¹Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: and David grew stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

²ヘブロンでダビデに男の子が生れた。彼の長子はエズレルの女アヒノアムの産んだアムノン、

²To David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

³その次はカルメルびとナバルの妻であったアビガイルの産んだキレアブ、第三はゲシュルの王タルマイの娘マアカの子アブサロム、

³and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

⁴第四はハギテの子アドニヤ、第五はアビタルの子シパテヤ、

⁴and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

⁵第六はダビデの妻エグラの産んだイテレアム。これらの子がヘブロンでダビデに生れた。

⁵and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

⁶サウルの家とダビデの家とが戦いを続けている間に、アブネルはサウルの家で、強くなってきた。

⁶It happened, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong in the house of Saul.

⁷さてサウルには、ひとりのそばめがあった。その名をリヅパといい、アヤの娘であったが、イシボセテはアブネルに言った、「あなたはなぜわたしの父のそばめのところにはいったのですか」。

⁷Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

⁸アブネルはイシボセテの言葉を聞き、非常に怒って言った、「わたしはユダの犬のかしらですか。わたしはきょう、あなたの父サウルの家と、その兄弟と、その友人とに忠誠をあらわして、あなたをダビデの手に渡すことをしなかったのに、あなたはきょう、女の事のあやまちを挙げてわたしを責められる。

⁸Then was Abner very angry for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me this day with a fault concerning this woman!

⁹主がダビデに誓われたことを、わたしが彼のためになし遂げないならば、神がアブネルをいくえにも罰しられるように。

⁹God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Yahweh has sworn to David, I don’t do even so to him;

¹⁰すなわち王国をサウルの家から移し、ダビデの位をダンからベエルシバに至るまで、イスラエルとユダの上に立たせられるであろう」。

¹⁰to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.”

¹¹イシボセテはアブネルを恐れたので、ひと言も彼に答えることができなかった。

¹¹He could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

¹²アブネルはヘブロンにいるダビデのもとに使者をつかわして言った、「国はだれのものですか。わたしと契約を結びなさい。わたしはあなたに力添えして、イスラエルをことごとくあなたのものにしましょう」。

¹²Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” and saying, “Make your alliance with me, and behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring all Israel around to you.”

¹³ダビデは言った、「よろしい。わたしは、あなたと契約を結びましょう。ただし一つの事をあなたに求めます。あなたがきてわたしの顔を見るとき、まずサウルの娘ミカルを連れて来るのでなければ、わたしの顔を見ることはできません」。

¹³He said, “Good; I will make a treaty with you; but one thing I require of you. That is, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

¹⁴それからダビデは使者をサウルの子イシボセテにつかわして言った、「ペリシテびとの陽の皮一百をもってめとったわたしの妻ミカルを引き渡しなさい」。

¹⁴David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I pledged to be married to me for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

¹⁵そこでイシボセテは人をやって彼女をその夫、ライシの子パルテエルから取ったので、

¹⁵Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.

¹⁶その夫は彼女と共に行き、泣きながら彼女のあとについて、バホリムまで行ったが、アブネルが彼に「帰って行け」と言ったので彼は帰った。

¹⁶Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.

¹⁷アブネルはイスラエルの長老たちと協議して言った、「あなたがたは以前からダビデをあなたがたの王とすることを求めていましたが、

¹⁷Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.

¹⁸今それをしなさい。主がダビデについて、『わたしのしもべダビデの手によって、わたしの民イスラエルをペリシテびとの手、およびもろもろの敵の手から救い出すであろう』と言われたからです」。

¹⁸Now then do it; for Yahweh has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’”

¹⁹アブネルはまたベニヤミンにも語った。そしてアブネルは、イスラエルとベニヤミンの全家が良いと思うことをみな、ヘブロンでダビデに告げようとして出発した。

¹⁹Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.

