¹मग येशू लोकांशी व त्याच्या शिष्यांशी बोलला, तो म्हणाला,

¹Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

²“नियमशास्त्राचे शिक्षक व परूशी यांना मोशेच्या नियमशास्त्राचे स्पष्टीकरण करण्याचे अधिकार आहेत.

²saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

³म्हणून ते जसे सांगतात तसे तुम्ही करा. पण ते जसे करतात तसे करू नका. मी असे म्हणतो याचे कारण ते बोलतात पण त्याप्रमाणे करत नाहीत.

³ All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

⁴वाहावयास अवघड असे ओझे ते बांधतात व ते ओझे लोकांच्या खांद्यांवर देतात व ते स्वत: ते ओझे उचलायला एक बोटदेखील लावत नाहीत.

⁴ For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

⁵ते त्यांचे सर्व चांगले काम लोकांनी पाहावे म्हणून करतात. ते पवित्र शास्त्र लिहिलेल्या लहान पेट्या मोठमोठ्या बनवितात आणि लोकांनी पाहावे म्हणून लांब झगे घालतात.

⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8. broad, enlarge the fringes or, tassels of their garments,

⁶मेजवानीच्या ठिकाणी आपल्याला विशेष मानाची जागा मिळावी असे त्यांना वाटते. तसेच यहूद्यांचे सभास्थानात मोक्याच्या जागी बसायला त्यांना फार आवडते.

⁶ and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

⁷बाजारातील मुख्य रस्त्याने जाता येता लोकांनी आपल्याला मान द्यावा याची त्यांना फार आवड असते आणि लोकांनी त्यांना गुरुजी म्हणावे असे त्यांना वाटते.

⁷ the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

⁸“परंतु तुम्ही स्वत:ला गुरूजी म्हणवून घेऊ नका. तुम्ही सर्व एकमेकांचे बहीण भाऊ आहात, तुमचा गुरू एकच आहे.

⁸ But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

⁹आणि जगातील कोणालाही पिता म्हणू नका. कारण तुमचा पिता एकच आहे व तो स्वर्गात आहे.

⁹ Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

¹⁰तुम्ही स्वत:ला ‘मालाक’ म्हणून घेऊ नका. तुमचा मालक ख्रिस्त आहे.

¹⁰ Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

¹¹तुमच्यातील जो सेवक बनून तुमची सेवा करतो तो तुमच्यात सर्वात मोठा होय.

¹¹ But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

¹²जो स्वत:ला मोठा समजेल त्याला कमी लेखले जाईल. स्वत:ला लहान समजणारा प्रत्येक जण मोठा गणला जाईल.

¹² Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹³अहो, परूश्यांनो आणि नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनो, हाय, हाय, तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! तुम्ही स्वर्गाच्या राज्याचा रस्ता लोकांसाठी खुला ठेवीत नाहीत. तुम्ही स्वत: तर आत जात नाहीच पण जे आत जाण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात त्यांनाही आत जाऊ देत नाहीत.

¹³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

¹⁴ “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.

¹⁵“परूश्यांनो व नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनी, तुम्ही दु:खी व्हाल. तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! तुम्ही समुद्र व जमिनीवरून प्रवास करून एक तरी शिष्य मिळतो का ते पाहाता आणि तुम्हांला तो मिळतो तेव्हा तुम्ही त्याला तुमच्याप्रमाणे नरकपुत्रासारखे करून टाकता.

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna or, Hell as yourselves.

¹⁶“तुम्हांला दु:ख होईल. आंधळ्या वाटाड्यांनो, जे तुम्ही म्हणता जर एखादा मंदिराच्या नावाने शपथ घेतो तर त्याने ती पाळलीच पाहिजे याचे बंधन त्याच्यावर नाही, पण जर एखादा मंदिरातील सोन्याची शपथ घेऊन बोलतो, तर त्याने ती शपथ पाळलीच पाहिजे.

¹⁶ “Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

¹⁷तुम्ही मूर्ख आंधळे आहात. सोने आणि मंदिर यांपैकी कोणते अधिक महत्त्वाचे? मंदिर त्या सोन्याला पवित्र बनविते.

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

¹⁸आणि तुम्ही असे म्हणता. जर एखादा वेदीची शपथ घेतो तर त्यात काही वावगे नाही. पण जर एखादा वेदीवरील अर्पणाची शपथ घेतो तर त्याने ती शपथ पाळलीच पहिजे.

¹⁸ ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

¹⁹तुम्ही आंधळे आहात. तुम्हांला काही दिसत नाही व कळत नाही! अर्पण मोठे की वेदी मोठी? वेदीमुळे अर्पण पवित्र होते म्हणून वेदी मोठी.

¹⁹ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

²⁰म्हणून जो वेदीची शपथ घेतो तो त्या वेदीबरोबर त्यावरच्या सर्वांची शपथ घेतो.

²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.

²¹तसेच जो मंदिराची शपथ घेतो तो मंदिर व त्यात राहणाऱ्या देवाची देखील शपथ घेतो.

²¹ He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living NU reads “lives” in it.

²²जो स्वर्गाची शपथ घेतो तो देवाच्या आसनाची व त्यावर बसणाऱ्याचीही शपथ घेतो.

