1Móse og öldungar Ísraels buðu lýðnum og sögðu: ,,Varðveitið allar þær skipanir, sem ég legg fyrir yður í dag.
1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandment which I command you this day.
2Og þegar þér eruð komnir yfir Jórdan inn í landið, sem Drottinn Guð þinn gefur þér, þá skalt þú reisa upp stóra steina og strjúka þá utan kalki
2It shall be on the day when you shall pass over the Jordan to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, that you shall set yourself up great stones, and plaster them with plaster:
3og rita á þá öll orð lögmáls þessa, þá er þú ert kominn yfir um, til þess að þú komist inn í landið, sem Drottinn Guð þinn gefur þér, land sem flýtur í mjólk og hunangi, eins og Drottinn, Guð feðra þinna, hefir heitið þér.
3and you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have passed over; that you may go in to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
4Og þegar þér eruð komnir yfir Jórdan, þá skuluð þér reisa upp þessa steina, sem ég hefi mælt fyrir um í dag, á Ebalfjalli og strjúka þá utan kalki.
4It shall be, when you have passed over the Jordan, that you shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster.
5Þú skalt og reisa Drottni Guði þínum þar altari, altari af steinum. Þú mátt ekki bera að þeim járntól.
5There you shall build an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones: you shall lift up no iron on them.
6Af óhöggnum steinum skalt þú reisa altari Drottins Guðs þíns, og á því skalt þú fórna Drottni Guði þínum brennifórnum.
6You shall build the altar of Yahweh your God of uncut stones; and you shall offer burnt offerings thereon to Yahweh your God:
7Og þú skalt slátra heillafórnum og eta þær þar og gleðjast frammi fyrir Drottni Guði þínum.
7and you shall sacrifice peace offerings, and shall eat there; and you shall rejoice before Yahweh your God.
8Og þú skalt rita á steinana öll orð þessa lögmáls mjög greinilega.``
8You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”
9Móse og levítaprestarnir töluðu til alls Ísraels og sögðu: ,,Ver hljóður og hlýð á, Ísrael! Í dag ert þú orðinn lýður Drottins, Guðs þíns.
9Moses and the priests the Levites spoke to all Israel, saying, “Keep silence, and listen, Israel: this day you have become the people of Yahweh your God.
10Fyrir því skalt þú hlýða raustu Drottins Guðs þíns og halda skipanir hans og lög, sem ég legg fyrir þig í dag.``
10You shall therefore obey the voice of Yahweh your God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command you this day.”
11Þennan sama dag bauð Móse lýðnum og sagði:
11Moses commanded the people the same day, saying,
12,,Þessir skulu standa á Garísímfjalli til þess að blessa lýðinn, þegar þér eruð komnir yfir Jórdan: Símeon, Leví, Júda, Íssakar, Jósef og Benjamín.
12“These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have passed over the Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin.
13Og þessir skulu standa á Ebalfjalli til að lýsa bölvan: Rúben, Gað, Asser, Sebúlon, Dan og Naftalí.
13These shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
14Levítarnir skulu taka til máls og segja með hárri raustu við alla Ísraelsmenn:
14The Levites shall answer, and tell all the men of Israel with a loud voice,
15Bölvaður er sá maður, sem býr til skurðgoð eða steypt líkneski, andstyggð Drottni, handaverk smiðs, og reisir það á laun! Og allur lýðurinn skal svara: Amen.
15‘Cursed is the man who makes an engraved or molten image, an abomination to Yahweh, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ All the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’
16Bölvaður er sá, sem óvirðir föður sinn eða móður sína! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
16‘Cursed is he who sets light by his father or his mother.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
17Bölvaður er sá, sem færir úr stað landamerki náunga síns! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
17‘Cursed is he who removes his neighbor’s landmark.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
18Bölvaður er sá, sem leiðir blindan mann af réttri leið! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
18‘Cursed is he who makes the blind to wander out of the way.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
19Bölvaður er sá, sem hallar rétti útlends manns, munaðarleysingja eða ekkju! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
19‘Cursed is he who the foreigner, fatherless, and widow of justice.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
20Bölvaður er sá, sem leggst með konu föður síns, því að hann hefir flett upp ábreiðu föður síns! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
20‘Cursed is he who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s skirt.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
21Bölvaður er sá, sem hefir samlag við nokkra skepnu! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
21‘Cursed is he who lies with any kind of animal.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
22Bölvaður er sá, sem leggst með systur sinni, hvort heldur hún er dóttir föður hans eða dóttir móður hans! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
22‘Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
23Bölvaður er sá, sem leggst með tengdamóður sinni! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
23‘Cursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
24Bölvaður er sá, sem vegur náunga sinn á laun! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.
24‘Cursed is he who strikes his neighbor in secret.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
25Bölvaður er sá, sem lætur múta sér til þess að vega saklausan mann! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.Bölvaður er sá, sem eigi heldur í gildi orðum þessa lögmáls með því að breyta eftir þeim! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.``
25‘Cursed is he who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
26Bölvaður er sá, sem eigi heldur í gildi orðum þessa lögmáls með því að breyta eftir þeim! Og allur lýðurinn skal segja: Amen.``
26‘Cursed is he who doesn’t confirm the words of this law to do them.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’”
