1द्राक्षारस आणि मद्य यामुळे लोकांचा स्वत:वरचा ताबा जातो. ते खूप जोरात बोलतात आणि फुशारकी मारायला लागतात. ते झिंगलेले असतात आणि मूर्खासारख्या गोष्टी करायला लागतात.
1Wine [is] a scorner — strong drink [is] noisy, And any going astray in it is not wise.
2राजाचा राग सिंहगर्जनेसारखा असतो. तुम्ही जर राजाला राग येऊ दिला तर तुम्ही तुमचे प्राणदेखील गमावू शकता.
2The fear of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, He who is causing him to be wroth is wronging his soul.
3कुठलाही मूर्ख वादविवादाला सुरुवात करु शकतो. म्हणून जो वादविवादाला नकार देतो त्याचा तुम्ही आदर करु शकता.
3An honour to a man is cessation from strife, And every fool intermeddleth.
4आळशी मनुष्य बी पेरायचादेखील आळस करतो. म्हणून हंगामाच्या वेळी तो अन्न शोधतो, पण त्याला काहीही मिळत नाही.
4Because of winter the slothful plougheth not, He asketh in harvest, and there is nothing.
5चांगला उपदेश हा खोल विहिरीतून घेतलेल्या पाण्यासारखा असतो. परंतु शहाणा माणूस दुसऱ्याकडून शिकण्याचा आटोकाट प्रयत्न करतो.
5Counsel in the heart of a man [is] deep water, And a man of understanding draweth it up.
6बरेच लोक आपण प्रामाणिक आणि प्रेमळ आहोत असे सांगतात. पण खरोखरच असा माणूस सापडणे कठीण असते.
6A multitude of men proclaim each his kindness, And a man of stedfastness who doth find?
7चांगला माणूस चांगले आयुष्य जगतो आणि त्याच्या मुलांना आशीर्वाद मिळतात.
7The righteous is walking habitually in his integrity, O the happiness of his sons after him!
8जेव्हा राजा बसून लोकांचा न्यायनिवाडा करतो तेव्हा त्याला स्वत:च्या डोळ्यांनी वाईट गोष्टी बघता येतात.
8A king sitting on a throne of judgment, Is scattering with his eyes all evil,
9कुठलाही माणूस आपण प्रयत्नांची पराकाष्टा केली असे खरोखरच म्हणू शकेल का? मी पाप केले नाही असे कुणी खरोखर सांगू शकेल का? नाही.
9Who saith, `I have purified my heart, I have been cleansed from my sin?`
10जे लोक चुकीची वजने आणि तराजू वापरुन लोकांना फसवतात त्यांचा परमेश्वर तिरस्कार करतो.
10A stone and a stone, an ephah and an ephah, Even both of them [are] an abomination to Jehovah.
11लहान मूल सुध्दा आपल्या कृतीने आपण चांगले आहोत की वाईट ते दाखवू शकते. त्या मुलाकडे लक्षपूर्वक पाहून तो प्रामाणिक आणि चांगला आहे की नाही ते तुम्ही समजू शकता.
11Even by his actions a youth maketh himself known, Whether his work be pure or upright.
12आपल्याला बघायला डोळे आणि ऐकायला कान आहेत आणि ते परमेश्वरानेच आपल्यासाठी केले आहेत.
12A hearing ear, and a seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
13जर तुम्हाला झोपायला आवडत असेल तर तुम्ही गरीब व्हाल. पण तुमच्या वेळेचा काम करुन उपयोग करा आणि तुम्हाला भरपूर खायला मिळेल.
13Love not sleep, lest thou become poor, Open thine eyes — be satisfied [with] bread.
14एखादा माणूस तुमच्याकडून काही विकत घेतो तेव्हा तो म्हणतो, “हे योग्य नाही, याची किंमत फार आहे.” नंतर तोच माणूस इतरांना जाऊन सांगतो की त्याने फार चांगला व्यवहार केला.
14`Bad, bad,` saith the buyer, And going his way then he boasteth himself.
15सोने आणि हिरे माणसाला श्रीमंत बनवतात. परंतु जर एखाद्याला तो काय बोलतो आहे हे कळत असेल तर त्याची किंमत खूपच जास्त असते.
