¹Jósafat sonur hans tók ríki eftir hann og efldi sig gegn Ísrael.

¹Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel.

²Hann setti herlið í allar víggirtar borgir í Júda og lét fógeta í Júdaland og Efraímborgir, þær er Asa faðir hans hafði unnið.

²He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.

³Og Drottinn var með Jósafat, því að hann gekk á hinum fyrri vegum Davíðs forföður síns og leitaði ekki Baalanna,

³Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and didn’t seek the Baals,

⁴heldur leitaði Guðs föður síns og fór eftir skipunum hans og breytti ekki sem Ísrael.

⁴but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.

⁵Þess vegna staðfesti Drottinn konungdóminn í hendi hans, svo að allur Júda færði Jósafat gjafir, svo að honum hlotnaðist afar mikil auðlegð og sæmd.

⁵Therefore Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat tribute; and he had riches and honor in abundance.

⁶Og með því að honum óx hugur á vegum Drottins, þá afnam hann og fórnarhæðirnar og asérurnar úr Júda.

⁶His heart was lifted up in the ways of Yahweh: and furthermore he took away the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.

⁷En á þriðja ríkisári sínu sendi hann höfðingja sína Benhaíl, Óbadía, Sakaría, Netaneel og Míkaja til þess að kenna í Júdaborgum,

⁷Also in the third year of his reign he sent his princes, even Ben Hail, and Obadiah, and Zechariah, and Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;

⁸og með þeim levítana Semaja, Netanja, Sebadja, Asahel, Semíramót, Jónatan, Adónía, Tobía og Tob Adónía levíta, og ásamt þeim prestana Elísama og Jóram.

⁸and with them the Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.

⁹Þeir kenndu í Júda og höfðu með sér lögbók Drottins, og fóru um allar borgir í Júda og kenndu lýðnum.

⁹They taught in Judah, having the book of the law of Yahweh with them; and they went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught among the people.

¹⁰Og ótti við Drottin kom yfir öll heiðnu ríkin, er voru umhverfis Júda, svo að þau lögðu eigi í ófrið við Jósafat.

¹⁰The fear of Yahweh fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

¹¹Og nokkrir af Filistum færðu Jósafat gjafir og silfur í skatt. Einnig færðu Arabar honum fénað: sjö þúsund og sjö hundruð hrúta og sjö þúsund og sjö hundruð geithafra.

¹¹Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and silver for tribute; the Arabians also brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred male goats.

¹²Og þannig varð Jósafat æ voldugri, svo að yfir tók, og hann reisti hallir og vistaborgir í Júda.

¹²Jehoshaphat grew great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles and cities of store.

¹³Hafði hann afar mikinn vistaforða í Júdaborgum, og hermenn hafði hann í Jerúsalem, hina mestu kappa.

¹³He had many works in the cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem.

¹⁴Og þetta er tala þeirra eftir ættum þeirra: Af Júda voru þúsundhöfðingjar: Adna höfuðsmaður og þrjú hundruð þúsund hraustir kappar með honum.

¹⁴This was the numbering of them according to their fathers’ houses: Of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valor three hundred thousand;

¹⁵Honum næstur gekk Jóhanan höfuðsmaður og tvö hundruð og áttatíu þúsund manns með honum.

¹⁵and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand;

¹⁶Honum næstur var Amasja Síkríson, er sjálfviljuglega hafði gengið Drottni á hönd, og tvö hundruð þúsund hraustir kappar með honum.

¹⁶and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself to Yahweh; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor.

¹⁷En af Benjamín voru: Eljada kappi og tvö hundruð þúsund manns með honum, vopnaðir bogum og buklurum,

¹⁷Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield;

¹⁸og honum næstur Jósabad og hundrað og áttatíu þúsund herbúinna manna með honum.Þessir voru þeir, er konungi þjónuðu, auk þeirra, er konungur hafði sett í víggirtar borgir í öllu Júdalandi.

¹⁸and next to him Jehozabad and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready prepared for war.
