¹प्रमुख याजक स्तेफनाला म्हणाला, “हे सर्व खरे आहे काय?”

¹And the chief priest said, `Are then these things so?`

²स्तेफनाने उत्तर दिले, “माझ्या यहूदी वडीलजनांनो आणि बंधूंनो, माझे ऐका. आपला पिता (पूर्वज) अब्राहाम मेसोपोटेमिया येथे असताना आपल्या गौरवी देवाने त्याला दर्शन दिले. हे तो हारान येथे राहण्यापूर्वी घडले होते.

²and he said, `Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: The God of the glory did appear to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,

³देव अब्राहामाला म्हणाला, ‘तुझा देश व तुझे नातेवाईक सोड. आणि मी दाखवीन त्या देशात जा!’

³and He said to him, Go forth out of thy land, and out of thy kindred, and come to a land that I shall shew thee.

⁴म्हणून अब्राहामाने आपले वतन खास्द्यांचा देश सोडला आणि तो हारान येथे राहू लागला. अब्राहामाच्या वडिलांच्या मृत्यूनंतर देवाने त्याला या ठिकाणी पाठविले, जेथे आता तुम्ही राहत आहात.

⁴`Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from thence, after the death of his father, He did remove him to this land wherein ye now dwell,

⁵परंतु देवाने अब्राहामाला या जमिनीतील काही दिले नाही. देवाने यातील एक पाऊल ठेवण्या इतकी सुध्दा जमीन त्याला दिली नाही. परंतु देवाने त्याला अभिवचन दिले की भविष्यात तो त्याला ही जमीन देईल. व त्याच्या मुलांनाही देईल. अब्राहामाला संतान होण्यापूर्वी हे घडले.

⁵and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and did promise to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him — he having no child.

⁶देव त्याला म्हणाला, ‘तुझी संतती उपरी होईल. ते दुसऱ्या देशात राहतील. तेथील लोक तुइयावंशजांना गुलाम बनवितील आणि त्यांना चारशे वर्षे वाईट रीतीने वागवतील.

⁶`And God spake thus, That his seed shall be sojourning in a strange land, and they shall cause it to serve, and shall do it evil four hundred years,

⁷परंतु जो देश त्यांना गुलाम बनवील त्यांना मी शिक्षा देईन.’ देव असे सुद्धा म्हणाला, ‘त्या गोष्टी घडल्यानंतर, तुझे लोक त्या देशातून बाहेर येतील. मग तुझे लोक या ठिकाणी माझी उपासना करतील.’

⁷and the nation whom they shall serve I will judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and shall do Me service in this place.

⁸देवाने अब्राहामाशी करार केला, या कराराचे चिन्ह होते सुंता. आणि म्हणून जेव्हा अब्राहामाला मुलगा झाला, तेव्हा अब्राहामाने आपल्या मुलाची, तो आठ दिवसांचा असताना, सुंता केली. त्याच्या मुलाचे नाव इसहाक होते. इसहाकानेसुद्धा आपला मुलगा याकोब याची सुंता केली. व याकोबाने आपल्या मुलांची सुंता केली, हे पुत्र नंतर बारा (पूर्वज) वडील झाले.

⁸`And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac [begat] Jacob, and Jacob — the twelve patriarchs;

⁹“या वडिलांना (पूर्वजांना) योसेफाचा मत्सर वाटला. त्यांनी योसेफाला इजिप्तमध्ये एक गुलाम म्हणून विकले, परंतु योसेफाबरोबर देव होता.

⁹and the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,

¹⁰योसेफावर तेथे खूप संकटे आली पण देवाने त्याला सर्व संकटांतून सोडविले, देवाने योसेफाला ज्ञान व शहाणपण दिले. त्यामुळे इजिप्तचा राजा, फारो, याची मर्जी योसेफाला संपादन करता आली. फारोने योसेफाला इजिप्त देशावर व त्याच्या घरावर अधिपती म्हणून नेमले.

¹⁰and did deliver him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he did set him — governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹¹मग सर्व इजिप्त व कनान देशावर दुष्काळ पडला. आणि लोकांच्या दु:खाला अंत राहिला नाही. आमच्या पूर्वजांना अन्नधान्य मिळेनासे झाले.

