1Sementara itu orang Filistin bertempur melawan orang Israel di pegunungan Gilboa. Banyak orang Israel tewas di situ, dan yang lainnya, termasuk Saul dan putra-putranya melarikan diri.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.
2Tetapi mereka disusul oleh orang Filistin dan tiga orang di antara putra-putra Saul itu mati dibunuh; yaitu Yonatan, Abinadab, dan Malkisua.
2The Philistines followed hard on Saul and on his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3Pertempuran amat sengit di sekitar Saul, dan ia sendiri kena panah-panah musuh sehingga luka parah.
3The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers.
4Lalu kata Saul kepada pemuda yang membawa senjatanya, "Cabutlah pedangmu dan tikamlah aku, supaya aku jangan dipermain-mainkan dan dibunuh oleh orang-orang yang tak mengenal TUHAN itu." Tetapi pemuda itu tidak mau menikamnya, karena ia sangat menghormatinya. Sebab itu Saul mengambil pedangnya sendiri dan merebahkan dirinya ke atas mata pedang itu.
4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me!” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it.
5Ketika pemuda itu melihat bahwa Saul sudah wafat, ia pun merebahkan dirinya ke atas mata pedangnya lalu tewas di samping Saul.
5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died with him.
6Demikianlah Saul bersama ketiga putranya, dan semua anak buahnya serta pemuda itu tewas pada satu hari itu.
6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together.
7Ketika orang-orang Israel yang tinggal di seberang Lembah Yizreel dan sebelah timur Sungai Yordan mendengar bahwa tentara Israel telah melarikan diri, dan bahwa Saul serta putra-putranya sudah tewas, mereka lari meninggalkan kota-kota mereka. Kemudian orang Filistin menduduki kota-kota itu.
7When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.
8Besoknya ketika orang Filistin datang untuk merampoki mayat-mayat, mereka menemukan Saul dan ketiga putranya sudah tewas di pegunungan Gilboa.
8It happened on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9Mereka memenggal kepala Saul dan mengambil baju perangnya, lalu orang Filistin mengirim utusan ke seluruh negeri Filistin untuk menyampaikan kabar baik itu kepada rakyat dan dewa mereka.
9They cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to the house of their idols, and to the people.
10Kemudian baju perang Saul itu disimpan di dalam kuil dewi Asytoret, dan badannya dipakukan pada tembok kota Bet-Sean.
10They put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.
11Tetapi penduduk Yabesh di Gilead mendengar apa yang telah dilakukan orang Filistin kepada Saul,
11When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul,
12lalu orang-orang yang paling berani berangkat dari situ dan berjalan sepanjang malam ke Bet-Sean. Mereka menurunkan jenazah Saul dan jenazah putra-putranya dari tembok kota itu lalu membawanya ke Yabesh, dan membakarnya.
12all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
13Semua tulang-tulangnya dikumpulkan dan dikebumikan di bawah pohon tamariska di kota itu, kemudian berpuasalah mereka tujuh hari lamanya.
13They took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
