¹わたしの兄弟たちよ。わたしたちの栄光の主イエス・キリストへの信仰を守るのに、分け隔てをしてはならない。

¹My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.

²たとえば、あなたがたの会堂に、金の指輪をはめ、りっぱな着物を着た人がはいって来ると同時に、みすぼらしい着物を着た貧しい人がはいってきたとする。

²For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue or, meeting , and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;

³その際、りっぱな着物を着た人に対しては、うやうやしく「どうぞ、こちらの良い席にお掛け下さい」と言い、貧しい人には、「あなたは、そこに立っていなさい。それとも、わたしの足もとにすわっているがよい」と言ったとしたら、

³and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, “Sit here in a good place”; and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”;

⁴あなたがたは、自分たちの間で差別立てをし、よからぬ考えで人をさばく者になったわけではないか。

⁴haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

⁵愛する兄弟たちよ。よく聞きなさい。神は、この世の貧しい人たちを選んで信仰に富ませ、神を愛する者たちに約束された御国の相続者とされたではないか。

⁵Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

⁶しかるに、あなたがたは貧しい人をはずかしめたのである。あなたがたをしいたげ、裁判所に引きずり込むのは、富んでいる者たちではないか。

⁶But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

⁷あなたがたに対して唱えられた尊い御名を汚すのは、実に彼らではないか。

⁷Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

⁸しかし、もしあなたがたが、「自分を愛するように、あなたの隣り人を愛せよ」という聖書の言葉に従って、このきわめて尊い律法を守るならば、それは良いことである。

⁸However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” Leviticus 19:18 you do well.

⁹しかし、もし分け隔てをするならば、あなたがたは罪を犯すことになり、律法によって違反者として宣告される。

⁹But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

¹⁰なぜなら、律法をことごとく守ったとしても、その一つの点にでも落ち度があれば、全体を犯したことになるからである。

¹⁰For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

¹¹たとえば、「姦淫するな」と言われたかたは、また「殺すな」とも仰せになった。そこで、たとい姦淫はしなくても、人殺しをすれば、律法の違反者になったことになる。

¹¹For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18 also said, “Do not commit murder.” Exodus 10:13; Deuteronomy 5:17 Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

¹²だから、自由の律法によってさばかるべき者らしく語り、かつ行いなさい。

¹²So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.

¹³あわれみを行わなかった者に対しては、仮借のないさばきが下される。あわれみは、さばきにうち勝つ。

¹³For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

¹⁴わたしの兄弟たちよ。ある人が自分には信仰があると称していても、もし行いがなかったら、なんの役に立つか。その信仰は彼を救うことができるか。

¹⁴What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?

¹⁵ある兄弟または姉妹が裸でいて、その日の食物にもこと欠いている場合、

¹⁵And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,

¹⁶あなたがたのうち、だれかが、「安らかに行きなさい。暖まって、食べ飽きなさい」と言うだけで、そのからだに必要なものを何ひとつ与えなかったとしたら、なんの役に立つか。

¹⁶and one of you tells them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled”; and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

¹⁷信仰も、それと同様に、行いを伴わなければ、それだけでは死んだものである。

¹⁷Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

¹⁸しかし、「ある人には信仰があり、またほかの人には行いがある」と言う者があろう。それなら、行いのないあなたの信仰なるものを見せてほしい。そうしたら、わたしの行いによって信仰を見せてあげよう。

¹⁸Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

¹⁹あなたは、神はただひとりであると信じているのか。それは結構である。悪霊どもでさえ、信じておののいている。

¹⁹You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.

²⁰ああ、愚かな人よ。行いを伴わない信仰のむなしいことを知りたいのか。

²⁰But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

²¹わたしたちの父祖アブラハムは、その子イサクを祭壇にささげた時、行いによって義とされたのではなかったか。

²¹Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

²²あなたが知っているとおり、彼においては、信仰が行いと共に働き、その行いによって信仰が全うされ、

²²You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;

²³こうして、「アブラハムは神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」という聖書の言葉が成就し、そして、彼は「神の友」と唱えられたのである。

²³and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness”; Genesis 15:6 and he was called the friend of God.

²⁴これでわかるように、人が義とされるのは、行いによるのであって、信仰だけによるのではない。

²⁴You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.

²⁵同じように、かの遊女ラハブでさえも、使者たちをもてなし、彼らを別な道から送り出した時、行いによって義とされたではないか。霊魂のないからだが死んだものであると同様に、行いのない信仰も死んだものなのである。

²⁵In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?

²⁶霊魂のないからだが死んだものであると同様に、行いのない信仰も死んだものなのである。

²⁶For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
