¹わたしの言う意味は、こうである。相続人が子供である間は、全財産の持ち主でありながら、僕となんの差別もなく、

¹But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all;

²父親の定めた時期までは、管理人や後見人の監督の下に置かれているのである。

²but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.

³それと同じく、わたしたちも子供であった時には、いわゆるこの世のもろもろの霊力の下に、縛られていた者であった。

³So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.

⁴しかし、時の満ちるに及んで、神は御子を女から生れさせ、律法の下に生れさせて、おつかわしになった。

⁴But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,

⁵それは、律法の下にある者をあがない出すため、わたしたちに子たる身分を授けるためであった。

⁵that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children.

⁶このように、あなたがたは子であるのだから、神はわたしたちの心の中に、「アバ、父よ」と呼ぶ御子の霊を送って下さったのである。

⁶And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Abba is a Greek spelling for the Aramaic word for “Father” or “Daddy” used in a familiar, respectful, and loving way. Father!”

⁷したがって、あなたがたはもはや僕ではなく、子である。子である以上、また神による相続人である。

⁷So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

⁸神を知らなかった当時、あなたがたは、本来神ならぬ神々の奴隷になっていた。

⁸However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.

⁹しかし、今では神を知っているのに、否、むしろ神に知られているのに、どうして、あの無力で貧弱な、もろもろの霊力に逆もどりして、またもや、新たにその奴隷になろうとするのか。

⁹But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?

¹⁰あなたがたは、日や月や季節や年などを守っている。

¹⁰You observe days, months, seasons, and years.

¹¹わたしは、あなたがたのために努力してきたことが、あるいは、むだになったのではないかと、あなたがたのことが心配でならない。

¹¹I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.

¹²兄弟たちよ。お願いする。どうか、わたしのようになってほしい。わたしも、あなたがたのようになったのだから。あなたがたは、一度もわたしに対して不都合なことをしたことはない。

¹²I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,

¹³あなたがたも知っているとおり、最初わたしがあなたがたに福音を伝えたのは、わたしの肉体が弱っていたためであった。

¹³but you know that because of weakness of the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.

¹⁴そして、わたしの肉体にはあなたがたにとって試錬となるものがあったのに、それを卑しめもせず、またきらいもせず、かえってわたしを、神の使かキリスト・イエスかでもあるように、迎えてくれた。

¹⁴That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn’t despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

¹⁵その時のあなたがたの感激は、今どこにあるのか。はっきり言うが、あなたがたは、できることなら、自分の目をえぐり出してでも、わたしにくれたかったのだ。

¹⁵What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

¹⁶それだのに、真理を語ったために、わたしはあなたがたの敵になったのか。

¹⁶So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

¹⁷彼らがあなたがたに対して熱心なのは、善意からではない。むしろ、自分らに熱心にならせるために、あなたがたをわたしから引き離そうとしているのである。

¹⁷They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.

¹⁸わたしがあなたがたの所にいる時だけでなく、いつも、良いことについて熱心に慕われるのは、良いことである。

¹⁸But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.

¹⁹ああ、わたしの幼な子たちよ。あなたがたの内にキリストの形ができるまでは、わたしは、またもや、あなたがたのために産みの苦しみをする。

¹⁹My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you—

²⁰できることなら、わたしは今あなたがたの所にいて、語調を変えて話してみたい。わたしは、あなたがたのことで、途方にくれている。

²⁰but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

²¹律法の下にとどまっていたいと思う人たちよ。わたしに答えなさい。あなたがたは律法の言うところを聞かないのか。

²¹Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don’t you listen to the law?

²²そのしるすところによると、アブラハムにふたりの子があったが、ひとりは女奴隷から、ひとりは自由の女から生れた。

²²For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the free woman.

²³女奴隷の子は肉によって生れたのであり、自由の女の子は約束によって生れたのであった。

²³However, the son by the handmaid was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.

²⁴さて、この物語は比喩としてみられる。すなわち、この女たちは二つの契約をさす。そのひとりはシナイ山から出て、奴隷となる者を産む。ハガルがそれである。

²⁴These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.

²⁵ハガルといえば、アラビヤではシナイ山のことで、今のエルサレムに当る。なぜなら、それは子たちと共に、奴隷となっているからである。

²⁵For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.

²⁶しかし、上なるエルサレムは、自由の女であって、わたしたちの母をさす。

²⁶But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

²⁷すなわち、こう書いてある、「喜べ、不妊の女よ。声をあげて喜べ、産みの苦しみを知らない女よ。ひとり者となっている女は多くの子を産み、その数は、夫ある女の子らよりも多い」。

²⁷For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break forth and shout, you that don’t travail. For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband.” Isaiah 54:1

²⁸兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは、イサクのように、約束の子である。

²⁸Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

²⁹しかし、その当時、肉によって生れた者が、霊によって生れた者を迫害したように、今でも同様である。

²⁹But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.

³⁰しかし、聖書はなんと言っているか。「女奴隷とその子とを追い出せ。女奴隷の子は、自由の女の子と共に相続をしてはならない」とある。だから、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは女奴隷の子ではなく、自由の女の子なのである。

³⁰However what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the handmaid and her son, for the son of the handmaid will not inherit with the son of the free woman.” Genesis 21:10

³¹だから、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは女奴隷の子ではなく、自由の女の子なのである。

³¹So then, brothers, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the free woman.
