¹त्याचप्रमाणे, पत्नींनो, आपल्या पतींच्या अधीन असा. यासाठी की, त्यांच्यापैकी काहींनी जर देवाची आज्ञा पाळली नाही तर काही न बोलताही आपल्या सदवर्तनाने त्यांची मने जिंकता येतील.

¹In like manner, the wives, be ye subject to your own husbands, that even if certain are disobedient to the word, through the conversation of the wives, without the word, they may be won,

²जेव्हा ते तुमचे शुद्ध आणि आदरयुक्त वागणे पाहतील

²having beheld your pure behaviour in fear,

³तुमची सुंदरता बाह्यस्वरुपाची नसावी म्हणजे वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारे केस सुशोभित करण्याने, सोन्याचे दागिने वापरण्याने किंवा चांगले कपडे घातल्याने आलेली नसावी.

³whose adorning — let it not be that which is outward, of plaiting of hair, and of putting around of things of gold, or of putting on of garments,

⁴त्याऐवजी तुमची सुंदरता अंत:करणाची, जी कधीही नाश पावत नाही, अशी असली पाहिजे ती सौम्य, शांत स्वभावाची असली पाहिजे जी देवाच्या दृष्टीने अतिमौल्यवान आहे.

⁴but — the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible thing of the meek and quiet spirit, which is, before God, of great price,

⁵पूर्वीच्या काळतील ज्या पवित्र स्त्रिया होऊन गेल्या, त्यांनी अशाच प्रकारे आपल्या सर्व आशा देवावर केन्द्रीत करुन आपली स्वत:ची सुंदरता वाढीस लावली त्या स्त्रिया आपल्या पतींच्या अधीन असत.

⁵for thus once also the holy women who did hope on God, were adorning themselves, being subject to their own husbands,

⁶साराने अब्राहामाची आज्ञा पाळली आणि अब्राहामाला आपला मालक मानले. जर तुम्ही चांगली कामे करता व कशाचीही भिति मनात बाळगत नाही तर तुम्ही तिच्या म्हणजे सारेच्या मुली आहात.

⁶as Sarah was obedient to Abraham, calling him `sir,` of whom ye did become daughters, doing good, and not fearing any terror.

⁷तसेच पतींनो, तुम्ही आपल्या पत्नींबरोबर समंजसपणाने राहा. त्या जरी अबला असल्या तरी त्या देवाच्या कृपेमध्ये तुमच्याबरोबरच वारस आहेत हे लक्षात घेऊन त्यांच्याविषयी आदर बाळग, म्हणजे तुम्ही ज्या प्रार्थना देवाला सादर करता त्यात कसलीही बाधा येणार नाही.

⁷The husbands, in like manner, dwelling with [them], according to knowledge, as to a weaker vessel — to the wife — imparting honour, as also being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered.

⁸शेवटी सारांश हा की, तुम्ही सर्वजण एकमेकांशी विचार व भावना यांच्या ऐक्याने, सहानुभूतीने आपल्या भाऊबहिणींशी प्रेमाने, दयाळूपणे आणि नम्रतेने राहा.

⁸And finally, being all of one mind, having fellow-feeling, loving as brethren, compassionate, courteous,

⁹वाइटाची परतफेड वाइटाने करु नका, किंवा अपमानाची फेड अपमानाने करु नका. उलट, त्या व्यक्तीसाठी देवाकडे आशीर्वाद मागा. कारण देवाने तुम्हाला हे करण्यासाठीच बोलाविले होते. यासाठी की, तुम्हाला देवाचा आशीर्वादाचा वारसा मिळावा.

⁹not giving back evil for evil, or railing for railing, and on the contrary, blessing, having known that to this ye were called, that a blessing ye may inherit;

¹⁰पवित्र शास्त्र म्हणते, “ज्याला जीवनाचा आनंद उपभोगायचा आहे, व चांगले दिवस पहावयाचे आहेत, त्याने आपली जीभ वाईट बोलण्यापासून आवरली पाहिजे, आणि त्याने आपल्या ओठांनी खोट्या गोष्टी बोलू नयेत.

