1भविष्यात काय घडेल याबद्दलच्या फुशारक्या मारु नका. उद्या काय घडेल ते तुम्हाला माहीत नसते.
1Boast not thyself of to-morrow, For thou knowest not what a day bringeth forth.
2स्वत:चीच स्तुती कधीही करु नका. ती दुसऱ्यांना करु द्या.
2Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, A stranger, and not thine own lips.
3दगड खूप वजनदार असतो आणि वाळू वाहून न्यायला कठीण असते. पण मूर्खांनी आणलेली संकटे सहन करणे या दोन्ही पेक्षा कठीण असते.
3A stone [is] heavy, and the sand [is] heavy, And the anger of a fool Is heavier than they both.
4राग क्रूर आणि नीच असतो त्यामुळे सर्वनाश होतो. पण मत्सर त्याहीपेक्षा वाईट असतो.
4Fury [is] fierce, and anger [is] overflowing, And who standeth before jealousy?
5उघड टीका ही गुप्त प्रेमापेक्षा चांगली असते.
5Better [is] open reproof than hidden love.
6मित्र तुम्हाला कधीतरी दु:ख देईल पण त्याची तसे करायची इच्छा नसते. शत्रू वेगळा असतो. शत्रू जरी तुमच्याशी कधी दयाबुध्दीने वागला तरी त्याला तुम्हाला दु:ख द्यायचीच इच्छा असते.
6Faithful are the wounds of a lover, And abundant the kisses of an enemy.
7तुम्हाला जर भूक नसेल तर तुम्ही मधदेखील खाणार नाही. पण जर तुम्ही भुकेले असाल तर तुम्ही काहीही खाल. ते चवीला वाईट असले तरीही.
7A satiated soul treadeth down a honeycomb, And [to] a hungry soul every bitter thing [is] sweet.
8घरापासून दूर असलेला माणूस म्हणजे घरट्यापासून दूर असलेला पक्षी.
8As a bird wandering from her nest, So [is] a man wandering from his place.
9अत्तर आणि गोड वास असलेल्या वस्तू तुम्हाला आनंद देतात. पण संकटे तुमच्या मनाची शांती घालवतात.
9Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, And the sweetness of one`s friend — from counsel of the soul.
10तुमच्या आणि तुमच्या वडिलांच्या मित्रांना विसरु नका. आणि तुम्ही संकटात असाल तर मदतीसाठी दूरच्या तुमच्या भावाच्या घरी जाऊ नका. जवळच्या शेजाऱ्याला विचारणे हे दूरवरच्या तुमच्या भावाकडे जाण्यापेक्षा चांगले असते.
10Thine own friend, and the friend of thy father, forsake not, And the house of thy brother enter not In a day of thy calamity, Better [is] a near neighbour than a brother afar off.
11मुला शहाणा हो. त्यामुळे मला आनंद वाटेल. नंतर जो कुणी माझ्यावर टीका करेल त्याला मी उत्तर देऊ शकेन.
11Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart. And I return my reproacher a word.
12शहाण्या लोकांना संकटांचा सुगावा लागला आणि ते त्यांच्या मार्गांतून बाजूला होतात. पण मूर्ख सरळ संकटात जातात आणि त्यामुळे दु:खी होतात.
12The prudent hath seen the evil, he is hidden, The simple have passed on, they are punished.
13जर तुम्ही दुसऱ्याच्या कर्जाबद्दल स्वत: जामीन राहिलात तर तुम्हाला तुमचे कपडेदेखील गमवावे लागतील.
13Take his garment, when a stranger hath been surety, And for a strange woman pledge it.
14“सुप्रभात” च्या आरोळीने तुमच्या शेजाऱ्याला भल्या पहाटे उठवू नका. तो त्याला आशीर्वादाऐवजी शाप समजेल.
14Whoso is saluting his friend with a loud voice, In the morning rising early, A light thing it is reckoned to him.
15सतत वाद घालण्याची इच्छी धरणारी बायको पावसाळ्याच्या दिवसात सतत गळणाऱ्या दिवसात सतत गळणाऱ्या पाण्यासारखी असते.
15A continual dropping in a day of rain, And a woman of contentions are alike,
16त्या बाईला थांबवणे हे वाऱ्याला थांबवण्यासारखे आहे. हाताने तेल पकडण्यासारखे असते.
16Whoso is hiding her hath hidden the wind, And the ointment of his right hand calleth out.
17लोखंडाच्या सुरीला धार करण्यासाठी लोखंडाचेच तुकडे वापरतात. त्याचप्रमाणे लोक एकमेकांना धारदार बनविणे एकमेकापासूनच शिकतात.
17Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.
18जो माणूस अंजिराच्या झाडाची निगा राखतो तो त्याची फळे खाऊ शकतो. तसेच जो माणूस त्याच्या धन्याची काळजी घेतो त्याला बक्षीस मिळते. त्याचा मालक त्याची काळजी घेईल.
18The keeper of a fig-tree eateth its fruit, And the preserver of his master is honoured.
19माणसाने पाण्यात पाहिले तर त्याला स्वत:चा चेहरा दिसेल. त्याचप्रमाणे माणसाचे हृदय तो माणूस खरा कसा आहे ते दाखविते.
19As [in] water the face [is] to face, So the heart of man to man.
20मृतलोक आणि नाश ह्यांची कधीही तृप्ती होत नाही. त्याचप्रमाणे माणसाच्या डोळ्यांतील वासना कधी शमत नाही.
20Sheol and destruction are not satisfied, And the eyes of man are not satisfied.
21सोने आणि चांदी शुध्द करण्यासाठी लोक अग्नीचा वापर करतात. त्याच रीतीने माणसाची परीक्षा लोक त्याची स्तुती करतात त्यावरुन होते.
21A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And a man according to his praise.
22मूर्खाला दळून तुम्ही त्याचे पीठ केले तरी त्याचा मूर्खपणा तुम्ही घालवू शकणार नाही.
22If thou dost beat the foolish in a mortar, Among washed things — with a pestle, His folly turneth not aside from off him.
23तुमच्या मेंढ्यांची आणि पशुधनाची काळजी घ्या. त्यांची तुम्ही उत्तम प्रकारे निगा राखत आहात याची खात्री करा.
23Know well the face of thy flock, Set thy heart to the droves,
24संपत्ती कायम टिकत नाही. राष्ट्रेसुध्दा कायम राहात नसतात.
24For riches [are] not to the age, Nor a crown to generation and generation.
25गवत कापल्यानंतर पुन्हा नवीन उगवते. टेकडीवर उगवणारे गवत कापा.
25Revealed was the hay, and seen the tender grass, And gathered the herbs of mountains.
26तुमच्या मेंढ्यांवरची लोकर कापा आणि तुमचे कपडे करा. तुमच्या काही बकऱ्या विका आणि जमीन विकत घ्या.
26Lambs [are] for thy clothing, And the price of the field [are] he-goats,
27तुमच्यासाठी आणि तुमच्या कुटुंबासाठी शेळीचे बरेच दूध असेल. त्यामुळे तुमच्या सेवकमुली निरोगी राहतील.
27And a sufficiency of goats` milk [is] for thy bread, For bread to thy house, and life to thy damsels!
