¹Þegar Drottinn ætlaði að láta Elía fara til himins í stormviðri, voru þeir Elía og Elísa á leið frá Gilgal.

¹It happened, when Yahweh would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

²Þá sagði Elía við Elísa: ,,Vertu hér kyrr, því að Drottinn hefir sent mig til Betel.`` En Elísa svaraði: ,,Svo sannarlega sem Drottinn lifir og svo sannarlega sem þú lifir, mun ég eigi við þig skilja.`` Fóru þeir þá ofan til Betel.

²Elijah said to Elisha, “Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me as far as Bethel.” Elisha said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

³Spámannasveinar þeir, er voru í Betel, gengu út á móti Elísa og sögðu við hann: ,,Veist þú að Drottinn ætlar í dag að nema herra þinn burt yfir höfði þér?`` Elísa svaraði: ,,Veit ég það líka. Verið hljóðir!``

³The sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from your head today?” He said, “Yes, I know it; hold your peace.”

⁴Þá sagði Elía við hann: ,,Elísa, vertu hér kyrr, því að Drottinn hefir sent mig til Jeríkó.`` Hann svaraði: ,,Svo sannarlega sem Drottinn lifir og svo sannarlega sem þú lifir, mun ég eigi við þig skilja.`` Fóru þeir þá til Jeríkó.

⁴Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho.

⁵Þá gengu spámannasveinar þeir, er voru í Jeríkó, til Elísa og sögðu við hann: ,,Veist þú að Drottinn ætlar í dag að nema herra þinn burt yfir höfði þér?`` Elísa svaraði: ,,Veit ég það líka. Verið hljóðir!``

⁵The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from your head today?” He answered, “Yes, I know it. Hold your peace.”

⁶Þá sagði Elía við hann: ,,Vertu hér kyrr, því að Drottinn hefir sent mig til Jórdanar.`` Hann svaraði: ,,Svo sannarlega sem Drottinn lifir og svo sannarlega sem þú lifir, mun ég eigi við þig skilja.`` Fóru þeir þá báðir saman.

⁶Elijah said to him, “Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” They both went on.

⁷En fimmtíu manns af spámannasveinunum fóru og námu staðar til hliðar í nokkurri fjarlægð, en hinir báðir gengu að Jórdan.

⁷Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood opposite them at a distance; and they both stood by the Jordan.

⁸Þá tók Elía skikkju sína, braut hana saman og sló á vatnið. Skipti það sér þá til beggja hliða, en þeir gengu báðir yfir um á þurru.

⁸Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that they two went over on dry ground.

⁹En er þeir voru komnir yfir um, sagði Elía við Elísa: ,,Bið þú mig einhvers, er ég megi veita þér, áður en ég verð numinn burt frá þér.`` Elísa svaraði: ,,Mættu mér þá hlotnast tveir hlutar af andagift þinni.``

⁹It happened, when they had gone over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be on me.”

¹⁰Þá mælti Elía: ,,Til mikils hefir þú mælst. En ef þú sér mig, er ég verð numinn burt frá þér, þá mun þér veitast það, ella eigi.``

¹⁰He said, “You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.”

¹¹En er þeir héldu áfram og voru að tala saman, þá kom allt í einu eldlegur vagn og eldlegir hestar og skildu þá að, og Elía fór til himins í stormviðri.

¹¹It happened, as they still went on, and talked, that behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

¹²Elisha saw it, and he cried, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” He saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and tore them in two pieces.

¹³Síðan tók hann upp skikkju Elía, er fallið hafði af honum, sneri við og gekk niður á Jórdanbakka,

¹³He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

¹⁴tók skikkju Elía, er fallið hafði af honum, sló á vatnið og sagði: ,,Hvar er nú Drottinn, Guð Elía?`` En er hann sló á vatnið, skipti það sér til beggja hliða, en Elísa gekk yfir um.

¹⁴He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and struck the waters, and said, “Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?” When he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha went over.

¹⁵Þegar spámannasveinarnir í Jeríkó sáu það hinumegin, sögðu þeir: ,,Andi Elía hvílir yfir Elísa.`` Gengu þeir í móti honum, lutu til jarðar fyrir honum

¹⁵When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho over against him saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” They came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

¹⁶og sögðu við hann: ,,Sjá, hér eru fimmtíu röskir menn með þjónum þínum. Lát þá fara og leita að herra þínum, ef andi Drottins kynni að hafa hrifið hann og varpað honum á eitthvert fjallið eða ofan í einhvern dalinn.`` En Elísa mælti: ,,Eigi skuluð þér senda þá.``

¹⁶They said to him, “See now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Please let them go and seek your master. Perhaps the Spirit of Yahweh has taken him up, and put him on some mountain, or into some valley. He said, “You shall not send them.”

¹⁷En er þeir lögðu mjög að honum, mælti hann: ,,Sendið þér þá.`` Sendu þeir þá fimmtíu manns, og leituðu þeir hans í þrjá daga, en fundu hann ekki.

¹⁷When they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, “Send them.” They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched for three days, but didn’t find him.

¹⁸Sneru þeir þá aftur til Elísa, og var hann þá enn í Jeríkó. Þá sagði hann við þá: ,,Sagði ég yður ekki, að þér skylduð ekki fara?``

¹⁸They came back to him, while he stayed at Jericho; and he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t go?’”

¹⁹Borgarmenn Jeríkó sögðu við Elísa: ,,Borg þessi liggur að vísu vel, eins og þú sjálfur sérð, herra, en vatnið er vont, og landið veldur því, að konur fæða fyrir tímann.``

¹⁹The men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, please, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land miscarries.”

²⁰Hann sagði við þá: ,,Færið mér nýja skál og látið í hana salt.`` Þeir gjörðu svo.

²⁰He said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” They brought it to him.

²¹Og hann gekk út að uppsprettu vatnsins, kastaði saltinu í hana og mælti: ,,Svo segir Drottinn: Ég gjöri vatn þetta heilnæmt. Upp frá þessu skal það eigi valda dauða né ótímaburði.``

²¹He went out to the spring of the waters, and threw salt into it, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘I have healed these waters. There shall not be from there any more death or miscarrying.’”

²²Þá varð vatnið heilnæmt samkvæmt orði Elísa, því er hann hafði talað, og er svo enn í dag.

²²So the waters were healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.

²³Þaðan hélt hann til Betel. Og er hann gekk upp veginn, gengu smásveinar út úr borginni, hæddu hann og kölluðu til hans: ,,Kom hingað, skalli! Kom hingað, skalli!``

²³He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldy! Go up, you baldhead!”

²⁴Sneri hann sér þá við, og er hann sá þá, formælti hann þeim í nafni Drottins. Þá komu tvær birnur út úr skóginum og rifu í sundur fjörutíu og tvo af drengjunum.Þaðan fór hann til Karmelfjalls og sneri þaðan aftur til Samaríu.

²⁴He looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Yahweh. Two female bears came out of the woods, and mauled forty-two of those youths.

²⁵Þaðan fór hann til Karmelfjalls og sneri þaðan aftur til Samaríu.

²⁵He went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
