¹त्या काळी इस्राएल लोकांवर कोणी राजा नव्हता. एफ्राइमच्या डोंगराळ प्रदेशात अगदी आडबाजूला एक लेवी राहात असे. यहूदातील बेथलहेम नगरातील एक बाई त्याची दासी म्हणून त्याच्याजवळ राहात असे.

¹It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.

²एकदा त्या दोघांमध्ये काही तरी वादावादी झाली आणि ती त्याला सोडून बेथलहेमला आपल्या वडीलांकडे परत गेली. तिला जाऊन चार महिने झाले.

²His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.

³तेव्हा तिची समजूत घालून तिला परत आणावे या उद्देशाने तिचा नवरा तेथे जायला निघाला. एक नोकर आणि दोन गाढवे ही त्याने बरोबर घेतली होती. तिच्या वडीलांच्या घरी तो पोहोंचला त्याला आलेले पाहताच तिचे वडील आनंदाने त्याच्या स्वागताला पुढे आले.

³Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

⁴त्यांनी या लेवीला आपल्याकडे राहायचा आग्रह केला. तेव्हा त्यांच्या आदरातिथ्याचा स्वीकार करत तो तीन दिवस तेथे राहिला.

⁴His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.

⁵चैथ्या दिवशी सकाळी लौकर उठून त्याने निघायची तयारी सुरु केली. पण मुलीचे वडील त्याला म्हणाले, “काही तरी खाऊन घ्या आणि मगच निघा.”

⁵It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”

⁶सासरे जावयांनी एकत्र बसून न्याहारी केली. पुन्हा मुलीचे वडील म्हणाले, “आता आजच्या दिवस राहा, आराम करा. मग दुपारनंतर निघा.” मग दोघांची जेवणे झाली.

⁶So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”

⁷लेवी जायच्या तयारीत होता पण सासऱ्याच्या आग्रहामुळे पुन्हा त्याला एक रात्र मुक्काम वाढवावा लागला.

⁷The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

⁸पाचव्या दिवशी सकाळी लौकर उठून लेवी जायला निघाला. पण पुन्हा सासरा जावयाला म्हणाला, “न्याहारी करुन घ्या ताजेतवाने व्हा दुपारपर्यंत थांबा.” मग दोघांची जेवणे झाली.

⁸He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines”; and they both ate.

⁹लेवी, त्याची उपपत्नी आणि नोकर आता जायला निघाले. पण तिचे वडील म्हणाले, “आता तर अंधारुन आले आहे. दिवस मावळला. रात्री इथेच राहा आणि सकाळी लौकर उठून आपल्या मार्गाला लागा.”

⁹When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”

¹⁰पण लेवीच्या मनातून आता तिथे मुक्काम करायचा नव्हता. आपली गाढवे आणि उपपत्नी यांच्यासह तो निघाला. वाटचाल करत तो यबूस (म्हणजेच यरुशलेम) पर्यंत आला.

¹⁰But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.

¹¹यबूसरर्यंत ते आले तेव्हा दिवस मावळत आला होता. तेव्हा नोकर आपल्या मालकाला म्हणाला, “आज रात्रीचा मुक्काम आपण या यबूसी लोकांच्या नगरात करु.”

¹¹When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.”

¹²पण हा लेवी मालक त्याला म्हणाला, “हे शहर आपल्याला परके आहे. येथील लोक इस्राएल वंशाचे नाहीत. तेव्हा इथे राहायला नको. आपण गिबा येथे जाऊ.”

¹²His master said to him, “We won’t turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”

¹³तो पुढे म्हणाला, “चला तर, गिबा किंवा रामा यापौकी एखादे शहर गाठू त्यापौकी एका शहरात रात्र काढू.”

¹³He said to his servant, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”

¹⁴आणि ते सगळे पुढे निघाले. गिबात शिरताशिरताच सूर्यास्त होत होता. गिबा हा प्रदेश बन्यामीनच्या हद्दीत येत होता.

¹⁴So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

¹⁵तेथे मुक्काम करायच्या उद्देशाने ते त्या शहराच्या भर चौकात येऊन उभे राहिले. पण कोणीच त्यांना रात्रीपुरता आसरा द्यायला पुढे आले नाही.

¹⁵They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.

¹⁶एक म्हातारा माणूस तेव्हा शेतावरुन शहराकडे परतत होता. एफ्राइमच्या डोंगराळ भागात त्याचे घर होते. पण सध्या तो गिबा येथे राहात होता. (गिबा मधील लोक बन्यामीनच्या वंशातील होते.)

