¹あなたがたの中の戦いや争いは、いったい、どこから起るのか。それはほかではない。あなたがたの肢体の中で相戦う欲情からではないか。

¹Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?

²あなたがたは、むさぼるが得られない。そこで人殺しをする。熱望するが手に入れることができない。そこで争い戦う。あなたがたは、求めないから得られないのだ。

²You lust, and don’t have. You kill, covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask.

³求めても与えられないのは、快楽のために使おうとして、悪い求め方をするからだ。

³You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.

⁴不貞のやからよ。世を友とするのは、神への敵対であることを、知らないか。おおよそ世の友となろうと思う者は、自らを神の敵とするのである。

⁴You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

⁵それとも、「神は、わたしたちの内に住まわせた霊を、ねたむほどに愛しておられる」と聖書に書いてあるのは、むなしい言葉だと思うのか。

⁵Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?

⁶しかし神は、いや増しに恵みを賜う。であるから、「神は高ぶる者をしりぞけ、へりくだる者に恵みを賜う」とある。

⁶But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Proverbs 3:34

⁷そういうわけだから、神に従いなさい。そして、悪魔に立ちむかいなさい。そうすれば、彼はあなたがたから逃げ去るであろう。

⁷Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

⁸神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいて下さるであろう。罪人どもよ、手をきよめよ。二心の者どもよ、心を清くせよ。

⁸Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

⁹苦しめ、悲しめ、泣け。あなたがたの笑いを悲しみに、喜びを憂いに変えよ。

⁹Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom.

¹⁰主のみまえにへりくだれ。そうすれば、主は、あなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。

¹⁰Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

¹¹兄弟たちよ。互に悪口を言い合ってはならない。兄弟の悪口を言ったり、自分の兄弟をさばいたりする者は、律法をそしり、律法をさばくやからである。もしあなたが律法をさばくなら、律法の実行者ではなくて、その審判者なのである。

¹¹Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.

¹²しかし、立法者であり審判者であるかたは、ただひとりであって、救うことも滅ぼすこともできるのである。しかるに、隣り人をさばくあなたは、いったい、何者であるか。

¹²Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?

¹³よく聞きなさい。「きょうか、あす、これこれの町へ行き、そこに一か年滞在し、商売をして一もうけしよう」と言う者たちよ。

¹³Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”

¹⁴あなたがたは、あすのこともわからぬ身なのだ。あなたがたのいのちは、どんなものであるか。あなたがたは、しばしの間あらわれて、たちまち消え行く霧にすぎない。

¹⁴Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

¹⁵むしろ、あなたがたは「主のみこころであれば、わたしは生きながらえもし、あの事この事もしよう」と言うべきである。

¹⁵For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”

¹⁶ところが、あなたがたは誇り高ぶっている。このような高慢は、すべて悪である。人が、なすべき善を知りながら行わなければ、それは彼にとって罪である。

¹⁶But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.

¹⁷人が、なすべき善を知りながら行わなければ、それは彼にとって罪である。

¹⁷To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.