¹⁰for `he who is willing to love life, and to see good days, let him guard his tongue from evil, and his lips — not to speak guile;

¹¹दुष्टतेपासून त्याने दूर व्हावे व चांगले ते करावे. त्याने शांतीचा शोध करुन ती मिळविली पाहिजे

¹¹let him turn aside from evil, and do good, let him seek peace and pursue it;

¹²जे नीतिमान लोक आहेत त्यांच्यावर प्रभुची नजर असते आणि त्यांच्या प्रार्थना तो कान देऊन ऐकतो पण जे वाईट गोष्टी करतात त्यांच्याकडे प्रभु पाठ फिरवितो.” स्तोत्र. 34:12-16

¹²because the eyes of the Lord [are] upon the righteous, and His ears — to their supplication, and the face of the Lord [is] upon those doing evil;`

¹³जे चांगले ते करण्यास तुम्ही उत्सुक असाल तर अशी कोण व्यक्ती आहे जी तुम्हाला इजा करण्याचा प्रयत्न करील? पण,

¹³and who [is] he who will be doing you evil, if of Him who is good ye may become imitators?

¹⁴जे योग्य ते करुनसुद्धा जर तुम्हांला दु:ख सहन करावे लागते, तर तुम्ही धन्य आहात. म्हणून “त्या लोकांची भीति बाळगू नका किंवा गर्भगळित होऊ नका”

¹⁴but if ye also should suffer because of righteousness, happy [are ye]! and of their fear be not afraid, nor be troubled,

¹⁵पण आपल्या अंत:करणात ख्रिस्त हा प्रभु आहे असा आदर बाळगा तुमच्यामध्ये जी आशा आहे, तिच्याविषयी तुम्हांला कोणी विचारले तर त्याचे समर्थन करण्यास सदैव तयार राहा.

¹⁵and the Lord God sanctify in your hearts. And [be] ready always for defence to every one who is asking of you an account concerning the hope that [is] in you, with meekness and fear;

¹⁶पण हे सौम्यतेने व आदराने करा. ख्रिस्तामध्ये जगत असताना तुमच्या चांगल्या वागणुकीवर जे आरोप करतात त्यांना लाज वाटेल, अशा रीतीने तुम्ही आपली विवेकबुद्धी शुद्ध राखा.

¹⁶having a good conscience, that in that in which they speak against you as evil-doers, they may be ashamed who are traducing your good behaviour in Christ;

¹⁷कारण चांगले काम करुनदेखील आपण दु:ख सोसावे अशी जर देवाची इच्छा असेल तर वाईट करुन दु:ख भोगण्यापेक्षा ते अधिक चांगले.

¹⁷for [it is] better doing good, if the will of God will it, to suffer, than doing evil;

¹⁸ख्रिस्तदेखील आपल्या पापांसाठी एकदाच मरण पावला. एक नीतिमान दुसऱ्या अनीतिमानांसाठी मरण पावला. यासाठी की, तुम्हाला देवाकडे जाता यावे. त्याच्या आत्म्यासंबंधी म्हटले तर त्याला पुन्हा जीवन दिले गेले.

¹⁸because also Christ once for sin did suffer — righteous for unrighteous — that he might lead us to God, having been put to death indeed, in the flesh, and having been made alive in the spirit,

¹⁹आत्मिक रुपाने देखील ख्रिस्त बंदिवासात असलेल्या आत्म्यांकडे गेला व सुवार्ता सांगितली.

¹⁹in which also to the spirits in prison having gone he did preach,

²⁰फार पूर्वी नोहाच्या काळात जेव्हा जहाज बांधले जात होते आणि देव धीराने वाट पाहत होता, त्यावेळी ज्यांनी देवाची आज्ञा पाळली नाही, तेच हे आत्मे होत. फक्त थोडकेच म्हणजे आठ लोकच जहाजात गेले व त्यांचा पाण्यापासून बचाव झाला.

²⁰who sometime disbelieved, when once the long-suffering of God did wait, in days of Noah — an ark being preparing — in which few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water;

²¹ते पाणी आत्मा चिन्हात्मकरीत्या बाप्तिस्म्याचे ज्यामुळे आता तुमचे तारण होते त्याचे प्रतीक आहे. बाप्तिस्मा म्हणजे शरीरावरील धूळ काढणे नव्हे, तर तो देवाकडे शुद्ध विवेक मिळावा म्हणून केलेला करार आहे. हे सर्व येशू ख्रिस्ताच्या मरणातून पुन्हा उठण्यामुळे घडू शकले.

²¹also to which an antitype doth now save us — baptism, (not a putting away of the filth of flesh, but the question of a good conscience in regard to God,) through the rising again of Jesus Christ,

²²तो स्वर्गात गेलेला आहे आणि देवाच्या उजव्या हाताशी बसला आहे. देवदूत, अधिकार आणि सामर्थ्य हे सर्व त्याच्या अधीन आहेत.

²²who is at the right hand of God, having gone on to heaven — messengers, and authorities, and powers, having been subjected to him.
