¹अमित्तयाचा मुलगा योना ह्याच्याशी परमेश्वर बोलला. आणि म्हणाला,

¹Now the word of Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

²“निनवे मोठी नगरी आहे. तेथे लोक दुष्कृत्ये करीत असल्याचे मी ऐकले आहे. तेव्हा त्या नगरात जा लोकांना त्या वाईट गोष्टी करण्याचे थांबविण्यास सांग.”

²“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

³योनाला परमेश्वराची आज्ञा पाळायची नव्हती. म्हणून योनाने परमेश्वरापासून दूर पळून जाण्यची प्रयत्न केला. योना याफोला गेला. योनाला तार्शिस या खूप दूरच्या नगराला जाणारे गलबत सापडले. योनाने सफरीचे पैसे भरले व तो गलबतावर चढला. गलबतावरील लोकांबरोबर योनाला तार्शिसला जाण्याची इच्छा होती. त्याला परमेश्वरापासून दूर पळायचे होते.

³But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

⁴पण परमेश्वराने समुद्रात मोठे तुफान प्रचंड होते आणि गलबत फूटण्याच्या बेताला आले.

⁴But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

⁵गलबत बुडू नये म्हणून गलबतावरचे वजन कमी करावे असे गलबतावरील लोकांना वाटले. म्हणून त्यांनी गलबतावरील माल समुद्रात टाकण्यास सुरवात केली. खलाशी खूपच घाबरले होते. प्रत्येकजण आपापल्या दैवतांची प्रार्थना करु लागले. योना झोपण्यासाठी गलबताच्या खालच्या तळाच्या भागात गेला होता. तो तेथे झोपला होता.

⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

⁶कप्तानाने योनाला पाहिले तो त्याला म्हणाला, “उठ! झोपलास का? तुझ्या दैवताची प्रार्थना कर. कदाचित् तुझ्या प्रार्थनेने तुझे दैवत ऐकेल आणि आपल्याला वाचवेल.”

⁶So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God or, gods ! Maybe your God or, gods will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

⁷मग लोक एकमेकांना म्हणाले, “आपल्यावर हे संकट का आले हे आपण चिठ्या टाकून पाहावे.” म्हणून त्यांनी चिठ्या टाकल्या. त्यावरुन त्यांना कळले की योनामुळे हे संकट आले.

⁷They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

⁸मग ते योनाला म्हणाले, “तुझ्यामुळे ही भयंकर गोष्ट आमच्याबाबत घडत आहे. तेव्हा तू काय केले आहेस ते सांग. तू काय करतोस? तू कोठचा? तुझा देश कोणता? तुझी माणसे कोण आहेत?”

⁸Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

⁹योना त्या लोकांना म्हणाला, “मी इब्री (यहूदा) आहे. मी स्वर्गातील परमेश्वर देवाची उपासना करतो. समुद्र आणि भूमीचा निर्माता तोच परमेश्वर आहे.”

⁹He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

¹⁰तो परमेश्वरापासून दूर पळत आहे, हेही योनाने त्या लोकांना सांगितले. हे कळताच ते अतिशय घाबरले. त्यांनी योनाला विचारले, “परमेश्वराविरूध्द तू कोणती भंयकर गोष्ट केलीस?

¹⁰Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

¹¹वादळ जास्तच घोंघावू लागले व लाटाही जास्तच उसळू लगल्या. तेव्हा ते लोक योनाला म्हणाले, “स्वत:ला वाचविण्यासाठी आम्ही काय करावे? समुद्र शांत होण्यासाठी तुझे आम्ही काय करावे?

¹¹Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

¹²योना त्यांना म्हणाला, “समुद्रातील तुफानाला मी कारणीभूत आहे. तेव्हा मला समुद्रात फेका, म्हणजे समुद्र शांत होईल.”

¹²He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

¹³परंतु त्या माणसांना योनाला समुद्रात फेकावे असे वाटत नव्हते. त्यांनी गलबत पुन्हा किनाऱ्याकडे नेण्याचा प्रयत्न केला पण त्यांना ते शक्य झाले नाही. वारा प्रचंड होता समुद्रही खवळलेला होता. आणि वादळाची तीव्रता वाढतच होती.

¹³Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

¹⁴म्हणून लोकांनी परमेश्वराची करूणा भाकली, “परमेश्वरा, त्याने केलेल्या वाईट कृत्याबद्दल आम्ही या माणसाला समुद्रात फेकत आहोत.’ असे कृपया म्हणू नकोस. तू परमेश्वर आहेस आणि तुझ्या इच्छेप्रमाणे तू करशील, हे आम्हाला माहीत आहे. पण कृपा करुन आमच्यावर दया कर.”

¹⁴Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

¹⁵मग त्यांनी योनाला समुद्रात टाकले आणि तुफान थांबले. समुद्र शांत झाला.

¹⁵So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

¹⁶हे पाहताच ती माणसे परमेश्वराला घाबरु लागली व मान देऊ लागली. त्यांनी परमेश्वराला यज्ञ केला आणि नवस केले.

¹⁶Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.

¹⁷योना समुद्रात पडल्यावर, त्याला गिळण्यासाठी परमेश्वराने एक मोठा मासा निवडला. योना, तीन दिवस आणि तीन रात्र, माशाच्या पोटात होता.

¹⁷Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
