjilat habis air yang terdapat di dalam parit itu.

³⁸Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁹Pada saat rakyat melihat hal itu mereka tersungkur ke tanah sambil berkata, "TUHAN itu Allah! Sungguh TUHAN itu Allah!"

³⁹And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.

⁴⁰Maka berkatalah Elia, "Tangkap nabi-nabi Baal itu! Jangan biarkan seorang pun lolos!" Lalu orang-orang menangkap nabi-nabi Baal itu, kemudian Elia membawa mereka ke Sungai Kison dan di sana ia membunuh mereka semuanya.

⁴⁰and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

⁴¹Setelah itu berkatalah Elia kepada Raja Ahab, "Sekarang baiklah Baginda pergi makan! Sebentar lagi akan hujan, sebab derunya sudah terdengar."

⁴¹And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.

⁴²Lalu Ahab pergi makan, dan Elia naik ke atas Gunung Karmel. Di sana ia sujud dengan mukanya ke tanah di antara kedua lututnya.

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.

⁴³Kepada pelayannya ia berkata, "Naiklah ke puncak dan lihatlah ke arah laut." Hamba itu naik, lalu kembali dan berkata, "Saya tidak melihat apa-apa." Sampai tujuh kali Elia menyuruh hambanya naik turun untuk melihat.

⁴³And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

⁴⁴Pada yang ketujuh kalinya hamba itu kembali dan berkata, "Saya melihat awan sekecil telapak tangan datang dari arah laut." Maka Elia berkata kepada hambanya, "Pergilah kepada Raja Ahab, suruh dia naik ke keretanya dan pulang sebelum ia terhalang oleh hujan."

⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready [thy chariot], and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

⁴⁵Dalam sekejap saja langit menjadi mendung, dan angin kencang bertiup serta hujan lebat pun mulai turun. Ahab naik ke keretanya lalu pulang ke Yizreel.

⁴⁵And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:

⁴⁶Saat itu Elia mendapat kekuatan dari TUHAN. Ia melipat jubahnya ke atas dan mengikatnya pada pinggangnya lalu berlari mendahului Ahab sepanjang jalan sampai ke pintu gerbang kota Yizreel.

⁴⁶and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
