¹あなたは彼らに勧めて、支配者、権威ある者に服し、これに従い、いつでも良いわざをする用意があり、

¹Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

²だれをもそしらず、争わず、寛容であって、すべての人に対してどこまでも柔和な態度を示すべきことを、思い出させなさい。

²to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men.

³わたしたちも以前には、無分別で、不従順な、迷っていた者であって、さまざまの情欲と快楽との奴隷になり、悪意とねたみとで日を過ごし、人に憎まれ、互に憎み合っていた。

³For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

⁴ところが、わたしたちの救主なる神の慈悲と博愛とが現れたとき、

⁴But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared,

⁵わたしたちの行った義のわざによってではなく、ただ神のあわれみによって、再生の洗いを受け、聖霊により新たにされて、わたしたちは救われたのである。

⁵not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

⁶この聖霊は、わたしたちの救主イエス・キリストをとおして、わたしたちの上に豊かに注がれた。

⁶whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior;

⁷これは、わたしたちが、キリストの恵みによって義とされ、永遠のいのちを望むことによって、御国をつぐ者となるためである。

⁷that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

⁸この言葉は確実である。わたしは、あなたがそれらのことを主張するのを願っている。それは、神を信じている者たちが、努めて良いわざを励むことを心がけるようになるためである。これは良いことであって、人々の益となる。

⁸This saying is faithful, and concerning these things I desire that you affirm confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men;

⁹しかし、愚かな議論と、系図と、争いと、律法についての論争とを、避けなさい。それらは無益かつ空虚なことである。

⁹but shun foolish questionings, genealogies, strife, and disputes about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

¹⁰異端者は、一、二度、訓戒を加えた上で退けなさい。

¹⁰Avoid a factious man after a first and second warning;

¹¹たしかに、こういう人たちは、邪道に陥り、自ら悪と知りつつも、罪を犯しているからである。

¹¹knowing that such a one is perverted, and sins, being self-condemned.

¹²わたしがアルテマスかテキコかをあなたのところに送ったなら、急いでニコポリにいるわたしの所にきなさい。わたしは、そこで冬を過ごすことにした。

¹²When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicus, be diligent to come to me to Nicopolis, for I have determined to winter there.

¹³法学者ゼナスと、アポロとを、急いで旅につかせ、不自由のないようにしてあげなさい。

¹³Send Zenas, the lawyer, and Apollos on their journey speedily, that nothing may be lacking for them.

¹⁴わたしたちの仲間も、さし迫った必要に備えて、努めて良いわざを励み、実を結ばぬ者とならないように、心がけるべきである。わたしと共にいる一同の者から、あなたによろしく。わたしたちを愛している信徒たちに、よろしく。恵みが、あなたがた一同と共にあるように。

¹⁴Let our people also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they may not be unfruitful.