¹¹`And there came a dearth upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,

¹²जेव्हा याकोबाने ऐकले की, इजिप्त देशामध्ये धान्य आहे, त्याने आपल्या पूर्वजांना तिथे पाठविले, ही पहिली वेळ होती.

¹²and Jacob having heard that there was corn in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;

¹³ते दुसऱ्या वेळी आले तेव्हा योसेफाने आपली ओळख त्यांना करुन दिली. आणि फारो राजाला योसेफाच्या कुटुंबाची माहिती झाली.

¹³and at the second time was Joseph made known to his brethren, and Joseph`s kindred became manifest to Pharaoh,

¹⁴मग योसेफाने काही लोकांना आपल्या वडिलांना, आणि त्याच्या कुटुंबातील पंच्याहतर लोकांना इजिप्त येथे. बोलावण्यासाठी पाठविले.

¹⁴and Joseph having sent, did call for his father Jacob, and all his kindred — with seventy and five souls —

¹⁵मग याकोब इजिप्त देशात गेला आणि तो व आपले पूर्वज तेथेच मरण पावले.

¹⁵and Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,

¹⁶नंतर त्यांचे मृतदेह शेखेमला नेण्यात आले व तेथेच त्यांना पुरण्यात आले. अब्राहामाने शेखेम येथे हामोराच्या पुत्रांना पुरेपूर मोबदला देऊन विकत घेतलेल्या कबरीत त्यांना पुरण्यात आले.

¹⁶and they were carried over into Sychem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Sychem.

¹⁷देवाने अब्राहामाला दिलेले वचन पुरे होण्याची वेळ जसजशी जवळ येऊ लागली, तसतशी इजिप्त देशातील आपल्या लोकांची संख्या वाढू लागली.

¹⁷`And according as the time of the promise was drawing nigh, which God did swear to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁸शेवटी, ज्या राजाला योसेफाची माहिती नव्हती, असा राजा इजिप्तवर राज्य करु लागला.

¹⁸till another king rose, who had not known Joseph;

¹⁹त्या (नवीन) राजाने फार हुशारीने आपल्या लोकांचा फायदा घेतला. तो आपल्या लोकांशी फार निर्दयतेने वागू लागला, तो त्यांच्या बालकांना घराबाहेर टाकून देण्यास भाग पाडू लागला. ती बालके जिवंत राहू नयेत हा त्याचा हेतु होता.

¹⁹this one, having dealt subtilely with our kindred, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babes, that they might not live;

²⁰त्या काळात मोशेचा जन्म झाला. आणि तो (देवाच्या नजरेत) फार सुंदर बालक होता. तीन महिन्यांपर्यंत त्याच्या वडिलांच्या घरात वाढला.

²⁰in which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up three months in the house of his father;

²¹आणि जेव्हा त्याला घराबाहेर ठेवण्यात आले तेव्हा फारोच्या कन्येने त्याला घेतले. तिने त्याला आपल्या मुलासारख वाढवल.

²¹and he having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and did rear him to herself for a son;

²²इजिप्तच्या लोकांनी त्याला सर्व प्रकारच्या ज्ञानात सुशिक्षित केले. तसेच तो बोलण्यात व कृतीत भारदस्त झाला.

²²and Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.

²³“जेव्हा तो चाळीस वर्षांचा झाला, त्याने विचार केला की, आपले बांधव, जे यहूदी लोक त्यांना जाऊन भेटावे,

²³`And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came upon his heart to look after his brethren, the sons of Israel;

²⁴आणि जेव्हा त्याने आपल्या इस्राएली बांधवांपैकी एकाला वाईट वागविले जाताना पाहिले, तेव्हा त्याने त्या इजिप्तच्या रहिवाश्याला मारले, व आपल्या बांधवाची सुटका केली; छळ केला जाणाऱ्या यहूदी मनुष्याच्या वतीने त्याने बदला घेतला.

²⁴and having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he did defend, and did justice to the oppressed, having smitten the Egyptian;

²⁵देव त्याच्या हातून यहूदी लोकांची सुटका करीत आहे, हे यहूदी लोकांना कळेल असे मोशेला वाटले, परंतु त्यांना ते कळले नाही.

²⁵and he was supposing his brethren to understand that God through his hand doth give salvation; and they did not understand.