²² He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

²³परूश्यांनो, नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनो, तुम्ही दु:खी व्हाल. तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! तुमचे जे काही आहे त्याचा दशांश तुम्ही देवाला देता- पुदिना, शेप, जिरे यांचा देखील दंशाश देता. पण नियमशास्त्राच्या महत्त्वाच्या गोष्टी म्हणजे- न्यायाने वागणे, दया दाखविणे व प्रामाणिकपणे वागणे हे तुम्ही पाळत नाही. या गोष्टी तुम्ही केल्या पाहिजेत व तसेच इतरही केल्या पाहिजेत.

²³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, cumin is an aromatic seed from Cuminum cyminum, resembling caraway in flavor and appearance. It is used as a spice. and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

²⁴तुम्ही आंधळे वाटाडे आहात. जो पाण्याने भरलेल्या प्याल्यातून माशी बाजूला करतो व उंटासह पाणी पिऊन टाकतो त्याच्यासारखे तुम्ही चष्टी तुमह् तु्ापण

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

²⁵निमअहो परूश्यांनो, नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनो, तुम्ही दु:खी व्हाल, तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! तुम्ही आपल्या ताटवाट्या बाहेरून घासता पुसता पण लोकांना फसवून कमावलेला फायदा आणि असंयम यानी त्या आतून भरल्या आहेत.

²⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness. TR reads “self-indulgence” instead of “unrighteousness”

²⁶अहो परुश्यांनो, तुम्ही आंधळे आहात! अगोदर तुमची वाटी आतून घासा व धुवा म्हणजे ती बाहेरून देखील खरोखर साफ होईल.

²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

²⁷अहो परुश्यांनो नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनो, तुम्ही दु:खी व्हाल. तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! रंगसफेदी केलेल्या कबरांसारखे तुम्ही आहात. त्या वरून चांगल्या दिसतात पण आतून मेलेल्या माणसांच्या हाडांनी भरल्या आहेत.

²⁷ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁸तुमचेही तसेच आहे. लोक तुमच्याकडे पाहतात आणि तुम्ही चांगले आहात असे त्यांना वाटते. पण तुम्ही आतून ढोंग व दुष्टपणा यांनी भरला आहात.

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²⁹अहो, परूश्यांनो, नियमशास्त्राच्या शिक्षकांनो, तुम्ही दु:खी व्हाल. तुम्ही ढोंगी आहात! तुम्ही संदेष्ट्यांसाठी कबरा बांधता. आणि जे लोक धार्मिक जीवन जगले त्यांची थडगी सजवता.

²⁹ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

³⁰आणि तुम्ही म्हणता जर आम्ही आमच्या वाडवडिलांच्या काळात जिवंत असतो तर त्यांना या संदेष्ट्यांना जिवे मारण्यास मदत केली नसती.

³⁰ and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

³¹पण ज्यांनी ज्यानी त्यांना जिवे मारले. त्यांचेच तुम्ही वंशज आहात याचा पुरावा तुम्ही देता.

³¹ Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.

³²पुढे व्हा आणि तुमच्या वाडवडिलांनी सुरू केलेली पापी कामे पूर्ण करा.

³² Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

³³तुम्ही साप आहात. विषारी सापाची पिल्ले आहात! तुम्ही देवाच्या हातून सुटू शकणार नाही. तुम्हा सर्वांना दोषी ठरविण्यात येईल. तुम्ही नरकात जाल.

³³ You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna or, Hell ?

³⁴मी तुम्हांला सांगतो की मी तुमच्याकडे संदेष्टे, ज्ञानी लोक आणि शिक्षक पाठवीत आहे. त्यांच्यातील काहींना तुम्ही जिवे माराल. त्यांपैकी काहींना वधस्तंभावर खिळाल. त्यांच्यातील काहींना तुमच्या सभास्थानात मारहाण कराल. त्यांचा नगरानगरातून पाठलाग कराल.

³⁴ Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

³⁵म्हणून ज्या चांगल्या लोकांचा वध या पृथ्वीवर झाला त्या सर्वांसाठी तुम्ही दोषी ठराल. हाबेल या चांगल्या मनुष्याच्या वधासाठी तुम्ही दोषी ठराल. आणि तुम्ही बरख्याचा पुत्र जखऱ्याला जिवे मारण्याविषयी दोषी ठराल. त्याला मंदिर आणि वेदी यांच्यामध्ये मारले होते. हाबेलाच्या काळापासून ते जखऱ्याच्या काळापर्यंत जे जे चांगले लोक मारण्यात आले, त्यांच्या वधाविषयी तुम्ही दोषी ठराल.

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

³⁶मी तुम्हांला खरे सांगतो; तुम्ही लोक जिवंत असेपर्यंत या गोष्टी घडतील.

³⁶ Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

³⁷अगे, यरूशलेमे, यरूशलेमे, तू संदेष्ट्यांना जिवे मारतेस. देवाने तुझ्याकडे पाठविलेल्या लोकांना दगडमार करतेस. कोंबडी जशी आपल्या पिल्लांना पंखाखाली एकवटते तसे तुझ्यातील लोकांना एकवटण्याचा पुष्कळ वेळा मी प्रयत्न केला पण तू मला तसे करू दिले नाहीस.

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

³⁸आता तुझे घर उजाड होईल मी तुला सांगतो, प्रभूच्या नावाने येणारा धन्यवादित असो.

³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

³⁹असे म्हणेपर्यत तू मला पाहणार नाहीस.”

³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Psalm 118:26
