1त्यादिवशी शौलचा मुलगा योनाथान आपल्या शस्त्रवाहक तरुण सेवकाला म्हणाला, “चल, आपण खिंडीपलीकडील पलिष्ट्यांच्या छावणीकडे जाऊ. आपल्या वडीलांना मात्र त्याने हे सांगितले नाही.”
1Now it fell on a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father.
2शौल तेव्हा गिबाच्या सीमेपाशी मिग्रोन येथील डाळिंबाच्या झाडाखाली बसला होता. जवळच धान्याचे खळे होते. शौल सोबत सहाशे माणसे होती.
2Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people who were with him were about six hundred men;
3त्यातील एकाचे नाव अहीया. शिलो येथे एली म्हणून परमेश्वराचा याजक होता. त्याच्या जागी आता हा होता. अहीयाने एफोद घातला होता. ईखाबोदचा भाऊ अहीदूब याचा हा मुलगा. ईखाबोद फिनहासचा आणि फिनहास एलीचा मुलगा. योनाथान निघून गेला हे लोकांना माहीत नव्हते.
3and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people didn’t know that Jonathan was gone.
4खिंडीच्या दोन्ही बाजूला मोठमोठे सुळके होते. योनाथानने त्यांच्या मधून पलिष्ट्यांच्या ठाण्यावर जायचे ठरवले. एका सुळक्याचे नाव बोसेस व दुसऱ्याचे सेने असे होते.
4Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
5एक सुळका उत्तरेला मिखमाशच्या दिशेने तर दुसरा दक्षिणेला गिबाकडे वळलेला होता.
5The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.
6योनाथान आपल्या शस्त्रवाहक सेवकाला म्हणाला, “चल त्या परकीयांच्या ठाण्यावर जाऊ. कदाचित परमेश्वर आपल्या हातून त्यांचा पराभव करील. सैन्य कमी की जास्त याचा परमेश्वराला काय फरक पडतो?”
6Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.”
7तेव्हा तो सेवक म्हणाला, “तुम्ही म्हणाल तसे करु. मी आपल्याबरोबरच आहे.”
7His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Turn and, behold, I am with you according to your heart.”
8योनाथान म्हणाला, “चल तर! ही खिंड ओलांडून त्यांच्या पहारेकऱ्यांपर्यंत जाऊ. त्यांना आपल्याला पाहू दे.
8Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.
9‘आहात तिथेच थांबा, आम्ही तेथे येतो’ असे ते म्हणाले तर आपण तिथेच थांबू. आपण पुढे जायचे नाही.
9If they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them.
10पण त्यांनी पुढे यायला सांगितले तर मात्र पुढे व्हायचे. तसे झाले तर ती देवाची खूण समजायची. याचा अर्थ असा की त्यांचा पराभव करण्याची परमेश्वराने आपणास मुभा दिली आहे.”
10But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up; for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.”
11हे दोघे, पलिष्टी सैनिकांच्या नजरेच्या टप्प्यात आले. ते सैनिक म्हणाले, “पाहा, ते बिळात लपून राहिलेले इब्री आता बाहेर पडत आहेत.”
11Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!”
12त्या छावणीतील पलिष्ट्यांनी या दोघांना “वर या म्हणजे चांगला धडा शिकवतो” असे धमकावले. योनाथान आपल्या सेवकाला म्हणाला, “चल माझ्या मागोमाग. परमेश्वर आता आपल्या हातून पलिष्ट्यांना नेस्तनाबूत करील.”
12The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me; for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

13Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him.

14That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.
15तेव्हा छावणीत, शेतात, किल्ल्यावर पसरलेल्या सर्व पलिष्ट्यांमध्ये घबराट पसरली. चांगल्या शूर सैनिकांनीही धास्ती घेतली. त्यांच्या पायाखालची भूमी कंपायमान झाली आणि पलिष्टी भयभीत झाले.
15There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling.
16इकडे बन्यामीनच्या भूमीतील गिबा येथे असलेल्या शौलच्या रक्षकांनी पलिष्ट्यांना सैरावैरा पळताना पाहिले.
16The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away, and scattered.
17शौल आपल्या रक्षकांना म्हणाला, “आपली माणसे मोजा. कोण छावणी सोडून गेले ते पाहू.” मोजणीतून योनाथान आणि त्याचा सेवक गेल्याचे लक्षात आले.
17Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.
18शौल अहीयाला म्हणाला, “परमेश्वराचा पवित्रकरारकोश आण” (त्यावेळी देवाचा हा पवित्र करारकोश इस्राएलांजवळ होता.)
18Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God was with the children of Israel at that time.
19अहीयाशी बोलत आसताना शौल परमेश्वर काही सल्ला देईल म्हणून वाट पाहात होता. इकडे पलिष्ट्यांच्या ठाण्यावरील गलबला व गोंधळ वाढत चालला. शौलचा धीर सुटत चालला. शेवटी तो याजक अहीया याला म्हणाला, “आता प्रार्थना पुरे. तु थांब.”