15Substance, gold, and a multitude of rubies, Yea, a precious vessel, [are] lips of knowledge.
16तुम्ही जर दुसऱ्या माणसाच्या कर्जासाठी स्वत:ला जामीन ठेवलेत तर तुम्ही तुमचे कपडे सुध्दा घालवून बसाल.
16Take his garment when a stranger hath been surety, And for strangers pledge it.
17तुम्ही जर फसवून कुठली गोष्ट घेतलीत तर ती चांगली आहे असे तुम्हाला कदाचित् वाटेल. पण शेवटी ती कवडीमोलाचीच ठरेल.
17Sweet to a man [is] the bread of falsehood, And afterwards is his mouth filled [with] gravel.
18योजना आखण्या आधी चांगला सल्ला घ्या. तुम्हाला जर युध्द सुरु करायचे असेल तर मार्गदर्शनासाठी चांगल्या लोकांना शोधा.
18Purposes by counsel thou dost establish, And with plans make thou war.
19जो माणूस इतरांबद्दल काही गोष्टी सांगतो, त्यांच्यावर विश्वास ठेवणे शक्य नसते. म्हणून जो खूप बोलतो त्याच्याशी मैत्री करु नका.
19A revealer of secret counsels is the busybody, And for a deceiver [with] his lips make not thyself surety.
20जर एखादा माणूस त्याच्या आईविरुध्द किंवा वडिलांविरुध्द बोलला तर तो अंधार होणारा प्रकाश आहे.
20Whoso is vilifying his father and his mother, Extinguished is his lamp in blackness of darkness.
21जर तुम्हाला सहज संपत्ती मिळाली असेल तर तिची तुम्हाला किंमत नसते.
21An inheritance gotten wrongly at first, Even its latter end is not blessed.
22जर कुणी तुमच्याविरुद्व काही केले तर त्याला शिक्षा करायचा तुम्हीच प्रयत्न करु नका. परमेश्वरासाठी थांबा. शेवटी तोच तुम्हाला विजयी बनवेल.
22Do not say, `I recompense evil,` Wait for Jehovah, and He delivereth thee.
23काही लोक फसवी वजने आणि मापे वापरतात. ते त्याचा उपयोग लोकांना फसवण्यासाठी करतात. ते परमेश्वराला आवडत नाही. त्यामुळे त्याला आनंद होत नाही.
23An abomination to Jehovah [are] a stone and a stone, And balances of deceit [are] not good.
24प्रत्येकाच्या बाबतीत जे काय घडते ते परमेश्वर ठरवतो. म्हणून आपल्या आयुष्यात काय घडणार आहे ते माणासाला कसे काय कळेल?
24From Jehovah [are] the steps of a man, And man — how understandeth he his way?
25देवाला काही वस्तू देण्याचे वचन देण्याआधी विचार करा. नंतर तुम्ही तसे वचन द्याला नको होते असे तुम्हाला वाटू शकेल.
25A snare to a man [is] he hath swallowed a holy thing, And after vows to make inquiry.
26दुष्ट लोक कोणते ते शहाणा राजाच ठरवील. आणि तो राजाच त्या लोकांना शिक्षा करील.
26A wise king is scattering the wicked, And turneth back on them the wheel.
27मनुष्याचा आत्मा परमेश्वराचा दीप होय. माणसाच्या मनात काय आहे ते परमेश्वराला कळू शकते.
27The breath of man [is] a lamp of Jehovah, Searching all the inner parts of the heart.
28राजा जरा प्रामाणिक आणि सत्यवचनी असला, तर तो त्याची सत्ता राखू शकतो. त्याचे खरे प्रेम त्याचे राज्य बलकट ठेवते.
28Kindness and truth keep a king, And he hath supported by kindness his throne.
29आपण तरुण माणसाचे त्याच्या शक्तीबद्दल कौतुक करतो. पण आपण वृध्दाला त्याच्या पांढऱ्या केसांमुळे मान देतो. त्यावरुन तो पूर्ण आयुष्य जगाला हे दिसते.
29The beauty of young men is their strength, And the honour of old men is grey hairs.
30आपल्याला शिक्षा झाली तर आपण चुका करणे थांबवू. दु:ख माणसाला बदलू शकते.
30The bandages of a wound thou removest with the evil, Also the plagues of the inner parts of the heart!
