¹その日モーセの書を読んで民に聞かせたが、その中にアンモンびと、およびモアブびとは、いつまでも神の会に、はいってはならないとしるされているのを見いだした。

¹On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

²これは彼らがかつて、パンと水をもってイスラエルの人々を迎えず、かえってこれをのろわせるためにバラムを雇ったからである。しかしわれわれの神はそののろいを変えて祝福とされた。

²because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: however our God turned the curse into a blessing.

³人々はこの律法を聞いた時、混血の民をことごとくイスラエルから分け離した。

³It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

⁴これより先、われわれの神の宮のへやをつかさどっていた祭司エリアシブは、トビヤと縁組したので、

⁴Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

⁵トビヤのために大きなへやを備えた。そのへやはもと、素祭の物、乳香、器物および規定によってレビびと、歌うたう者および門を守る者たちに与える穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一、ならびに祭司のためのささげ物を置いた所である。

⁵had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the wave offerings for the priests.

⁶その当時、わたしはエルサレムにいなかった。わたしはバビロンの王アルタシャスタの三十二年に王の所へ行ったが、しばらくたって王にいとまを請い、

⁶But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king,

⁷エルサレムに来て、エリアシブがトビヤのためにした悪事、すなわち彼のために神の宮の庭に一つのへやを備えたことを発見した。

⁷and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

⁸わたしは非常に怒り、トビヤの家の器物をことごとくそのへやから投げだし、

⁸It grieved me severely: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room.

⁹命じて、すべてのへやを清めさせ、そして神の宮の器物および素祭、乳香などを再びそこに携え入れた。

⁹Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense.

¹⁰わたしはまたレビびとがその受くべき分を与えられていなかったことを知った。これがためにその務をなすレビびとおよび歌うたう者たちは、おのおの自分の畑に逃げ帰った。

¹⁰I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field.

¹¹それでわたしはつかさたちを責めて言った、「なぜ神の宮を捨てさせたのか」。そしてレビびとを招き集めて、その持ち場に復帰させた。

¹¹Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

¹²そこでユダの人々は皆、穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一を倉に携えてきた。

¹²Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.

¹³わたしは祭司シレミヤ、学者ザドクおよびレビびとペダヤを倉のつかさとし、またマッタニヤの子ザックルの子ハナンをその助手として倉をつかさどらせた。彼らは忠実な者と思われたからである。彼らの任務は兄弟たちに分配する事であった。

¹³I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

¹⁴わが神よ、この事のためにわたしを覚えてください。わが神の宮とその勤めのためにわたしが行った良きわざをぬぐい去らないでください。

¹⁴Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

¹⁵そのころわたしはユダのうちで安息日に酒ぶねを踏む者、麦束を持ってきて、ろばに負わす者、またぶどう酒、ぶどう、いちじくおよびさまざまの荷を安息日にエルサレムに運び入れる者を見たので、わたしは彼らが食物を売っていたその日に彼らを戒めた。

¹⁵In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

¹⁶そこに住んでいたツロの人々もまた魚およびさまざまの品物を持ってきて、安息日にユダの人々に売り、エルサレムで商売した。

¹⁶There lived men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

¹⁷そこでわたしはユダの尊い人々を責めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜこの悪事を行って、安息日を汚すのか。

¹⁷Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

¹⁸あなたがたの先祖も、このように行ったので、われわれの神はこのすべての災を、われわれとこの町に下されたではないか。ところがあなたがたは安息日を汚して、さらに大いなる怒りをイスラエルの上に招くのである」。

¹⁸Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

¹⁹そこで安息日の前に、エルサレムのもろもろの門が暗くなり始めた時、わたしは命じてそのとびらを閉じさせ、安息日が終るまでこれを開いてはならないと命じ、わたしのしもべ数人を門に置いて、安息日に荷を携え入れさせないようにした。

¹⁹It came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

²⁰これがために、商人およびさまざまの品物を売る者どもは一、二回エルサレムの外に宿った。

²⁰So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

²¹わたしは彼らを戒めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜ城壁の前に宿るのか。もしあなたがたが重ねてそのようなことをするならば、わたしはあなたがたを処罰する」と。そのとき以来、彼らは安息日にはこなかった。

²¹Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

²²わたしはまたレビびとに命じて、その身を清めさせ、来て門を守らせて、安息日を聖別した。わが神よ、わたしのためにまた、このことを覚え、あなたの大いなるいつくしみをもって、わたしをあわれんでください。

²²I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

²³そのころまた、わたしはアシドド、アンモン、モアブの女をめとったユダヤ人を見た。

²³In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

²⁴彼らの子供の半分はアシドドの言葉を語って、ユダヤの言葉を語ることができず、おのおのその母親の出た民の言葉を語った。

²⁴and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

²⁵わたしは彼らを責め、またののしり、そのうちの数人を撃って、その毛を抜き、神の名をさして誓わせて言った、「あなたがたは彼らのむすこに自分の娘を与えてはならない。またあなたがたのむすこ、またはあなたがた自身のために彼らの娘をめとってはならない。

²⁵I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁶イスラエルの王ソロモンはこれらのことによって罪を犯したではないか。彼のような王は多くの国民のうちにもなく、神に愛せられた者である。神は彼をイスラエル全国の王とせられた。ところが異邦の女たちは彼に罪を犯させた。

²⁶Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

²⁷それゆえあなたがたが異邦の女をめとり、このすべての大いなる悪を行って、われわれの神に罪を犯すのを、われわれは聞き流しにしておけようか」。

²⁷Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

²⁸大祭司エリアシブの子ヨイアダのひとりの子はホロニびとサンバラテの婿であったので、わたしは彼をわたしのところから追い出した。

²⁸One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

²⁹わが神よ、彼らのことを覚えてください。彼らは祭司の職を汚し、また祭司およびレビびとの契約を汚しました。

²⁹Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

³⁰このように、わたしは彼らを清めて、異邦のものをことごとく捨てさせ、祭司およびレビびとの務を定めて、おのおのそのわざにつかせた。また定められた時に、たきぎの供え物をささげさせ、また初物をささげさせた。わが神よ、わたしを覚え、わたしをお恵みください。

³⁰Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

³¹また定められた時に、たきぎの供え物をささげさせ、また初物をささげさせた。わが神よ、わたしを覚え、わたしをお恵みください。

³¹and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
