¹そこで、会衆はみな声をあげて叫び、民はその夜、泣き明かした。

¹All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

²またイスラエルの人々はみなモーセとアロンにむかってつぶやき、全会衆は彼らに言った、「ああ、わたしたちはエジプトの国で死んでいたらよかったのに。この荒野で死んでいたらよかったのに。

²All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!

³なにゆえ、主はわたしたちをこの地に連れてきて、つるぎに倒れさせ、またわたしたちの妻子をえじきとされるのであろうか。エジプトに帰る方が、むしろ良いではないか」。

³Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”

⁴彼らは互に言った、「わたしたちはひとりのかしらを立てて、エジプトに帰ろう」。

⁴They said one to another, “Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”

⁵そこで、モーセとアロンはイスラエルの人々の全会衆の前でひれふした。

⁵Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶このとき、その地を探った者のうちのヌンの子ヨシュアとエフンネの子カレブは、その衣服を裂き、

⁶Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

⁷イスラエルの人々の全会衆に言った、「わたしたちが行き巡って探った地は非常に良い地です。

⁷and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

⁸もし、主が良しとされるならば、わたしたちをその地に導いて行って、それをわたしたちにくださるでしょう。それは乳と蜜の流れている地です。

⁸If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

⁹ただ、主にそむいてはなりません。またその地の民を恐れてはなりません。彼らはわたしたちの食い物にすぎません。彼らを守る者は取り除かれます。主がわたしたちと共におられますから、彼らを恐れてはなりません」。

⁹Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”

¹⁰ところが会衆はみな石で彼らを撃ち殺そうとした。そのとき、主の栄光が、会見の幕屋からイスラエルのすべての人に現れた。

¹⁰But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. The glory of Yahweh appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

¹¹主はモーセに言われた、「この民はいつまでわたしを侮るのか。わたしがもろもろのしるしを彼らのうちに行ったのに、彼らはいつまでわたしを信じないのか。

¹¹Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

¹²わたしは疫病をもって彼らを撃ち滅ぼし、あなたを彼らよりも大いなる強い国民としよう」。

¹²I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

¹³モーセは主に言った、「エジプトびとは、あなたが力をもって、この民を彼らのうちから導き出されたことを聞いて、

¹³Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them;

¹⁴この地の住民に告げるでしょう。彼らは、主なるあなたが、この民のうちにおられ、主なるあなたが、まのあたり現れ、あなたの雲が、彼らの上にとどまり、昼は雲の柱のうちに、夜は火の柱のうちにあって、彼らの前に行かれるのを聞いたのです。

¹⁴and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are in the midst of this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵いま、もし、あなたがこの民をひとり残らず殺されるならば、あなたのことを聞いた国民は語って、

¹⁵Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

¹⁶『主は与えると誓った地に、この民を導き入れることができなかったため、彼らを荒野で殺したのだ』と言うでしょう。

¹⁶‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’

¹⁷どうぞ、あなたが約束されたように、いま主の大いなる力を現してください。

¹⁷Now please let the power of the Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” be great, according as you have spoken, saying,

¹⁸あなたはかつて、『主は怒ることおそく、いつくしみに富み、罪ととがをゆるす者、しかし、罰すべき者は、決してゆるさず、父の罪を子に報いて、三、四代に及ぼす者である』と言われました。

¹⁸‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’

¹⁹どうぞ、あなたの大いなるいつくしみによって、エジプトからこのかた、今にいたるまで、この民をゆるされたように、この民の罪をおゆるしください」。

¹⁹Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

²⁰主は言われた、「わたしはあなたの言葉のとおりにゆるそう。

²⁰Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word:

²¹しかし、わたしは生きている。また主の栄光が、全世界に満ちている。

²¹but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh;

²²わたしの栄光と、わたしがエジプトと荒野で行ったしるしを見ながら、このように十度もわたしを試みて、わたしの声に聞きしたがわなかった人々はひとりも、

²²because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;

²³わたしがかつて彼らの先祖たちに与えると誓った地を見ないであろう。またわたしを侮った人々も、それを見ないであろう。

²³surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it:

²⁴but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.

