¹अवर्षणाबद्दल यिर्मयाला परमेश्वराने पुढील संदेश दिला.

¹That which hath been the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah concerning the matters of the dearths:

²“यहूदा हे राष्ट्र, मेलेल्या लोकांकरिता आक्रंदत आहे. यहूदाच्या शहरामधील लोक अधिकाधिक क्षीण होत चालले आहेत ते जमिनीवर पडून आहेत. यरुशलेमधील लोक देवाकडे मदतीसाठी टाहो फोडत आहेत.

²Mourned hath Judah, and her gates have languished, They have mourned to the earth, And the cry of Jerusalem hath gone up.

³नेते मंडळी आपल्या नोकरांना पाणी आणण्यासाठी पाठवितात. नोकर पाण्याच्या टाक्यांकडे जातात, पण त्यांना थोडेसुद्धा पाणी मिळत नाही. त्यामुळे त्यांना रिकामी भांडी घेऊन परत यावे लागते. म्हणून ते लज्जित व खजील होऊन आपले चेहरे झाकून घेतात.

³And their honourable ones have sent their little ones to the water, They have come unto ditches, They have not found water, They have turned back — their vessels empty! They have been ashamed, And have blushed and covered their head.

⁴कोठेही पाऊस न पडल्यामुळे कोणीही पिकांसाठी जमिनीची मशागत करीत नाही. शेतकरी हवालदिल झाले आहेत त्यामुळे त्यांनी आपले चेहरे झाकून घेतले आहेत.

⁴Because the ground hath been broken, For there hath been no rain in the land, Ashamed have been husbandmen, They have covered their head.

⁵कोठेही गवत नसल्यामुळे हरीणी आपल्या नवजात पाडसाला एकटेच सोडून देते.

⁵For even the hind in the field hath brought forth — to forsake [it!] For there hath been no grass.

⁶उघड्या डोंगरावर उभी राहून, जंगली गाढवे कोल्ह्यांप्रमाणे हवा हुंगतात. पण त्यांना कोठेही काहीही खाण्यालायक दिसत नाही. कारण खाण्यालायक एकही झुडूप शिल्लक नाही.”

⁶And wild asses have stood on high places, They have swallowed up wind like dragons, Consumed have been their eyes, for there is no herb.

⁷या गोष्टींना आम्हीच जबाबदार आहोत, हे आम्हाला माहीत आहे. आम्ही आमच्याच पापाचे भोग भोगत आहोत. परमेश्वरा, तुझे नाव राखण्यासाठी आम्हाला मदत कर. कारण आम्ही तुझ्याशी खूप वेळा प्रतारणा केली, हे आम्हाला कबूल आहे. आम्ही तुझ्याशी पापाचरण केले,

⁷Surely our iniquities have testified against us, O Jehovah, work for Thy name`s sake, For many have been our backslidings, Against Thee we have sinned.

⁸देवा, तू इस्राएलचे आशास्थान आहेस. संकटकाळी तू इस्राएलला वाचवितोस. पण, आता, तू, फक्त रात्री मुक्काम करुन पुढे जाणाऱ्या प्रवाशासारखा वाटतोस.

⁸O Hope of Israel — its saviour in time of trouble, Why art Thou as a sojourner in the land? And as a traveller turned aside to lodge?

⁹अचानकपणे हल्ला झाल्यावर चकित झालेल्या माणसाप्रमाणे तू वाटतोस. कोणालाही वाचविण्यास असमर्थ असलेल्या हतबल सैनिकासारखा तू दिसतोस. पण परमेश्वरा, तू आमच्याबरोबर आहेस. आम्ही तुझ्या नावाने ओळखले जातो तेव्हा आम्हाला मदत न करता जाऊ नकोस.”

⁹Why art Thou as one dumb? As a mighty one not able to save? And Thou [art] in our midst, O Jehovah, And Thy name over us is called, leave us not.

¹⁰यहूदाच्या लोकांबद्दल देवाचे म्हणणे असे आहे: “यहूदाच्या लोकांना माझा त्याग करणे आवडते. माझा त्याग करण्यास ते मागेपुढे पाहत नाहीत. तेव्हा आता परमेश्वर त्यांचा स्वीकार करणार नाही. तो त्यांची दुष्कृत्ये लक्षात ठेवून त्यांच्या पापांबद्दल त्यांना शिक्षा करील.”

¹⁰Thus said Jehovah concerning this people: Well they have loved to wander, Their feet they have not restrained, And Jehovah hath not accepted them, Now doth He remember their iniquity, And inspect their sin.

¹¹नंतर परमेश्वर मला म्हणाला, “यिर्मया, यहूदाच्या लोकांच्या भल्यासाठी तू विनवणी करु नकोस.

¹¹And Jehovah saith unto me: Thou dost not pray for this people for good,

¹²यहूदाचे लोक कदाचित् उपवास करुन माझी प्रार्थना करतील. पण ती त्यांची प्रार्थना ऐकणार नाही. जरी त्यांनी मला होमार्पण व धान्यार्पणचा नैवेद्य दाखविला, तरी मी त्या लोकांचा स्वीकार करणार नाही. मी युद्धात यहूदाच्या लोकांचा नाश करीन. अन्न तोडून मी त्यांची उपासमार करीन. भयंकर रोगराई पसरवून मी त्यांना नष्ट करीन.”

¹²When they fast, I hearken not unto their cry, And when they cause to ascend burnt-offering and present, I accept them not, For by sword, and by famine, And by pestilence, I am consuming them.