²⁶दुसऱ्या दिवशी दोन यहूदी माणसे भांडण करताना मोशेने पाहिली, ते पाहून मोशे त्यांच्यात मध्यस्थी करु लागला. तो त्यांना म्हणाला, ‘पुरुषांनो, तुम्ही एकमेकांचे भाऊ आहात, तुम्ही एकमेकांशी का भांडत आहात?’

²⁶`On the succeeding day, also, he shewed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, brethren are ye, wherefore do ye injustice to one another?

²⁷परंतु जो मनुष्य आपल्या शेजाऱ्याशी वाईट रीतीने वागत होता, त्याने मोशेला एका बाजूला सारुन म्हटले, ‘आमच्यावर अधिकार गाजवायला आणि आमचा न्यायनिवाडा करायला तुला कोणी नेमिले?

²⁷and he who is doing injustice to the neighbour, did thrust him away, saying, Who set thee a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁸काल तू त्या इजिप्तच्या माणसाला ठार मारलेस; तसाच माझाही जीव घेण्याचे तुइया मनात आहे का?’

²⁸to kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?

²⁹‘जेव्हा मोशेने त्याला हे बोलताना ऐकले, तेव्हा तो इजिप्त सोडून पळून गेला. आणि मिद्यान्यांच्या देशात उपरी म्हणून राहू लागला आणि तेथेच त्याला दोन मुलगे झाले,

²⁹`And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,

³⁰चाळीस वर्षांनंतर मोशे सीनाय पर्वताजवळच्या वाळवंटात होता. एका जळणाऱ्या झुडपांत मोशेला देवदूताचे दर्शन झाले.

³⁰and forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai a messenger of the Lord, in a flame of fire of a bush,

³¹जेव्हा मोशेने हे पाहिले तेव्हा तो आश्चर्यचकित झाला. नीट पाहता यावे म्हणून तो त्या जळत्या झुडपाजवळ गेला. मोशेने एक वाणी ऐकली, तो आवाज प्रभूचा होता.

³¹and Moses having seen did wonder at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord unto him,

³²प्रभु म्हणाला, ‘मी तुझ्या वाडवडिलांचा देव आहे - अब्राहाम, इसहाक, याकोब यांचा देव आहे.’ मोशे भीतीने थरथर कापू लागला. डोळे वर करुन पाहण्याचे धाडस त्याला होईना.

³²I [am] the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And Moses having become terrified, durst not behold,

³³देव त्याला म्हणाला, ‘तुझ्या पायातील वहाणा काढ! कारण ज्या जागेवर तू उभा आहेस ती जागा पवित्र आहे.

³³and the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place in which thou hast stood is holy ground;

³⁴माझ्या लोकांचा इजिप्त देशात होणारा छळ मी पाहिला आहे. आणि त्यांचे विव्हळ्णे माझ्या कानी आले आहे. म्हणून त्यांची सुटका करण्यास मी खाली आलो आहे. आता ये, मी तुला परत इजिप्त देशाला पाठवीत आहे.’

³⁴seeing I have seen the affliction of My people that [is] in Egypt, and their groaning I did hear, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee to Egypt.

³⁵“मोशे हाच तो मनुष्य होता, ज्याला यहूदी लोकांनी नाकारले. ‘तुला कोणी आमच्यावर अधिकार गाजवायला आणि न्याय करायला निवडले आहे काय?’ असे ते त्याला म्हणाले. मोशे हाच मनुष्य आहे की ज्याला देवाने शासनकर्ता व तारणारा म्हणून पाठविले. देवाने मोशेला देवदूताच्या मदतीने पाठविले. याच देवदूताला मोशेने जळत्या झुडपात पाहिले होते.

³⁵`This Moses, whom they did refuse, saying, Who did set thee a ruler and a judge? this one God a ruler and a redeemer did send, in the hand of a messenger who appeared to him in the bush;

³⁶म्हणून मोशेने लोकांना बाहेर काढले. त्याने सामर्थ्यशाली कृत्ये व चमत्कार केले. मोशेने ह्या गोष्टी इजिप्तमध्ये, तांबड्या समुद्राजवळ, आणि वाळवंटात चाळीस वर्षे केल्या.

