¹Setelah orang Filistin merebut Peti Perjanjian Allah, mereka membawanya dari Eben-Haezer ke kota mereka, Asdod.

¹Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

²Di situ peti itu dibawa masuk ke kuil dewa mereka, Dagon, dan diletakkan di samping patung dewa itu.

²The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

³Ketika penduduk Asdod besoknya pagi-pagi datang ke kuil itu, mereka melihat bahwa patung Dagon telah jatuh tertelungkup di tanah, di depan Peti Perjanjian TUHAN! Mereka mengangkat patung itu dan mengembalikannya ke tempatnya.

³When they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh. They took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

⁴Tetapi keesokan harinya, pagi-pagi, mereka melihat bahwa patung itu sudah jatuh lagi di depan Peti Perjanjian itu. Kali ini kepala patung itu dan kedua lengannya terpenggal dan terletak di ambang pintu; hanya badan patung itu yang masih utuh.

⁴When they arose early on the next day morning, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso was intact.

⁵(Itulah sebabnya, sampai hari ini para imam dewa Dagon dan semua penyembahnya di Asdod melangkahi ambang pintu kuil Dagon itu dan tidak menginjaknya.)

⁵Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day.

⁶Kemudian TUHAN menghukum penduduk Asdod dan daerah sekitarnya dengan benjol-benjol pada tubuh mereka.

⁶But the hand of Yahweh was heavy on them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders.

⁷Ketika mereka melihat apa yang sedang terjadi pada mereka itu, mereka berkata, "Allah Israel menghukum kita dan dewa kita Dagon. Kita tidak boleh membiarkan Peti Perjanjian-Nya tinggal di sini lebih lama lagi."

⁷When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us; for his hand is severe on us, and on Dagon our god.”

⁸Sebab itu mereka mengundang kelima raja Filistin supaya berkumpul, lalu bertanya, "Peti Perjanjian Allah Israel itu harus kita apakan?" Jawab raja-raja itu, "Pindahkanlah ke kota Gat." Jadi, peti itu dipindahkan ke kota Gat, sebuah kota Filistin yang lain.

⁸They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried over to Gath.” They carried the ark of the God of Israel there.

⁹Tetapi setelah peti itu sampai di situ, TUHAN menghukum kota itu pula dan menimbulkan kegemparan yang sangat besar. Penduduk kota itu, baik yang muda maupun yang tua dihukum dengan benjol-benjol yang tumbuh pada tubuh mereka.

⁹It was so, that after they had carried it about, the hand of Yahweh was against the city with a very great confusion: and he struck the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors broke out on them.

¹⁰Lalu Peti Perjanjian itu diantarkan ke Ekron, kota Filistin yang lain lagi. Setibanya peti itu di situ, penduduknya berteriak, katanya, "Peti Perjanjian Allah Israel itu dibawa ke mari untuk membunuh kita semua."

¹⁰So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. It happened, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people.”

¹¹Sebab itu mereka memanggil semua raja Filistin supaya berkumpul, lalu berkata, "Kembalikanlah Peti Perjanjian Allah Israel itu ke tempatnya semula supaya jangan dibunuhnya kita dan keluarga kita." Di seluruh kota terjadi kegemparan karena Allah menghukum penduduknya dengan sangat berat.

¹¹They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly confusion throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

¹²Orang-orang yang tidak mati, ditimpa penyakit benjol-benjol itu, sehingga penduduk kota itu berteriak kepada dewa-dewa mereka, meminta tolong.

¹²The men who didn’t die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