²⁵Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds .”

²⁶Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²⁷「わたしにむかってつぶやくこの悪い会衆をいつまで忍ぶことができようか。わたしはイスラエルの人々が、わたしにむかってつぶやくのを聞いた。

²⁷“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

²⁸あなたは彼らに言いなさい、『主は言われる、「わたしは生きている。あなたがたが、わたしの耳に語ったように、わたしはあなたがたにするであろう。

²⁸Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

²⁹あなたがたは死体となって、この荒野に倒れるであろう。あなたがたのうち、わたしにむかってつぶやいた者、すなわち、すべて数えられた二十歳以上の者はみな倒れるであろう。

²⁹your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

³⁰エフンネの子カレブと、ヌンの子ヨシュアのほかは、わたしがかつて、あなたがたを住まわせようと、手をあげて誓った地に、はいることができないであろう。

³⁰surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

³¹しかし、あなたがたが、えじきになるであろうと言ったあなたがたの子供は、わたしが導いて、はいるであろう。彼らはあなたがたが、いやしめた地を知るようになるであろう。

³¹But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.

³²しかしあなたがたは死体となってこの荒野に倒れるであろう。

³²But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

³³あなたがたの子たちは、あなたがたの死体が荒野に朽ち果てるまで四十年のあいだ、荒野で羊飼となり、あなたがたの不信の罪を負うであろう。

³³Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.

³⁴あなたがたは、かの地を探った四十日の日数にしたがい、その一日を一年として、四十年のあいだ、自分の罪を負い、わたしがあなたがたを遠ざかったことを知るであろう」。

³⁴After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’

³⁵主なるわたしがこれを言う。わたしは必ずわたしに逆らって集まったこの悪い会衆に、これをことごとく行うであろう。彼らはこの荒野に朽ち、ここで死ぬであろう』」。

³⁵I, Yahweh, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”

³⁶こうして、モーセにつかわされ、かの地を探りに行き、帰ってきて、その地を悪く言い、全会衆を、モーセにむかって、つぶやかせた人々、

³⁶The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,

³⁷すなわち、その地を悪く言いふらした人々は、疫病にかかって主の前に死んだが、

³⁷even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.

³⁸その地を探りに行った人々のうち、ヌンの子ヨシュアと、エフンネの子カレブとは生き残った。

³⁸But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

³⁹モーセが、これらのことを、イスラエルのすべての人々に告げたとき、民は非常に悲しみ、

³⁹Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

⁴⁰朝早く起きて山の頂きに登って言った、「わたしたちはここにいる。さあ、主が約束された所へ上って行こう。わたしたちは罪を犯したのだから」。

⁴⁰They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned.”

⁴¹モーセは言った、「あなたがたは、それをなし遂げることもできないのに、どうして、そのように主の命にそむくのか。

⁴¹Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?

⁴²あなたがたは上って行ってはならない。主があなたがたのうちにおられないから、あなたがたは敵の前に、撃ち破られるであろう。

⁴²Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies.

⁴³そこには、アマレクびとと、カナンびとがあなたがたの前にいるから、あなたがたは、つるぎに倒れるであろう。あなたがたがそむいて、主に従わなかったゆえ、主はあなたがたと共におられないからである」。

⁴³For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”

⁴⁴しかし、彼らは、ほしいままに山の頂に登った。ただし、主の契約の箱と、モーセとは、宿営の中から出なかった。そこで、その山に住んでいたアマレクびとと、カナンびとが下ってきて、彼らを撃ち破り、ホルマまで追ってきた。

⁴⁴But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, didn’t depart out of the camp.

⁴⁵そこで、その山に住んでいたアマレクびとと、カナンびとが下ってきて、彼らを撃ち破り、ホルマまで追ってきた。

⁴⁵Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.