³⁶this one did bring them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;

³⁷हा तोच मोशे आहे, ज्याने यहूदी लोकांना असे म्हटले: ‘देव तुम्हाला एक भविष्यवादी देईल. तो भविष्यवादी तुमच्याच लोकांमधून येईल. तो माइयासारखाच भविष्यवादी असेल’

³⁷this is the Moses who did say to the sons of Israel: A prophet to you shall the Lord your God raise up out of your brethren, like to me, him shall ye hear.

³⁸जो अरण्यात यहूद्दांबरोबर होता, सीनाय पर्वतावर आपणाबरोबर बोलणाऱ्या देवदूताबरोबर व आपल्या वाडवडीलांबरोबर होता ज्याला आम्हास देण्यासठी जीवनदायी वचने मिळाली होती, तोच हा मोशे होय,

³⁸`This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the messenger who is speaking to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers who did receive the living oracles to give to us;

³⁹“परंतु आपले वाडवडील त्याचे ऐकायला तयार नव्हते. त्यांनी त्याचे ऐकले नाही. आणि त्यांनी त्याला नाकारले. त्यांची मने इजिप्त देशाकडे परत ओढ घेऊ लागली.

³⁹to whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but did thrust away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

⁴⁰आपले वाडवडील अहरोनाला म्हणाले, ‘आमच्यापुढे चालतील असे देव आमच्यासाठी तयार कर. कारण इजिप्त देशातून काढून आम्हांला बाहेर घेऊन येणारा हा मोशे, त्याचे काय झाले हे आम्हांला माहीत नाही’.

⁴⁰saying to Aaron, Make to us gods who shall go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what hath happened to him.

⁴¹त्यांनी याच काळात वासरासारखी दिसणारी एक मूर्ती तयार केली आणि त्या मूर्तीला अर्पणे सादर केली. आपल्या हातांनी घडविलेल्या या मूर्तीपुढे त्यांनी आनंदोत्सव साजरा केला!

⁴¹`And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,

⁴²पण देवाने त्या लोकांकडे पाठ फिरविली आणि आकाशातील समूहांची (तारे, नक्षत्र, अशा खोट्या देवांची) भक्ति करीत राहण्यासाठी मोकळे सोडले. कारण भविष्याद्यांच्या पुस्तकात असे लिहिले आहे:देव म्हणतो, ‘अहो यहूदी लोकांनो, तुम्ही वधलेल्या पशूंची अर्पणे मला आणली नाहीत, रानातील चाळीस वर्षांत.

⁴²and God did turn, and did give them up to do service to the host of the heaven, according as it hath been written in the scroll of the prophets: Slain beasts and sacrifices did ye offer to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

⁴³तुम्ही तुमच्याबरोबर मोलेखासाठी तंबू (उपासनेचे स्थळ) आणि तुमचा देव रेफान यासाठी तान्यांच्या मूर्ती नेल्यात या मूर्ती तुम्ही केल्या यासाठी की तुम्हांला उपासना करता यावी म्हणून मी तुम्हांला दूर बाबेलोनपलीकडे पाठवीन’ आमोस 5:24-27

⁴³and ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan — the figures that ye made to bow before them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.

⁴⁴“अरण्यात आपल्या वाडवडिलांच्या बरोबर साक्षीदाखल देवाचा तंबू होता. देवाने तो जसा बनविण्यास सांगितले त्याप्रमाणे व देवाने दाखविलेल्या नमुन्याप्रमाणे मोशेने तो बनविला.

⁴⁴`The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He did direct, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;

⁴⁵नंतर यहोशवाने आपल्या वाडवडिलांचे नेतृत्व करुन इतर देशांच्या जमिनी काबिज केल्या. ती राष्टे परमेश्वरानेे आमच्या पुढून घालविली. जेव्हा आपले लोक या नवीन प्रदेशात गेले तेव्हा हाच तंबू त्यांनी सोबत नेला. आमच्या लोकांना हा तंबू त्यांच्या वाडवडिलांकडून मिळाला व आपल्या पूर्वजांनी दावीदाच्या काळापर्यंत तो ठेवला.

⁴⁵which also our fathers having in succession received, did bring in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God did drive out from the presence of our fathers, till the days of David,

⁴⁶दावीद देवाच्या मर्जीचा असल्याने, याकोबाच्या देवासाठी मंदीर बांधण्याची इच्छा त्याने दर्शविली.

⁴⁶who found favour before God, and requested to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;

⁴⁷परंतु देवाचे मंदिर शलमोनाने बांधले.

