¹わたしはキリストにあって真実を語る。偽りは言わない。わたしの良心も聖霊によって、わたしにこうあかしをしている。

¹I tell the truth in Christ. I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit,

²すなわち、わたしに大きな悲しみがあり、わたしの心に絶えざる痛みがある。

²that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.

³実際、わたしの兄弟、肉による同族のためなら、わたしのこの身がのろわれて、キリストから離されてもいとわない。

³For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers’ sake, my relatives according to the flesh,

⁴彼らはイスラエル人であって、子たる身分を授けられることも、栄光も、もろもろの契約も、律法を授けられることも、礼拝も、数々の約束も彼らのもの、

⁴who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises;

⁵また父祖たちも彼らのものであり、肉によればキリストもまた彼らから出られたのである。万物の上にいます神は、永遠にほむべきかな、アァメン。

⁵of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God, blessed forever. Amen.

⁶しかし、神の言が無効になったというわけではない。なぜなら、イスラエルから出た者が全部イスラエルなのではなく、

⁶But it is not as though the word of God has come to nothing. For they are not all Israel, that are of Israel.

⁷また、アブラハムの子孫だからといって、その全部が子であるのではないからである。かえって「イサクから出る者が、あなたの子孫と呼ばれるであろう」。

⁷Neither, because they are Abraham’s seed, are they all children. But, “In Isaac will your seed be called.” Genesis 21:12

⁸すなわち、肉の子がそのまま神の子なのではなく、むしろ約束の子が子孫として認められるのである。

⁸That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as a seed.

⁹約束の言葉はこうである。「来年の今ごろ、わたしはまた来る。そして、サラに男子が与えられるであろう」。

⁹For this is a word of promise, “At the appointed time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.” Genesis 18:10,14

¹⁰そればかりではなく、ひとりの人、すなわち、わたしたちの父祖イサクによって受胎したリベカの場合も、また同様である。

¹⁰Not only so, but Rebecca also conceived by one, by our father Isaac.

¹¹まだ子供らが生れもせず、善も悪もしない先に、神の選びの計画が、

¹¹For being not yet born, neither having done anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him who calls, NA puts the phrase “not of works, but of him who calls” at the beginning of verse 12 instead of the end of verse 11.

¹²わざによらず、召したかたによって行われるために、「兄は弟に仕えるであろう」と、彼女に仰せられたのである。

¹²it was said to her, “The elder will serve the younger.” Genesis 25:23

¹³「わたしはヤコブを愛しエサウを憎んだ」と書いてあるとおりである。

¹³Even as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” Malachi 1:2-3

¹⁴では、わたしたちはなんと言おうか。神の側に不正があるのか。断じてそうではない。

¹⁴What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? May it never be!

¹⁵神はモーセに言われた、「わたしは自分のあわれもうとする者をあわれみ、いつくしもうとする者を、いつくしむ」。

¹⁵For he said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Exodus 33:19

¹⁶ゆえに、それは人間の意志や努力によるのではなく、ただ神のあわれみによるのである。

¹⁶So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy.

¹⁷聖書はパロにこう言っている、「わたしがあなたを立てたのは、この事のためである。すなわち、あなたによってわたしの力をあらわし、また、わたしの名が全世界に言いひろめられるためである」。

¹⁷For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I caused you to be raised up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Exodus 9:16

¹⁸だから、神はそのあわれもうと思う者をあわれみ、かたくなにしようと思う者を、かたくなになさるのである。

¹⁸So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.

¹⁹そこで、あなたは言うであろう、「なぜ神は、なおも人を責められるのか。だれが、神の意図に逆らい得ようか」。

¹⁹You will say then to me, “Why does he still find fault? For who withstands his will?”

²⁰ああ人よ。あなたは、神に言い逆らうとは、いったい、何者なのか。造られたものが造った者に向かって、「なぜ、わたしをこのように造ったのか」と言うことがあろうか。

²⁰But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed ask him who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” Isaiah 29:16; 45:9

²¹陶器を造る者は、同じ土くれから、一つを尊い器に、他を卑しい器に造りあげる権能がないのであろうか。

²¹Or hasn’t the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel for honor, and another for dishonor?

²²もし、神が怒りをあらわし、かつ、ご自身の力を知らせようと思われつつも、滅びることになっている怒りの器を、大いなる寛容をもって忍ばれたとすれば、

²²What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath made for destruction,

²³かつ、栄光にあずからせるために、あらかじめ用意されたあわれみの器にご自身の栄光の富を知らせようとされたとすれば、どうであろうか。

²³and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory,

²⁴神は、このあわれみの器として、またわたしたちをも、ユダヤ人の中からだけではなく、異邦人の中からも召されたのである。

²⁴us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?

²⁵それは、ホセアの書でも言われているとおりである、「わたしは、わたしの民でない者を、わたしの民と呼び、愛されなかった者を、愛される者と呼ぶであろう。

²⁵As he says also in Hosea, “I will call them ‘my people,’ which were not my people; and her ‘beloved,’ who was not beloved.” Hosea 2:23

²⁶あなたがたはわたしの民ではないと、彼らに言ったその場所で、彼らは生ける神の子らであると、呼ばれるであろう」。

²⁶“It will be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ There they will be called ‘children of the living God.’” Hosea 1:10

²⁷また、イザヤはイスラエルについて叫んでいる、「たとい、イスラエルの子らの数は、浜の砂のようであっても、救われるのは、残された者だけであろう。

²⁷Isaiah cries concerning Israel, “If the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant who will be saved;

²⁸主は、御言をきびしくまたすみやかに、地上になしとげられるであろう」。

²⁸for He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the LORD will make a short work upon the earth.” Isaiah 10:22-23

²⁹さらに、イザヤは預言した、「もし、万軍の主がわたしたちに子孫を残されなかったなら、わたしたちはソドムのようになり、ゴモラと同じようになったであろう」。

²⁹As Isaiah has said before, “Unless the Lord of Armies Greek: Sabaoth (for Hebrew: Tze’va’ot) had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and would have been made like Gomorrah.” Isaiah 1:9

³⁰では、わたしたちはなんと言おうか。義を追い求めなかった異邦人は、義、すなわち、信仰による義を得た。

³⁰What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who didn’t follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith;

³¹しかし、義の律法を追い求めていたイスラエルは、その律法に達しなかった。

³¹but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at the law of righteousness.

³²なぜであるか。信仰によらないで、行いによって得られるかのように、追い求めたからである。彼らは、つまずきの石につまずいたのである。「見よ、わたしはシオンに、つまずきの石、さまたげの岩を置く。それにより頼む者は、失望に終ることがない」と書いてあるとおりである。

³²Why? Because they didn’t seek it by faith, but as it were by works of the law. They stumbled over the stumbling stone;

³³「見よ、わたしはシオンに、つまずきの石、さまたげの岩を置く。それにより頼む者は、失望に終ることがない」と書いてあるとおりである。

³³even as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock of offense; and no one who believes in him will be disappointed.” Isaiah 8:14; 28:16