²⁰アブネルが二十人を従えてヘブロンにいるダビデのもとに行った時、ダビデはアブネルと彼に従っている従者たちのために酒宴を設けた。

²⁰So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

²¹アブネルはダビデに言った、「わたしは立って行き、イスラエルをことごとく、わが主、王のもとに集めて、あなたと契約を結ばせ、あなたの望むものをことごとく治められるようにいたしましょう」。こうしてダビデはアブネルを送り帰らせたので彼は安全に去って行った。

²¹Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

²²ちょうどその時、ダビデの家来たちはヨアブと共に多くのぶんどり物を携えて略奪から帰ってきた。しかしアブネルはヘブロンのダビデのもとにはいなかった。ダビデが彼を帰らせて彼が安全に去ったからである。

²²Behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

²³ヨアブおよび彼と共にいた軍勢がみな帰ってきたとき、人々はヨアブに言った、「ネルの子アブネルが王のもとにきたが、王が彼を帰らせたので彼は安全に去った」。

²³When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

²⁴そこでヨアブは王のもとに行って言った、「あなたは何をなさったのですか。アブネルがあなたの所にきたのに、あなたはどうして、彼を返し去らせられたのですか。

²⁴Then Joab came to the king, and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is quite gone?

²⁵ネルの子アブネルがあなたを欺くためにきたこと、そしてあなたの出入りを知り、またあなたのなさっていることを、ことごとく知るためにきたことをあなたはごぞんじです」。

²⁵You know Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”

²⁶ヨアブはダビデの所から出てきて、使者をつかわし、アブネルを追わせたので、彼らはシラの井戸から彼を連れて帰った。しかしダビデはその事を知らなかった。

²⁶When Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.

²⁷アブネルがヘブロンに帰ってきたとき、ヨアブはひそかに語ろうといって彼を門のうちに連れて行き、その所で彼の腹を刺して死なせ、自分の兄弟アサヘルの血を報いた。

²⁷When Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

²⁸その後ダビデはこの事を聞いて言った、「わたしとわたしの王国とは、ネルの子アブネルの血に関して、主の前に永久に罪はない。

²⁸Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahweh forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

²⁹どうぞ、その罪がヨアブの頭と、その父の全家に帰するように。またヨアブの家には流出を病む者、らい病人、つえにたよる者、つるぎに倒れる者、または食物の乏しい者が絶えないように」。

²⁹Let it fall on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

³⁰こうしてヨアブとその弟アビシャイとはアブネルを殺したが、それは彼がギベオンの戦いで彼らの兄弟アサヘルを殺したためであった。

³⁰So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

³¹ダビデはヨアブおよび自分と共にいるすべての民に言った、「あなたがたは着物を裂き、荒布をまとい、アブネルの前に嘆きながら行きなさい」。そしてダビデ王はその棺のあとに従った。

³¹David said to Joab, and to all the people who were with him, Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. King David followed the bier.

³²人々はアブネルをヘブロンに葬った。王はアブネルの墓で声をあげて泣き、民もみな泣いた。

³²They buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

³³王はアブネルのために悲しみの歌を作って言った、「愚かな人の死ぬように、アブネルがどうして死んだのか。

³³The king lamented for Abner, and said, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?

³⁴あなたの手は縛られず、足には足かせもかけられないのに、悪人の前に倒れる人のように、あなたは倒れた」。そして民は皆、ふたたび彼のために泣いた。

³⁴Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put into fetters. As a man falls before the children of iniquity, so you fell.” All the people wept again over him.

³⁵民はみなきて、日のあるうちに、ダビデにパンを食べさせようとしたが、ダビデは誓って言った、「もしわたしが日の入る前に、パンでも、ほかのものでも味わうならば、神がわたしをいくえにも罰しられるように」。

³⁵All the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, until the sun goes down.”

³⁶民はみなそれを見て満足した。すべて王のすることは民を満足させた。

³⁶All the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as whatever the king did pleased all the people.

³⁷その日すべての民およびイスラエルは皆、ネルの子アブネルを殺したのは、王の意思によるものでないことを知った。

³⁷So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to kill Abner the son of Ner.

³⁸王はその家来たちに言った、「この日イスラエルで、ひとりの偉大なる将軍が倒れたのをあなたがたは知らないのか。わたしは油を注がれた王であるけれども、今日なお弱い。ゼルヤの子であるこれらの人々はわたしの手におえない。どうぞ主が悪を行う者に、その悪にしたがって報いられるように」。

³⁸The king said to his servants, “Don’t you know that there a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

³⁹わたしは油を注がれた王であるけれども、今日なお弱い。ゼルヤの子であるこれらの人々はわたしの手におえない。どうぞ主が悪を行う者に、その悪にしたがって報いられるように」。

³⁹I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May Yahweh reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
