¹योडचा मेलेल्या माशा सगव्व्यांत चांगल्या अत्तरालासुध्दा वाईट वास आणतात. त्याचप्रमाणे थोडासा मूर्खपणा खूपशा शहाणपणाचा आणि सन्मानाचा नाश करू शकतो.

¹Dead flies cause a perfumer`s perfume To send forth a stink; The precious by reason of wisdom — By reason of honour — a little folly!

²विद्धान माणसाचे विचार त्याला योग्य दिशेने नेतात. पण मूर्खाचे विचार त्याला अयोग्य दिशेकडे नेतात.

²The heart of the wise [is] at his right hand, And the heart of a fool at his left.

³मूर्ख त्याचा मूर्खपणा रस्त्यावरून जात असतानासुध्दा दाखवतो. तेव्हा तो मूर्ख आहे हे सर्वांना दिसते.

³And also, when he that is a fool Is walking in the way, his heart is lacking, And he hath said to every one, `He [is] a fool.`

⁴तुमचे वरिष्ठ तुमच्यावर रागावले आहेत म्हणून तुम्ही तुमची नोकरी सोडू नका. जर तुम्ही शांत राहिलात आणि मदत केलीत तर तुम्ही तुमच्या घोडचुकाही दुरुस्त करू शकाल.

⁴If the spirit of the ruler go up against thee, Thy place leave not, For yielding quieteth great sinners.

⁵मी आयुष्यात जे काही पाहिले त्यात ही एक गोष्ट आहे आणि ती योग्य नाही. राजे लोक करतात तशी ती एक चूक आहे.

⁵There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error that goeth out from the ruler,

⁶मूर्खांना महत्वाची जागा दिली जाते आणि श्रीमंतांना बिनमहत्वाच्या जागा दिल्या जातात.

⁶He hath set the fool in many high places, And the rich in a low place do sit.

⁷जे लोक नोकर व्हायच्या लायकीचे असतात त्यांना घोडचावरून जाताना मी पाहिले आणि जे लोक राजे व्हायच्या योग्यतेचे होते त्यांना मूर्खाबरोबर गुलामासारखे जाताना मी पाहिले.

⁷I have seen servants on horses, And princes walking as servants on the earth.

⁸जो माणूस खड्डा खणतो, तो त्याच खड्ड्यात पडू शकतो. जो माणूस भिंत पाडून टाकतो त्याला साप चावण्याची शक्यता असते.

⁸Whoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And whoso is breaking a hedge, a serpent biteth him.

⁹जो माणूस मोठ मोठे दगड हलवतो त्याला त्यामुळेच इजा होऊ शकते. आणि जो माणूस झाडे तोडतो तो संकटात असतो. ती झाडे त्याच्याच अंगावर पडण्याची शक्यता असते.

⁹Whoso is removing stones is grieved by them, Whoso is cleaving trees endangered by them.

¹⁰पण शहाणपण कुठलेही काम सोपे करते. धार नसलेल्या सुरीने कापणे कठीण असते. पण एखाद्याने जर सुरीला धार लावली तर कापणे सोपे जाते. शहाणपण तसेच आहे.

¹⁰If the iron hath been blunt, And he the face hath not sharpened, Then doth he increase strength, And wisdom [is] advantageous to make right.

¹¹एखाद्याला सापावर ताबा कसा मिळवायचा ते माहीत असते. पण तो माणूस जवळपास नसताना कोणाला साप चावला तर त्या कौशल्याचा उपयोग नसतो. ते कौशल्य निरुपयोगी ठरते. शहाणपणही तसेच आहे.

¹¹If the serpent biteth without enchantment, Then there is no advantage to a master of the tongue.

¹²विद्धाव माणसाचे शब्द स्तुतीला पात्र ठरतात. पण मूर्खाचे शब्द त्याचा नाश ओढवतात.

¹²Words of the mouth of the wise [are] gracious, And the lips of a fool swallow him up.

¹³मूर्ख माणूस मूर्ख गोष्टींनी सुरुवात करतो. शेवटी तर तो वेडचासारख्या गोष्टी सांगायला लागतो.

¹³The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] folly, And the latter end of his mouth [Is] mischievous madness.

¹⁴मूर्ख माणूस नेहमी तो काय करणार आहे याबद्दल बोलत असतो. पण भविष्यात काय घडणार आहे ते कोणालाच माहीत नसते. नंतर काय घडेल ते कोणीच सांगू शकत नाही.

¹⁴And the fool multiplieth words: `Man knoweth not that which is, And that which is after him, who doth declare to him?`

¹⁵मूर्ख माणूस घरी जाण्याचा रस्ता शोधून काढण्याइतका हुशार नसतो म्हणून त्याला आयुष्यभर कष्ट उपसावे लागतात.

¹⁵The labour of the foolish wearieth him, In that he hath not known to go unto the city.

¹⁶राजा जर लहान मुलासारखा असला तर ते देशाच्या दृष्टीने फार वाईट असते. आणि जर राजे लोक आपला सर्व वेळ खाण्यात घालवत असतील तर तेही देशाच्या दृष्टीने वाईट असते.

¹⁶Wo to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a youth, And thy princes do eat in the morning.

¹⁷पण राजा जर चांगल्या घराण्यातून आलेला असेल तर ते देशाच्या दृष्टीने चांगले असते. आणि जर राजांनी आपल्या खाण्यापिण्यावर ताबा मिळवला तर तेही देशासाठी चांगले असते. ते राजे सशक्त होण्यासाठी खातात-पितात, नशा चढण्यासाठी नाही.

¹⁷Happy art thou, O land, When thy king [is] a son of freemen, And thy princes do eat in due season, For might, and not for drunkenness.

¹⁸जर एखादा माणूस कामाच्या बाबतीत खूप आळशी असेल तर त्याचे घर गळायला लागेल आणि त्याचे छत कोसळून पडेल.

¹⁸By slothfulness is the wall brought low, And by idleness of the hands doth the house drop.

¹⁹लोकांना खायला आवडते, आणि द्राक्षारस (मद्य) आयुष्य आनंदी करतो. पण पैसा अनेक समस्यांची उकल करतो.

¹⁹For mirth they are making a feast, And wine maketh life joyful, And the silver answereth with all.

²⁰राजाबद्दल वाईट बोलू नका. त्याच्याबद्दल वाईट विचारसुध्दा करू नका. श्रीमंत लोकांबद्दलसुध्दा वाईट बोलू नका. तुम्ही तुमच्या घरात एकटेच असलांत तरी सुध्दा. का? कारण एक छोटासा पक्षी उडून जाईल व त्यांना तुम्ही काय काय बोलला ते सांगेल.

²⁰Even in thy mind a king revile not, And in the inner parts of thy bed-chamber Revile not the rich: For a fowl of the heavens causeth the voice to go, And a possessor of wings declareth the word.