19It happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”
20शौलने सैन्य जमा केले आणि तो युद्धाला भिडला. पलिष्ट्यांची आता दाणादाण उडाली. इतकी की ते आपापसातच लढू लागले.
20Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle: and behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow: a very great confusion.
21पूर्वी पलिष्ट्यांचे सेवक असलेले काही इब्री सध्या पलिष्ट्यांच्या छावणीत होते. ते आता शौल आणि योनाथान यांना जाऊन मिळाले.
21Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines as before, and who went up with them into the camp, from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
22एफ्राईमच्या डोंगराळ प्रदेशात दडून राहिलेल्या इस्राएलांनी पलिष्ट्यांच्या पलायनाची बातमी ऐकली. तेव्हा तेही युद्धात उतरले आणि त्यांनी पलिष्ट्यांचा पाठलाग सुरु केला.
22Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
23अशाप्रकारे परमेश्वराने त्यादिवशी इस्राएलांचा बचाव केला. युद्ध बेथ-आवेन कडे सरकले. जवळ जवळ दहा हजाराचे सर्व सैन्य शौलच्या पाठीशी होते. एफ्राईमच्या डोंगराळ परदेशातील सर्व नगरांमध्ये युद्ध पसरले.
23So Yahweh saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.
24पण शौलच्या हातून त्या दिवशी मोठी चूक झाली. सर्व इस्राएल लोक दमले भागलेले आणि भुकेले होते. शौलने त्यांच्याकडून सक्तीने एक शपथ घेतली होती. “संध्याकाळ व्हायच्या आत आणि शत्रूचा पाडाव करण्यापूर्वी कोणी काही खाल्ले तर त्याला शासन होईल.” अशा त्या शपथेमुळे कोणीही अन्नग्रहण केले नव्हते.
24The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

25All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.

26When the people had come to the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.
27आपल्या वडीलांनी सर्वाना बळजबरीने अशी शपथ घ्यायाला लावली आहे याबद्दल योनाथानला काहीच माहीत नव्हते. तेव्हा त्याने आपल्या हातातील काठी पोळ्यात खुपसली आणि मध काढला. थोडा मध खाल्यावर त्याला चांगली तरतरी आली.
27But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath: therefore he put forth the end of the rod who was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
28एक सैनिक योनाथानला म्हणाला, “तुमच्या वडीलांनी लोकांना शपथ घालून बजावले आहे की आज कोणी काही खाल्ले तर त्याला शाप लागेल. म्हणून लोकांनी काही खाल्लेले नाही. ते भुकेने व्याकुळ झाले आहेत.”
28Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food this day.’” The people were faint.
29योनाथान म्हणाला, “माझ्या वडीलांनी देशावर खूप संकटे आणली आहेत. थोडासा मध खाताच मला पाहा कसे ताजेतवाने वाटू लागले!
29Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
30लोकांनीही शत्रूच्या लूटीतून थोडे खाल्ले असते तर बरे झाले असते. आपण यापेक्षा जास्त पलिष्ट्यांना गारद करु शकलो असतो.”
30How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? For now has there been no great slaughter among the Philistines.”
31मिखामाशापासून अयालोन पर्यंत पलिष्ट्यांचा पाडाव करता करता इस्राएल लोक फार थकून गेले होते. ते भुकेलेही होते.
31They struck of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint;
32त्यांनी पलिष्ट्यांची मेंढरे गुरे, वासरे लुटून आणली होती. आता ते भुकेने इतके कासावीस झाले होते की त्यांनी ती गुरे तिथेच जमिनीवर मारुन खाल्ली. त्यांचे रक्तसुद्धा चाटले.
32and the people flew on the spoil, and took sheep, and cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.
33तेव्हा एक जण शौलला म्हणाला, “पाहा, हा परमेश्वराच्या दृष्टीने अपराध आहे. ही माणसे तर रक्तासकट मांस खात आहे.” शौल म्हणाला, “तुम्ही पाप केले आहे. आता एक मोठा दगड लोटून येथे आणा.”
33Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh, in that they eat meat with the blood.” He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me this day!”
34पुढे तो म्हणाला, “जा, त्या लोकांना जाऊन सांगा की प्रत्येकाने बैल मेंढरे माझ्यासमोर आणावी आणि मगच त्यांनी ती इथे कापावी. असे पाप करु नका. रक्ताने भरलेले मांस खाऊ नका.” मग सर्वानी आपापली जनावरे तेथे आणली आणि मारली.
34Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Bring me here every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.
35तेव्हा शौलने स्वत:हून परमेश्वरासाठी वेदी बांधली.
35Saul built an altar to Yahweh. This was the first altar that he built to Yahweh.
