¹バラムはバラクに言った、「わたしのために、ここに七つの祭壇を築き、七頭の雄牛と七頭の雄羊とを整えなさい」。

¹Balaam said to Balak, “Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bulls and seven rams.”

²バラクはバラムの言ったとおりにした。そしてバラクとバラムとは、その祭壇ごとに雄牛一頭と雄羊一頭とをささげた。

²Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bull and a ram.

³バラムはバラクに言った、「あなたは燔祭のかたわらに立っていてください。その間にわたしは行ってきます。主はたぶんわたしに会ってくださるでしょう。そして、主がわたしに示される事はなんでもあなたに告げましょう」。こうして彼は一つのはげ山に登った。

³Balaam said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go: perhaps Yahweh will come to meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you.” He went to a bare height.

⁴神がバラムに会われたので、バラムは神に言った、「わたしは七つの祭壇を設け、祭壇ごとに雄牛一頭と雄羊一頭とをささげました」。

⁴God met Balaam: and he said to him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.”

⁵主はバラムの口に言葉を授けて言われた、「バラクのもとに帰ってこう言いなさい」。

⁵Yahweh put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”

⁶彼がバラクのもとに帰ってみると、バラクはモアブのすべてのつかさたちと共に燔祭のかたわらに立っていた。

⁶He returned to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

⁷バラムはこの託宣を述べた。「バラクはわたしをアラムから招き寄せ、モアブの王はわたしを東の山から招き寄せて言う、『きてわたしのためにヤコブをのろえ、きてイスラエルをのろえ』と。

⁷He took up his parable, and said, “From Aram has Balak brought me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East. Come, curse Jacob for me. Come, defy Israel.

⁸神ののろわない者を、わたしがどうしてのろえよう。主ののろわない者を、わたしがどうしてのろえよう。

⁸How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? How shall I defy whom Yahweh has not defied?

⁹岩の頂からながめ、丘の上から見たが、これはひとり離れて住む民、もろもろの国民のうちに並ぶものはない。

⁹For from the top of the rocks I see him. From the hills I see him. Behold, it is a people that dwells alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

¹⁰だれがヤコブの群衆を数え、イスラエルの無数の民を数え得よう。わたしは義人のように死に、わたしの終りは彼らの終りのようでありたい」。

¹⁰Who can count the dust of Jacob, or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous! Let my last end be like his!”

¹¹そこでバラクはバラムに言った、「あなたはわたしに何をするのですか。わたしは敵をのろうために、あなたを招いたのに、あなたはかえって敵を祝福するばかりです」。

¹¹Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them altogether.”

¹²バラムは答えた、「わたしは、主がわたしの口に授けられる事だけを語るように注意すべきではないでしょうか」。

¹²He answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak that which Yahweh puts in my mouth?”

¹³バラクは彼に言った、「わたしと一緒にほかのところへ行って、そこから彼らをごらんください。あなたはただ彼らの一端を見るだけで、全体を見ることはできないでしょうが、そこからわたしのために彼らをのろってください」。

¹³Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, where you may see them; you shall see but the utmost part of them, and shall not see them all: and curse me them from there.”

¹⁴そして彼はバラムを連れてゾピムの野に行き、ピスガの頂に登って、そこに七つの祭壇を築き、祭壇ごとに雄牛一頭と雄羊一頭とをささげた。

¹⁴He took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.

¹⁵ときにはバラムはバラクに言った、「あなたはここで、燔祭のかたわらに立っていてください。わたしは向こうへ行って、主に伺いますから」。

¹⁵He said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I meet over there.”

¹⁶主はバラムに臨み、言葉を口に授けて言われた、「バラクのもとに帰ってこう言いなさい」。

¹⁶Yahweh met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and say this.”

¹⁷彼がバラクのところへ行って見ると、バラクは燔祭のかたわらに立ち、モアブのつかさたちも共にいた。バラクはバラムに言った、「主はなんと言われましたか」。

¹⁷He came to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. Balak said to him, “What has Yahweh spoken?”

¹⁸そこでバラムはまたこの託宣を述べた。「バラクよ、立って聞け、チッポルの子よ、わたしに耳を傾けよ。

¹⁸He took up his parable, and said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear! Listen to me, you son of Zippor.

¹⁹神は人のように偽ることはなく、また人の子のように悔いることもない。言ったことで、行わないことがあろうか、語ったことで、しとげないことがあろうか。

¹⁹God is not a man, that he should lie, nor the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

²⁰祝福せよとの命をわたしはうけた、すでに神が祝福されたものを、わたしは変えることができない。

²⁰Behold, I have received a command to bless. He has blessed, and I can’t reverse it.

²¹だれもヤコブのうちに災のあるのを見ない、またイスラエルのうちに悩みのあるのを見ない。彼らの神、主が共にいまし、王をたたえる声がその中に聞える。

²¹He has not seen iniquity in Jacob. Neither has he seen perverseness in Israel. Yahweh his God is with him. The shout of a king is among them.

²²神は彼らをエジプトから導き出された、彼らは野牛の角のようだ。

²²God brings them out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.

²³ヤコブには魔術がなく、イスラエルには占いがない。神がそのなすところを時に応じてヤコブに告げ、イスラエルに示されるからだ。

²³Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob; Neither is there any divination with Israel. Now it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What has God done!

²⁴見よ、この民は雌じしのように立ち上がり、雄じしのように身を起す。これはその獲物を食らい、その殺した者の血を飲むまでは身を横たえない」。

²⁴Behold, the people rises up as a lioness, As a lion he lifts himself up. He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.”

²⁵バラクはバラムに言った、「あなたは彼らをのろうことも祝福することも、やめてください」。

²⁵Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.”

²⁶バラムは答えてバラクに言った、「主の言われることは、なんでもしなければならないと、わたしはあなたに告げませんでしたか」。

²⁶But Balaam answered Balak, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘All that Yahweh speaks, that I must do?’”

²⁷バラクはバラムに言った、「どうぞ、おいでください。わたしはあなたをほかの所へお連れしましょう。神はあなたがそこからわたしのために彼らをのろうことを許されるかもしれません」。

²⁷Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse me them from there.”

²⁸そしてバラクはバラムを連れて、荒野を見おろすペオルの頂に行った。

²⁸Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks down on the desert.