⁴⁷and Solomon built Him an house.

⁴⁸“कारण सर्वेच्च देव मनुष्यांनी त्यांच्या हातांनी बांधलेल्या घरात राहत नाही. भविष्यवादी असे लिहितात:

⁴⁸`But the Most High in sanctuaries made with hands doth not dwell, according as the prophet saith:

⁴⁹‘प्रभु म्हणतो, स्वर्ग माझे सिंहासन आहे. पृथ्वी ही माझे पाय ठेवण्याचे आसन आहे. तुम्ही माइयासाठी कसले घर बांधू शकता? मला विश्रांती घेण्यासाठी दुसऱ्या ठिकाणाची गरज नाही.

⁴⁹The heaven [is] My throne, and the earth My footstool; what house will ye build to Me? saith the Lord, or what [is] the place of My rest?

⁵⁰माझ्या हातांनी या सर्व गोष्टी केल्या नाहीत काय?’ यशया 66:1-2

⁵⁰hath not My hand made all these things?

⁵¹“तुम्ही जे ताठ मानेचे लोक आहात त्या तुमची मने व कान विदेशी लोकांसारखी असून तुम्ही नेहमीच पवित्र आत्म्याला आपल्या पूर्वजांप्रमाणेच नाकारीत आला आहात.

⁵¹`Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! ye do always the Holy Spirit resist; as your fathers — also ye;

⁵²तुमच्या वाडवडिलांनी छळ केला नाही, असा कोणी एखादा भविष्यवादी होऊन गेला काय? एक धार्मिक (रिव्रस्त) येणार अशी घोषणा करणाऱ्यांचा त्यांनी वध केला. आणि आता तर तुम्ही त्याचा ही (रिव्रस्ताचा) विश्वासघात व खून केलात.

⁵²which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom now ye betrayers and murderers have become,

⁵³तुम्हीच लोक आहात, ज्यांना नियमशास्त्र मिळाले. देवाने हे नियमशास्त्र देवदूतांकरवी दिले. परंतु तुम्ही ते पाळीत नाही!”

⁵³who received the law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep [it].`

⁵⁴यहूदी लोकांनी स्तेफनाला हे बोलताला ऐकले व त्यांना फार राग आला, ते त्याच्याविरुद्ध दातओठ खाऊ लागले.

⁵⁴And hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and did gnash the teeth at him;

⁵⁵परंतु स्तेफन पवित्र आत्म्याने भरलेला होता. त्याने आपली नजर वर स्वर्गाकडे लावली. देवाचा गौरव त्याने पाहिला. त्याने येशूला देवाच्या उजवीकडे उभे असलेले पाहिले.

⁵⁵and being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked stedfastly to the heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁶तो म्हणाला, “पहा! स्वर्ग उघडलेला मला दिसत आहे. व मी मनुष्याच्या पुत्राला देवाच्या उजवीकडे उभा असलेला पाहत आह!”

⁵⁶and he said, `Lo, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.`

⁵⁷स्तेफनाचे हे शब्द ऐकून यहूदी मोठ्याने ओरडले. त्यांनी आपले कान स्वत;च्या हातांनी झाकून घेतले. नंतर ते सर्व मिळून स्तेफनावर धावून गेले.

⁵⁷And they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and did rush with one accord upon him,

⁵⁸त्यानी स्तेफनाला धरुन ओढीत शहराच्या बाहेर नेले व त्याला दगडमार करु लागले. जे साक्षी होते, त्यांनी आपले कपडे शौल नावाच्या एका तरुण मनुष्यापाशी ठेवले होते.

⁵⁸and having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning [him] — and the witnesses did put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul —

⁵⁹ते स्तेफनावर दगडमार करीत असताना तो मोठ्याने प्रार्थना करीत म्हणाला, “हे प्रभु येशू, माइया आत्म्याचा स्वीकार कर!”

⁵⁹and they were stoning Stephen, calling and saying, `Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;`

⁶⁰नंतर स्तेफनाने आपले गुडघे टेकले व मोठ्याने ओरडून म्हणाला, “प्रभु, यांचे हे करणे त्यांच्या माथी पाप असे मानू नको!” असे बोलून त्याने प्राण सोडला.

⁶⁰and having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, `Lord, mayest thou not lay to them this sin;` and this having said, he fell asleep.