¹³पण मी परमेश्वराला म्हणालो, “परमेश्वरा, माझ्या प्रभू, संदेष्टे तर लोकांना काही वेगळेच सांगत होते. ते लोकांना सांगत होते, ‘शत्रू कधीच तुमच्यावर हल्ला करणार नाही. तुमची कधीही उपासमार होणार नाही. परमेश्वर तुमच्या देशात शांती राखेल.”

¹³And I say, `Ah, Lord Jehovah, Lo, the prophets are saying to them: Ye do not see a sword, yea, famine is not to you, For true peace I give to you in this place.`

¹⁴मग परमेश्वर मला म्हणाला, “यिर्मया, माझ्या नावावर हे संदेष्टे असत्य कथन करतात. मी त्यांना पाठविलेले नाही. मी त्यांना आज्ञा केली नाही वा त्यांच्याशी बोललोही नाही. ते लोकांपुढे खोटे दृष्टान्त सांगतात, त्यांना मोहजालात फसवितात व स्वत:चे स्वप्नरंजन करतात.

¹⁴And Jehovah saith unto me: Falsehood the prophets are prophesying in My name, I did not send them, nor command them, Nor have I spoken unto them: A false vision, and divination, and vanity, And the deceit of their own heart, they are prophesying to you.

¹⁵माझ्या नावावर प्रवचने देणाऱ्या संदेष्ट्यांबद्दल बोलायचे झालेच तर, मी त्यांना पाठविले नाही. ते म्हणतात ‘या देशावर कोणीही हल्ला करणार नाही.’ ह्या देशाची कधीही उपासमार होणार नाही.’ पण ते संदेष्टेच उपासमारीने मरतील. शत्रू त्यांना ठार करील.

¹⁵Therefore, thus said Jehovah concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, and I have not sent them, and they are saying, Sword and famine is not in this land: By sword and by famine are these prophets consumed.

¹⁶आणि ज्या लोकांशी ते संदेष्टे बोलले, ते लोक रस्त्यावर उघडे पडतील. उपासमार व शत्रू यांचे ते बळी ठरतील. त्यांचे वा त्यांच्या बायकामुलांचे दफन करण्यास कोणीही असणार नाही. मी त्यांना शिक्षा करीन.

¹⁶And the people to whom they are prophesying, Are cast into out-places of Jerusalem, Because of the famine, and of the sword, And they have none burying them, Them, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, And I have poured out upon them this evil.

¹⁷“यिर्मया, यहूदाच्या लोकांना माझा संदेश सांग: ‘माझ्या डोळ्यांत अश्रू दाटून आलेत. माझ्या कुमारी मुलीसाठी मी रात्रंदिवस अव्याहतपणे आक्रोश करीन. माझ्या लोकांसाठी मी न थांबता आक्रोश करीन. का? कारण कोणीतरी त्यांच्यावर वार करुन त्यांना चिरडले आहे. ते लोक गंभीररीत्या जखमी झाले आहेत.

¹⁷And thou hast said unto them this word: Tears come down mine eyes night and day, And they do not cease, For, [with] a great breach, Broken hath been the virgin daughter of my people, A very grievous stroke.

¹⁸मी जर त्या देशात गेलो, तर मला तलवारीने मारले गेलेले लोक दिसतील. मी जर शहरात गेलो, तर मला सर्वत्र दौर्बल्य आढळेल. कारण लोकांच्याजवळ अन्न नाही. याजकांना आणि संदेष्ट्यांना परदेशात नेले आहे.”‘

¹⁸If I have gone forth to the field, Then, lo, the pierced of the sword! And if I have entered the city, Then, lo, the diseased of famine! For both prophet and priest have gone up and down Unto a land that they knew not.

¹⁹“परमेश्वरा, तू यहूदाला पूर्णपणे त्याज्य ठरविले आहेस का? सियोनचा तुला तिरस्कार वाटतो का? आमची स्थिती परत न सुधारण्याइतके तू आमचे नुकसान केले आहेस. तू असे का केलेस? आम्हाला शांती पाहिजे होती. पण आमच्या वाट्याला काहीच चांगले आले नाही. जखमा भरुन येण्याची आम्ही आशा केली, पण आमच्या वाट्याला फक्त भीती आली.

¹⁹Hast Thou utterly rejected Judah? Zion hath Thy soul loathed? Wherefore hast Thou smitten us, And there is no healing to us? Looking for peace, and there is no good, And for a time of healing, and lo, terror.

²⁰परमेश्वरा, आम्ही पापी आहोत, ह्याची आम्हाला जाणीव आहे. आमच्या पूर्वजांनी दुष्कृत्ये केली. आम्ही तुझे अपराध केले.

²⁰We have known, O Jehovah, our wickedness, The iniquity of our fathers, For we have sinned against Thee.

²¹परमेश्वरा, तुझ्या नावाचा लौकिक राखण्याकरिता, आम्हाला दूर लोटू नकोस तुझ्या वैभवशाली सिंहासनाचा मान राख. आमच्याशी केलेला करार आठव. त्या कराराचा भंग करु नकोस.

²¹Do not despise, for Thy name`s sake, Dishonour not the throne of Thine honour, Remember, break not Thy covenant with us.

²²परदेशातील मूर्तींत पाऊस पाडण्याचे सामर्थ्य नाही. पावसाच्या सरी पाडण्याची ताकद आकाशात नाही. तूच एक आमचे आशास्थान आहेस. या सर्व गोष्टी करणारा तूच एकमेव आहेस.”

²²Are there among the vanities of the nations any causing rain? And do the heavens give showers? Art not Thou He, O Jehovah our God? And we wait for thee, for Thou — Thou hast done all these!
