1परमेश्वराने नगरी वाचविली, ह्याचा योनाला आनंद झाला नाही तर उलट तो रागावला.
1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
2योनाने परमेश्वराकडे तक्रार केली. तो म्हणाला, “हे असे होणार हे मला माहीतच होते! मी माझ्या देशात होतो. तू मला येथे येण्यास सांगितलेस. त्याच वेळी मला कळले की या पापी नगरीच्या लोकांना तू क्षमा करणार. म्हणून मी तार्शिशला पळून जायचे ठरविले. तू दयाळू परमेशवर आहेस. हे मला ठाऊक होते. तू दया दाखवितोस आणि लोकांना शिक्षा करण्याची तुझी इच्छा नसते हे मला माहीतच होते. तू दयेचा सागर आहेस, हे मी जाणून होतो. मला माहीत होते की हे लोक पापांपासून परावृत्त झाल्यास, त्यांचा नाश करण्याचा बेत तू बदलशील.
2He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.
3म्हणून आता मी, परमेशवरा. तुला मला ठार मारण्याची विनंती करतो. माझ्या दृष्टीने जगण्यापेक्षा मरणे बरे!”
3Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.”
4मग परमेशवर म्हणाला, मी त्या लोकांचा नाश केला नाही म्हणून तू असे रागावणे योग्य आहे असे तुला वाटते का?”
4Yahweh said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
5पण ह्या सर्व गोष्टींबद्दल अजूनही योनाच्या मनात राग होता म्हणून तो नगरीबाहेर निघून गेला. नगरीजवळच्या, पूर्वाेकडील एका ठिकाणी योना गेला तेथे त्याने स्वत:साठी निवारा तयार केला. मग तेथे तो सावलीत नगरीचे काय होते ह्याची वाट पाहात बसला.
5Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.
6परमेशवराने, योनाच्या डोक्यावर, झटपट एक भोवळ्याचा वेल वाढविलास त्यामुळे योनाला बसायला थंड जागा झाली . त्याला आणखी आराम मिळायला मदत झाली ह्या वेलामुळे योनाला खूप आनंद झाला.
6Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.
7दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी वेलीचा काही भाग खाण्याकरिता परमेशवराने एक किडा पाठविला किड्याने वेल खायला सुरवात केली व वेल मेला.
7But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered.
8सूर्य डोक्यावर असताना, परमेशवराने गरम पूर्वेचा वारा निर्माण केला. त्याने मरणासाठी परमेशवराची विनवणी केली तो म्हणाला माझ्या मताने जगण्यापेक्षा मरणे बरे!”
8It happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
9[This verse may not be a part of this translation]
9God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?” He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.”
10मग परमेशवर म्हणाला, “तू त्या वेलासाठी काहीही केले नाहीस. तू त्याला वाढविले नाहीस. तो एका रात्रीत वाढला व दुसऱ्या दिवशी मेला आणि आता तुला त्या वेलाबद्दल वाईट वाटत आहे.
10Yahweh said, “You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.
11तू एका वेलासाठी अस्वस्थ होऊ शकतोस तर मग निनवेसारख्या मोठ्या नगरीसाठी मला वाईट वाटणे अगदी शक्य आहे त्या नगरीत 1,20,000 पेक्षा जास्त लोक व खूप प्राणी आहेत. त्या लोकांना आपण चुकीचे वागत आहेत ह्याची जाणीव नव्हती.”
11Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?”
