²गुलामाप्रमाणे माणसालाही उन्हातान्हात काम केल्यानंतर थंडगार सावलीची गरज भासते. माणूस काम केल्यानंतर पगाराच्या दिवसाची वाट वघणान्या मजुराप्रमाणे आहे.

²As a servant who earnestly desires the shadow, as a hireling who looks for his wages,

³महिन्या मागून महिने निराशेत निघून गेले. माझ्या वाट्याला रात्रीमागून रात्र कष्टाचीच आली.

³so am I made to possess months of misery, wearisome nights are appointed to me.

⁴मी झोपी जाण्याच्या वेळी विचार करतो उठण्यासाठी किती वेळ आहे याचा आणि रात्र संपतच नाही. सूर्य उगवेपर्यंत मी या कुशीवरुन त्या कुशीवर तळमळत असतो.

⁴When I lie down, I say, ‘When shall I arise, and the night be gone?’ I toss and turn until the dawning of the day.

⁵माझे शरीर किड्यांनी आणि घार्णीनी भरलेले आहे. माझी कातडी सोलवटलेली आणि वाहत्या जखमांनी भरलेली आहे.

⁵My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust. My skin closes up, and breaks out afresh.

⁶“माझे दिवस विणकऱ्याच्या मागापेक्षा भरभर जातात आणि माझे आयुष्य आशेशिवाय संपते.

⁶My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.

⁷देवा, माझे आयुष्य म्हणजे केवळ श्र्वास आहे हे आठव. मी पुन्हा कधीही काही चांगले पाहणार नाही.

⁷Oh remember that my life is a breath. My eye shall no more see good.

⁸आणि तुम्ही मला पुन्हा कधीही पाहणार नाही. तुम्ही मला शोधाल तेव्हा मी गेलेला असेन.

⁸The eye of him who sees me shall see me no more. Your eyes shall be on me, but I shall not be.

⁹ढग दिसेनासा होतो आणि निघून जातो. त्याचप्रमाणे माणूस मरतो आणि थडग्यात पुरला जातो. तो पुन्हा कधीही परत येत नाही.

⁹As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. shall come up no more.

¹⁰He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹¹“तेव्हा मी गप्प बसणार नाही. मी बोलेन. माझ्या आत्म्याला क्लेश होत आहेत. माझा आत्मा अगदी कडू जहर झाला आहे म्हणून मी तक्रार करीन.

¹¹“Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹²देवा, तू माझ्यावर पाहारा का करीत आहेस? मी समुद्र आहे की त्यातला अक्राळ विक्राळ प्राणी?

¹²Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you put a guard over me?

¹³माझे अंथरुणच मला स्वस्थता देऊ शकेल. माझा बिछानाच मला विश्रांती आणि स्वास्थ्य देईल.

¹³When I say, ‘My bed shall comfort me. My couch shall ease my complaint;’

¹⁴पण देवा, मी जेव्हा स्वस्थ पडतो तेव्हा तू मला भयानक स्वप्नांनी घाबरवतोस. आणि तुझ्या दृष्टांतांनी मला भय वाटते.

¹⁴then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹⁵म्हणून जगण्यापेक्षा गुदमरुन मरणे मी पसंत करतो.

¹⁵so that my soul chooses strangling, death rather than my bones.

¹⁶मी माझ्या जीवनाचा तिरस्कार करतो. मी आशा सोडून दिली आहे. मला जगण्याची आसक्ती नाही. मला एकटा सोडून दे. माझ्या जीवनाला काही अर्थ नाही.

¹⁶I loathe my life. I don’t want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

¹⁷देवा, माणूस तुला इतका महत्वाचा वाटतो? तू त्याला इतका आदर का दाखवावास? तू त्याची दखल तरी का घेतोस?

¹⁷What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him,

¹⁸तू त्याला रोज सकाळी का भेटतोस? आणि क्षणाक्षणाला त्याची परीक्षा का घेतोस?

¹⁸that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment?

¹⁹देवा, तू एक क्षणभरही माझ्यावरची तुझी नजर वळवीत नाहीस. तू मला एक क्षणही एकटा सोडीत नाहीस.

¹⁹How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my spittle?

²⁰देवा, तू लोकांवर नजर ठेवतोस. मी पाप केले असले तरी मी आता काय करु शकतो? तू मला तुझे लक्ष्य का बनवत आहेस? मी तुझ्यासाठी एक समस्या बनलो आहे का?

²⁰If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself?

²¹तू मला माझ्या पापाबद्दल क्षमा का करुन टाकीत नाहीस? मी लवकरच मरेन आणि माझ्या थडग्यात जाईन. तू नंतर माझा शोध घेशील पण मी गेलेला असेन.”

²¹Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I shall not be.”