¹⁶Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

¹⁷या वाटसरुना पाहून त्याने विचारले, “तुम्ही कोण? कुठुन आलात? कोठे निघालात?”

¹⁷He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

¹⁸तेव्हा लेवीने उत्तर दिले, “मी यहूदा मधील बेथलहेमला गेलो होतो. आता मी परत माझ्या घराकडे चाललो आहे. पण आज रात्री कोणीही आम्हाला राहायला बोलावले नाही. एफ्राईमच्या डोंगराळ भागात अगदी एका टोकाला मी राहातो. यहूदा बेथलहेमला गेलो होतो. आता घरी निघालो आहे.

¹⁸He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.

¹⁹गाढवासाठी दाणावैरण, तसेच आम्हा तिघांपुरते खायचे प्यायचे जिन्रस आमच्या जवळ आहेत. तशी आम्हाला कशाची जरुरी नाही.”

¹⁹Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything.”

²⁰यावर तो म्हातारा माणूस म्हणाला, “माझ्या घरी तुम्ही खुशाल मुक्कामाला येऊ शकता. काही लागले सवरले तर मी तुम्हाला देईन. पण या चौकात मात्र रात्रीचे राहू नका.”

²⁰The old man said, “Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don’t lodge in the street.”

²¹आणि त्याने त्या सर्वांना आपल्या घरी नेले. गाढवांना वैरण दिले. या तिघांनी हातापाय धुतले आणि थोडेफार खाऊन घेतले.

²¹So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.

²²हे सगळे मजेत गप्पगोष्टी करत बसले आहेत तितक्यात गावातल्या काही वाह्यात गुंडांनी घराभोवती गर्दी केली. दार वाजवायला सुरुवात केली. म्हाताऱ्या घरमालकावर ते ओरडू लागले. “तुझ्याकडच्या पाहुण्याला बाहेर काढ. लैगिक मौजमजेसाठी तो आम्हाला हवा आहे.” असा एकच ओरडा त्यांनी चालवला.

²²As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!”

²³म्हाताऱ्याने बाहेर येऊन गुंडांना विनवले, “अरे बाबांनो असे भलते सलते करु नका. तो आज माझा पाहूणा आहे. असले दुष्ट पाप करु नका.

²³The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.

²⁴घरात माझी मुलगी आहे ती अजून कुमारी आहे. मी तिला व ह्या माणसाच्या उपपत्नीला बाहेर काढून तुमच्या स्वाधीन करतो. त्यांचे तुम्हाला काय हवे ते करा, परंतु या माणसाबरोबर असले भयंकर पाप करु नका.”

²⁴Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”

²⁵पण ती माणसे काही केल्या ऐकेनात. शेवटी लेवीने आपल्या उपपत्नीला बाहेर काढले आणि त्यांच्या हवाली केले. त्या गुंडांनी रात्रभर तिला छळले. तिच्यावर बलात्कार केला आणि पहाटे तिला तिथेे टाकून निघून गेले.

²⁵But the men wouldn’t listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go.

²⁶पहाटे ती कशीबशी त्या घरात आपल्या धन्याजवळ आली आणि पुढच्या दारशीच पडली उजाडेपर्यंत ती तशीच तिथे होती.

²⁶Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.

²⁷सकाळी लेवी जायच्या तयारीसाठी म्हणून लवकर उठला. बाहेर पडायला म्हणून त्याने दार उघडले तर बाहेर ती पडली होती. तिचा हात उंबरठ्यावर पडला होता. ती त्याच्या दारात पडलेली त्याची उपपत्नी होती.

²⁷Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

²⁸“चल ऊठ, आता जायचे आहे” असे तो तिला म्हणाला. पण ती कुठून उत्तर देणार? ती केव्हाच गतप्राण झाली होती. त्याने तिला गाढवावर लादले आणि तो घरी निघाला.

²⁸He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.

²⁹घरी पोहोंचल्यावर सुरीने त्याने तिचे बारा तुकडे केले इस्राएलच्या सर्व प्रदेशात त्याने ते पाठवून दिले.

²⁹When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

³⁰जो तो हे पाहून म्हणाला, “इस्राएलमध्ये कधीच असे घडले नव्हते. मिसर सोडल्यापासून आजतागायत असे झालेले कधीच आम्ही पाहिले नाही. तेव्हा यावर नीट विचार करुन, व चर्चा करुन. काय करायचे ते सांगा.”

³⁰It was so, that all who saw it said, “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
