1मग परमेश्वर योनाशी पून्हा बोलला. परमेश्वर म्हणाला,
1And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah a second time, saying,
2“त्या मोठ्या नगरीला, निनवेला जा आणि मी सांगतो तो संदेश सांग.”
2`Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim unto it the proclamation that I am speaking unto thee;`
3मग योनाने परमेश्वराची आज्ञा पाळली. तो निनवेला गेला. निनवे फार मोठी नगरी होती. नगरीच्या एका टोकापासून दूसऱ्या टोकापर्यंत जाण्यास तीन दिवस चालावे लागे.
3and Jonah riseth, and he goeth unto Nineveh, according to the word of Jehovah. And Nineveh hath been a great city before God, a journey of three days.
4योना नगरी मध्यभागी जाऊन लोकांना उपदेश करु लागला. योना म्हणाला, “चाळीस दिवसानंतर निनवेचा नाश होईल. “
4And Jonah beginneth to go in to the city a journey of one day, and proclaimeth, and saith, `Yet forty days — and Nineveh is overturned.`
5निनवेच्या लोकांनी परमेवराच्या संदेशावर विश्वास ठेवला. त्यांनी काही काळ उपवास करण्याचे ठरविले आणि आपल्या पापांचा विचार करण्याचा निश्चय केला. त्यांनी खेद प्रदर्शित करणारे खास कपडे घातले. नगरीतल्या सर्व लोकांनी असे केले. मग तो राव असो की रंक.
5And the men of Nineveh believe in God, and proclaim a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even unto their least,
6निनवेच्या राजाच्या कानावर या गोष्टी गेल्या. त्याला त्याने केलेल्या वाईट कृत्यांबद्दल खेद वाटला. त्याने त्याचे सिंहासन सोडले व आपली राजवस्त्रे उतरविली आणि दु:ख प्रकट करण्यासाठी असलेली वस्त्रे घातली. मग तो राखेत बसला.
6seeing the word doth come unto the king of Nineveh, and he riseth from his throne, and removeth his honourable robe from off him, and spreadeth out sackcloth, and sitteth on the ashes,
7त्याने एक विशेष संदेश लिहिला आणि तो सर्व नगरीत घोषित केला. राजा आणि महान राज्यकर्ते यांची आज्ञा: काही काळ कोणत्याही माणसाने व पशूने काहीही खाऊ नये. गुराढोरांनी रानांत चरू नये. निनवेत राहणाऱ्या कोणत्याही सजीवाने खाऊ-पिऊ नये.
7and he crieth and saith in Nineveh by a decree of the king and his great ones, saying, `Man and beast, herd and flock — let them not taste anything, let them not feed, even water let them not drink;
8प्रत्येक माणसाने व प्राण्याने दु:ख प्रकट करणारे वस्त्र पांघरले पाहिजे. माणसांनी परमेश्वरापाशी टाहो फोडला पाहिजे. प्रत्येकाचे जीवन बदलले पाहिजे आणि वाईट कर्मे करावयाचे थांबविले पाहिजे.
8and cover themselves [with] sackcloth let man and beast, and let them call unto God mightily, and let them turn back each from his evil way, and from the violence that [is] in their hands.
9मग कदाचित् देवाचे मन:परिवर्तन होईल आणि योजलेल्या गोष्टी तो करणार नाही. कदाचित् देवाच्या मनात बदल होईल व तो रागावणार नाही, व आपला नाशही होणार नाही.
9Who knoweth? He doth turn back, and God hath repented, and hath turned back from the heat of His anger, and we do not perish.`
10लोकांचे वागणे परमेश्वराने पाहिले. लोकांनी दुष्कृत्ये करावयाचे सोडून दिले हेही परमेश्वराने पाहिले. मग परमेश्वराचे मन बदलले व त्याने ठरविल्याप्रमाणे केले नाही. परमेश्वराने लोकांना शिक्षा केली नाही.
10And God seeth their works, that they have turned back from their evil way, and God repenteth of the evil that He spake of doing to them, and he hath not done [it].