36तो म्हणाला, “आज रात्री आपण पलिष्ट्यांवर हल्ला करु. त्यांचे सर्व हिरावून घेऊन त्या सर्वाना कापून काढू.” सर्व सैन्याने त्याच्या म्हणण्याला साथ दिली. पण याजक म्हणाला, “आपण परमेश्वराचा कौल मागू.”
36Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near here to God.”
37म्हणून शौलने परमेश्वराला विचारले, “आम्ही आज पलिष्ट्यांवर चालून जाऊ का? तू आम्हाला त्यांचा पराभव करु देशील का?” पण त्यादिवशी परमेश्वराने शौलला उत्तर दिले नाही.
37Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day.
38तेव्हा शौल म्हणाला, सर्व अधिकाऱ्यांना, लोकनायकांना माझ्यासमोर बोलवा. आज कोणाच्या हातून पाप घडले आहे ते पाहू.
38Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people; and know and see in which this sin has been this day.
39इस्राएलला तारणाऱ्या परमेश्वराची शपथ घेऊन मी सांगतो की अगदी माझा पोटचा मुलगा योनाथान याच्याहातून अपराध घडला असेल तरी त्याला देहान्त शासन होईल.” यावर कोणीही चकार शब्द ही काढला नाही.
39For, as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.
40मग शौल सर्व इस्राएलांना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही सर्व एका बाजूला उभे राहा. मी आणि माझा मुलगा योनाथान दुसऱ्या बाजूला होतो.” सर्वानी ते मानले.
40Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”
41मग शौलाने प्रार्थना केली, “इस्राएलच्या परमेश्वरा, देवा, आज तू माझी प्रार्थना का ऐकली नाहीस? मी किंवा माझा मुलगा योनाथान याच्या हातून पाप घडले असेल तर उरीम टाक आणि लोकांच्या हातून पाप घडले असेल तर थुम्मीम टाक” शौल आणि योनाथानच्या नावाने दान पडले आणि लोक सुटले.
41Therefore Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Show the right.” Jonathan and Saul were chosen; but the people escaped.
42शौल म्हणाला, “पुन्हा त्या टाका व दाखवा की मी व माझा मुलगा योनाथान पैकी कोण दोषी आहे.” मग योनाथान पकडला गेला.
42Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected.
43शौल त्याला म्हणाला, “तू काय केलेस ते सांग.” योनाथान म्हणाला, “कोठीच्या टोकावर मावेल एवढाच मध तेवढा मी चाखला त्यासाठी मी प्राणार्पण करायला हवे का?”
43Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!” Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.”
44शौल म्हणाला, “माझा शब्द पाळला गेला नाही तर शासन करायला मी परमेश्वराला सांगितले आहे. तेव्हा तुला मेलेच पाहिजे.”
44Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”
45पण सर्व सैनिक शौलला म्हणाल, “योनाथानने आज इस्राएलकडे विजय खेचून आणला आहे. तेव्हा त्याने मेलेच पाहिजे का? खचितच नाही. आम्ही परमेश्वरापुढे शपथ घेऊन सांगतो की त्याच्या केसालाही धक्का लागणार नाही. पलिष्ट्यांविरुद्ध लढायला परमेश्वराने योनाथानला मदत केली आहे.” अशाप्रकारे लोकांनी योनाथानला वाचवले. त्याला मृत्यूची सजा झाली नाही.
45The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day!” So the people rescued Jonathan, that he didn’t die.
46शौलने पलिष्ट्यांचा पाठलाग केला नाही. पलिष्टी आपल्या जागी परतले.
46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.
47शौलने सर्व अधिकार आपल्या हाती घेऊन राज्य स्थापित केले. मवाबी, अम्मोनी, अदोमी, सोबाचे राज, पलिष्टी इत्यादी इस्राएलच्या भोवतालच्या सर्व शत्रूशी युद्ध केले. शौल जेथे जेथे गेला तेथे तेथे त्यांने शत्रूंचा पाडाव केला.
47Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.
48पराक्रम गाजवला. इस्राएलांची लूट करणाऱ्या सर्व शत्रूंपासून इस्राएलांची सुटका केली. अमालेकांचाही त्याने पराभव केला.
48He did valiantly, and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who despoiled them.
49योनाथान, इश्वी, आणि मलकीशुवा हे शौलचे मुलगे. शौलच्या मोठ्या मुलीचे नाव मेरब आणि धाकटीचे मीखल.
49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
50अहीनाम ही त्याची पत्नी. ती अहीमासची मुलगी. शौलचा काका नेर याचा मुलगा अबनेर त्याचा सेनापती होता.
50and the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.
51शौलचे वडील कीश आणि काका नेर. ही अबियेलची मुले.
51Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
52शौलने आयुष्यभर पराक्रम गाजवले. पलिष्ट्यांचा त्याने कडवा प्रतिकार केला. त्याला कुठेही शूर, पराक्रमी माणूस आढळला की त्याला तो सैनिकात भरती करुन घेई आणि अंगरक्षक म्हणून नेमी.
52There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him to him.
